The 2011 version is what a remaster should sound like. Minimal changes from the original but a slightly cleaner and more powerful sound. I still prefer the original 1986 version though but thats just my personal preference. Interestingly, Wake Up Dead actually sounds better with the 2004 remaster though.

There's been lots of remasters and reissues of the OG mix. Mix =/= mastering. EVERY release/reissue sounds different. Even across different regions. The Japanese original release for example sounds different to the original US release. The mix is the root of the sound, the mastering is its execution.

I like 2011 best, it saw a lot of heft added, had greater resolution. That being said, I was VERY surprised by how Wake Up Dead actually *benefited* from the 2004 treatment. Using stereo separation on the guitars relaxed and widened things a lot, despite the 2004 remixes for the most part being quite horrible... especially with those inserted snares.

I actually kind of like the 2004 remix. It does a nice job of compressing the song and making everything louder without overdoing the song and making it sound flat and emotionless. It definitely has a lot of issues, a lot of the character of the guitar and bass tones have been stripped out making the bass less crunchy and the guitar sound far more generic, but I could see myself playing the 2004 one at a party over the other two. For normal listening purposes, still gotta go with the og. The 2011 sounds just a tiny bit flatter to me, but I wouldn't be upset with it.

1986: Has a very spacious sound. The production on the original fills up the entire room. All the instruments have more depth and are sonically pleasing on this version. The guitars, the bass, and the drums are all present in the mix and don’t sound muffled at all. 2004 remix: Honestly, this is one of the better remixes out of all the 2004 remixes. The drums aren’t muffled, the guitars sound much cleaner, and the bass is louder. I also hear certain sections of double bass pedals that I couldn’t hear quite as well on the original. The problem is this version still suffers from compression and is too bass heavy which buries the guitars in the mix. Certain songs like Wake Up Dead, I Ain’t Superstitious, and Bad Omen sound pretty clean on here, but then you have some awful remixes on songs like The Conjuring and Peace Sells. 2011: The original mix remastered, but it is a downgrade from the original in my opinion. Sure, the guitars sound cleaner, but the bass has been turned down and the drums sound more muffled in this mix due to compression. This remaster was unnecessary. The original already had fantastic production and is their best sounding album from the ‘80s. Here’s how I rank each version #1: 1986 #2: 2004 #3: 2011 I know. It’s weird that I put the remix over the 2011 remaster. The main reason why is that I like some of the remixed songs on the 2004 version. The 2011 sounds squashed in comparison to the original, which is why I decided to put it in last place.

@@metal_helm The 2011 remaster for me just doesn’t have the same punch the original since this remaster is more compressed. I’m a sucker for hearing the depth and thickness of bass, which is why I prefer the sound of the bass in the original KIMB vs the Final Kill. This remaster is a bit too polished for me. The channel separation on the original sounds a bit better to me as well despite being a little quieter than the 2011 remaster. Honestly, the 2004 remix would be great if it wasn’t too compressed, had more mids, and turned the bass down just a little bit. It has a cleaner, modern sound compared to the original and 2011 remaster. In the original production, I know Dave used a B.C. Rich, but I think he used an ESP in the 2004 remix, so it does sound different to me tone wise compared to the B.C. Rich. I’m pretty sure he used an ESP in all of the 2004 remixes. He left Jackson and joined ESP for a very short time before signing with Dean around 2007.

@@metal_helm I’m not a bass player. I’m actually trying to practice guitar, but the bass guitar is one of the things that catches my attention the most just because I like how well it can contribute to the heaviness and how it blends together with the electric guitars. Random fact: There was one thing I learned about today is that they put up the original Rust in Peace album on Spotify. Someone has said that fans were so excited that Holy Wars already has 3 million streams. I’m hoping they upload the rest of the originals digitally. I think I figured out why the version of Peace Sells I listened to sounded weaker. I listened to it on Apple Music and I believe what they did was that they took the 2011 remaster, just made it quieter and listed it as the original version (which it's not, it comes with the alternate mixes). The thing that made me notice it might've been a different mix is the ending of wake up death. The original has Dave's vocals harmonized while the 2011 version doesn't.

for some reason 2004 sounds way worse than it actually is lol but still, 2011 is my choice. as a drummer, I have a hard time trying to tell what is what in the original record (even with my 8hz-40khz headset) because it sounds too muddy specially the bass drums and cymbals, dave clearly is overcompensating here with all these remasters, he's admited he spent the production money on cocaine and booze back then. 2011 gets the job done for me, it sounds crisp yet it keeps the staple 80s fat snares and such, compromised had to be made but he nailed it. loving your channel, dude. stay safe and have a great one!

You know the old saying 2020 vision? Or "hindsight is always 2020. But looking back it's still a bit fuzzy" Well guess what. The origin of 2020 has nothing to do with vision. In reality it's to describe the limits of human hearing... from 20 Hz to 20khz and even then it's not strictly accurate either because most people can't hear below 40hz or above 17khz so what good is anything up to 40khz. Even dogs can't hear anything above 26khz. My "sound advice" (get it? Sound advice) to anyone buying speakers or headphones is...don't get ripped off with gimmicks and pay silly money. Something expensive like a $400 beats headphones does not mean good quality sound. It means you got ripped off. Look at the box when you are buying the products and look at the frequency response. If it says 20hz-20khz frequency response then that's the thing you want....even if it's a $19.99 special from Walmart.

