The Central Artery/Tunnel Project (CA/T), known unofficially as the Big Dig, was a megaproject in Boston that rerouted the Central Artery (Interstate 93), the chief highway through the heart of the city, into a 3.5-mile (5.6-km) tunnel. The project also included the construction of the Ted Williams Tunnel (extending Interstate 90 to Logan International Airport), the Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge over the Charles River, and the Rose Kennedy Greenway in the space vacated by the previous I-93 elevated roadway.

Does anyone remember about a huge cast ring that was to be placed during the dig that was supported by cranes and they had a hard time keeping it from turning as it was suspended ? I remember reading they had tugboats in the harbor tied to it to prevent it from turning.

From my driving perspective, this was a success save for the Charles River crossing - the Leaverit Connector especially is a fail. But still, what an improvement. From a business perspective, the big dig distributed the work throughout the country and instantly ended a recession. (Memo to Washington - this is how to use infrastructure to economic advantage.)

I can't complain about your last statement. Infrastructure projects are job creators in any economic climate.

💯 a lot of local and hardworking blue collar construction workers made a good honest living working on the Big Dig and used that money to put their children through college!

"By 1980, the highway is jammed pack 14 hours each day". And in 2019, it's still true., even after the Big Dig was completed. Progress!

Well, it did make getting to Logan Airport easier, but that's about it. The whole thing was outdated long before it was finished. Not to mention all the corruption and illegal activities that occurred during the construction. We don't really talk much about it here in Boston!

The traffics better. The park is beautiful. The city isn’t as ugly anymore. Big Dig was a good idea and the city is a lot better off because of it. Corruption and Illegal activities have existed in every single location on earth since the dawn of time. Using that as a reason for why the Big Dig was a bad idea is pointless and stupid because the corruption and Illegal activities would have just happened somewhere else with something else.

With 14 billion dollars, Boston would have had the best public transport in the world with every citizen living less than 200m from a metro station. Building more highways underground is just burying the problem of induced demand.

The difference is until the past few years no one would’ve approved a transit redesign that reduces environmental impact
@dp2120
@dp2120 3 жыл бұрын
@@moew1051 Not sure what you mean. One of the motivations of the Big Dig was to reduce environmental impact. Moving the artery underground and creating the Ted Williams tunnel lowered carbon monoxide emissions and money was put up to expand public transport - it was actually a mandatory criteria to receive the money. The Big Dig may not have prioritized public transport over automobiles, but it's completely false that it wasn't designed to reduce environmental impact.

Funny thing about that Star Wars program! It was the best bargaining chip Reagan had against the soviets! They were absolutely terrified of it! They were going bankrupt, and this probably helped push them the rest of the way! it was more of a ruse than anything.
