Rick Harmon I don't think it's really the same. Your free lawyers are shit and biased (or so I am led to believe). Here you go get any lawyer (only ones who accept legal aid though) but they can be top of the line lawyers it's just the government pays them. When you get arrested if they ask you if you want to call your lawyer and if you dint have one they offer one, those type of ones are also biased and often shit but you can wait till you get released on bail or whatever and then go get a lawyer who the govement will then pay for.

Rick Harmon It sounds like your public defenders are our (UK) equivalent to a duty solicitor. They do a slap dash job and just represent you on the day. A mickey mouse job, not proper like legal aid where you your case is analysed a proper defence, witness statements, skeleton argument, hours, even weeks of prep before trial... the whole nine yards. Its a great thing but they are cutting down on legal aid and limiting the types of cases where you can claim it, some types of case legal aid is not available. Many cant get legal aid though, its really for the jobless or very low income.

In America if you don't cash you are fuct.

Student loan, I don't know if that applies to the U.S as well but in the UK, they only recoup the money when you're earning above 2 grand a month.
