The Auxiliary Nurse and Midwife (ANM) working at a Sub Centre in Shillong's Mawtawar locality made headlines after assisting a 25-year-old Ganga Subedi in delivering a healthy baby inside a cab.
Early morning on May 4, Subedi felt that she was going into labour and immediately left with her husband to rush to the Sub Centre at Mawtawar which was 7 kilometres away from Umjaknieh village. Subedi had to go through an arduous walk to reach a motorable road since this village is not accessible by cars.
It is not only at this centre that the ANMs are encouraging women in rural areas to opt for institutional child delivery but across Meghalaya. The Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) and Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) have been one of the biggest concerns for the health department. Many women to date avoid going to institutions to deliver either due to travel expenses or traditional beliefs. However, things are slowly starting to change after midwives have been counselling and educating the women about the free services they can avail.