Honestly I think the 2004 sounds the "best", but it really isn't true to the original feel and mix which is definitely the one that suits the theme of the album the most IMO. Sadly the original still isn't on Spotify and I haven't found any places that sell it near me so I guess I'll just have to get it online. I still think the 2004 has the higher fidelity and a more whole feeling audio-scape than the original and 2011, it just has more presence and dynamic variety to it. Not saying that that's necessarily the best thing for the album, but I first listened to the 2004 (and have so since) so the 2011(/original) has always sounded quite weird to me. However I think if you're going to go for the "original" sound, you may as well just go for the literal original album instead of the 2011. It'd be good to be able to compare all 3 while they're on vinyl, though, because of the lower compression levels/higher fidelity. (TL;DR): 2004

I think a little less treble or maybe some clean up on the guitars so they don't sound so washed was all that was needed. I don't really like the 2011 one because there are a few points were they compressed it too hard and it distorts the tracks. The Conjuring is one example of this. Dang man, you got me! I'm torn... my first thoughts were 2011 was closest to the original (hardly changed really except some extra reverb on the snare I think), and was turned off by 2004 but then some of those riffs started getting into it and I wanted it to keep playing and see how the solo's and stuff would turn out. It is definitely thicker and warmer overall. It's like getting a historically bad sounding album remixed better, this is one that can use it... like the added bass remixes of And Justice for All or if Slayer Show No Mercy or Christ Illusion were replayed today with Repentless tone I would listen and like that...

great response, mainly because it reflect exactly what I was thinking (^_^). The difficult part about doing a video like this is the middle version, the remix is so different from the 1st and 3rd, it's hard to compare just the 1st and 3rd because they are not right next to each other. You are right though, the remix is a lot thicker and warmer, but at many points in the album, that snare practically disappears from the mix which is alarming.

@@metal_helm they are .M4A files, which contains AAC Audio, or ALAC audio as well. AAC isnt exactly lossless... But it is much less lossy than MP3, and can achieve better sound quality than MP3 320 at lower bitrates. Apple also uses ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec). Lossless Audio was added in June 2021. I believe you can choose which one you want to download if you purchase audio from them. So yes, that is an option Here is a link to some info en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Lossless_Audio_Codec There are some albums on there, like Death Magnetic, that are "MFiT" masters. They are indicated mainly by a later copyright date than the album's original release date, or some additional info (at the bottom of the page, under the play list) Rust in Peace is an example. There is a "remaster" of it on apple music. It isn't the 2004 version. It's the 2016 version. I was shocked to hear the original mix remastered in such a way. music.apple.com/us/album/rust-in-peace-remastered/1440848736 Death Magnetic as well Death Magnetic was released on Warner Bros records, but the Apple music version says "Blackened Records". It's a different mix, and it's a great mix. I hope this info helps you. There should be some great content for future videos, everyone loves a good comparison.

Remember people, like I'll say again. Sound Replacer on ProTools. Except in this case for all the 2004 Re-Recorded and Re-Mastered albums Dave Mustaine did after (plausibly) learning it off of Chris Vrenna (Nine Inch Nails). and with using ProTools since the 90s. He, Trent with Charlie all received the Beta of ProTools from Digidesign to try on the Macintosh. The irony of how it spawned at-home recording and don't forget too; Trent and Co. all would gather about to print the digital recordings to tape to be mixed and mastered. :D

This one for me is all over the place, crazy. The original mix for this album has its high’s and low’s but man Wake Up Dead and Good Mourning greatly benefit from the remix. It’s way more balanced, the reverb isn’t drenched on, and it actually breathes more than the original. But god does peace sells sound terrible, the snare is practically non existent in that song and the bass tone is all thin and hollow, and not fat like the original. Other than the Good Mourning / Black Friday and Wake Up Dead the ‘04 doesn’t really have much to offer. The 2011 I could really care less about, yes it is the original mix with clarity but I’d just get my hands on an original ‘86. I’d have to go with original for the most part.

Regarding the sound of 2004 I understand that many do not like it because it is completely different from the original, but in my opinion unlike Killing is my business 2004 with Peace Sells a great job was done!

@@giacomomeli8949 thanks for the intelligent reply. I did think about combining the 86 with the 2011 because of the similarities but then I would be injecting my own opinion into this and I am trying to be as objective as possible. If I did this, then I my thinking for future videos might end up like: "well these 2 versions sound similar so I should re-arrange the order so people can hear a better comparison" but eventually someone will disagree with what sounds similar, so I think it is better to keep a consistent template of order of release. But I totally agree with you for this video.

@@metal_helm all right, good question 😆, seriously, they don’t feel like remasters, they feel like instrument swaps. Everything is changed, remixed, snare sounds like cardboard. And all those add-ons, effects changed...the list is long. Just the other day, apple music played Vortex from the remasters, what the hell happened! CW is an example of another great sounding album turned to shit sound wise...etc

Original and 2004 are objectively better than 2011 version. 2011 remaster is audibly clipping and generally sounds really squashed; 2004 version is very loud too, but at least it doesn't clip, even though I understand why not everybody likes this remix. On HD650 with a solid headphone amp 2011 version becomes tiresome quickly.

objectively? that's a strong statement to make. But I like it, because I too have some strong feelings on some of these albums 👍
