So Megamind 2 will be releasing soon and... it's pretty rough. Megamind was such a great movie and I was one of the people asking for a sequel but now I think I'm good with just the first.
I've complied and edited Megamind being iconic moments into this video. Hope you enjoy!

Even if there's a chance it was good, they really shouldn't have bothered with a sequel, the risk just really isn't worth the reward. When the main arc of the main character is complete, stories become far harder to tell. The risk just really isn't worth the reward with a Megamind sequel. Kung Fu Panda 2 did well because they still had an avenue to explore from the first film, and 3 did well because that avenue was teased further in the second. That's why Button of Doom worked well as a short- there wasn't much to tell aside from his exploits afterwards.

@ProfessorHeavy1 To be fair, I do think that there is a posibility to explore stories and extend the character arc in a way that feels natural. I think dreamworks already achieved this before with shrek 2. Like, the story up to shrek 1 was done. The villain was ded, shrek married fiona, he was a hero to the fairy tale people and they lived happily ever after. Except wait, time to meet the father and mother in law who where expecting prince charming and got the ogre. actually, the whole world was expecting prince charming, and that presured him to almost forego Fiona. I think that they could explore some other aspects about him becoming a hero, and being a hero of a city without a villain. Its a perfect standalone movie, but I believe it could be more, like shrek and kung fu panda was with the right story.

@@federicocaputo9966The sad part is that they actually DID try the "dive into the protagonist's past" trope. With both of his parents apparently killed when his planet was destroyed and Metro Man basically finishing his story there isn't much to look at into the past. Instead they basically retconned in the existence of this unknown Doom Syndicate and a villain who taught Megamind "everything he knows". They basically brought up his past in the most retconned, cliched way possible. The original wasn't super deep but it was pretty profound for its story, and continuing Megamind's adventures into heroism would have been pretty difficult to pull off. The original was some "lightning in a bottle" stuff, and it's honestly not surprising that the original writers couldn't recreate it. I think the film functions better as a standalone- I wish I was proven wrong by the sequel but I honestly expected not to be.

Honestly if they did the doom syndicate as if the doom syndicate was a villain group that avoided metrocity because of metroman but then decided to try out taking on Megamind because they thought it would be easier. a 100% better story than the attempt to explore a backstory that didn't exist, this way there is no weird conflict with the past and we get to explore Megamind being a hero more and expand upon his future exploites
