There's great feeling, elegance, and feminine beauty in her. She's a pleasure to watch, and this dance appears to show the roots of flamenco.

You have to really appreciate and understand Indian classical arts to really enjoy a performance of this length. I could watch this video all day. The nuances, details, and moments of pause in Kathak carry so much beauty, just as much as the spins and footwork. To be at the level where she is takes many years of training, which itself is admirable.

***** As an artist, I've always been attracted to Indian culture. For several years, I wore salwar kameez and reproductions of Mughal jewelry. And then there's the incredibly nuanced use of spices in Indian cooking. So, although I have no formal alliance, I am a lover of Indian aesthetics.

This piece is beautiful. Be it Bharatanatyam, Kathak or Ballet, if you don't know how to appreciate art, you will come out with comments such as "this is boring". By no means is it an indication of the performer's ability. It is an indication of a spreading virus in a society that would rather see some quick 5min bollywood shimmy and shake as opposed to a 10 minute classical item. Please don't insult Bharatanatyam by using it as an excuse for you not being able to understand this artform.

The art dance kathak is more than 2000 years old,the roma gypsies were great katak dancers at the king palaces during that era, after the mughuls invaded india ,the gypsies took their heritage to europe and central asia,and thats where flamenco dance started ,many of the turning and hand gesture are also found in flamenco,also note that flamenco are best perform by the gypsies.

Thank you for this very interesting piece of information! I'll never look at flamenco and kathak the same way again, it's amazing to think of their connections. Now that you've mentioned it, the two dances do share striking similarities!
@luismoreno61677 жыл бұрын
yes it is true, it is the origin of spanish flamenco. Im a spanish roma, we call ourshelves 'kale'. Flamenco come from us, we have always know it, the firts time I saw kathal I knew my ancestors were 'kathakas', please, tell me more about them, if you more. thanks.
@andrewgoering67386 жыл бұрын
ayomomamao it wasn't when the Mughals invaded..... most people equate the history of Islamic rule in India with that of the Mughals, but in actuality, the Mughals came quite a bit late in the history of Muslim Indian dynasties...... People often see all Indian Islamic culture, art and history as being from the Mughals, because the other Islamic dynasties that came before the Mughals are usually not touched upon very often, and furthermore, the Mughals Empire was the wealthiest and most prosperous of all Indian empires or kingdoms, and the Mughals represent the height of India's cultural and artistic and architectural achievement...... The Mughal Emperor Shah Jahaan was the ruler who had the Taj Mahal constructed, but we need to remember that despite the Mughals' being the most prominent and famous Islamic Indian dynasty, they arrived rather late on the scene of India-Islamic history...... Zahir ud-Din Muhammad Babur laid the foundation of the Mughal Empire in 1526, but Mughal rule was not solidified in the Indian subcontinent until the middle of Jalal ud-Din Muhammad Akbar's reign (1556-1605)...... so the mid-16th century....... that's the early-modern period...... Jamestown and the colony of Virginia were founded in North America by the English during the reign of Akbar's son Jahangir (r.1605-1627)....... however, Islamic rule in northern India and in Delhi began in 1206....... that's 320 before Babur laid the foundation for the Mughal Empire in 1526 after defeating the Sultan of Delhi, Ibrahim Lodi, at the First Battle of Panipat........ furthermore, from 1347 the Deccan in central and southern India was ruled by a large Islamic kingdom called the Bahmani Sultanate that was independent from the Sultanate of Delhi in the North....... in other words, Northern India and Central India was being conquered and ruled by Muslims since the early 1200s, and much of Southern India was conquered and ruled by an Islamic Sultanate by the mid-1300s........ that's the high Middle Ages........ this was hundreds of years before the Mughals....... There is so much Indo-Islamic history dating to centuries before the Mughals, yet everyone, especially Indians, have this misconception that the Mughals and Islamic rule in India are synonymous........ but that is far from reality.......

Classical Indian dance forms are forms of expression. Kathak is an art form which tells stories through expression. Is Flamenco a sort of dance which expresses message or story?

Photographers seem to have a problem in showing the whole dancer at times when their whole form conveys a beauty of coordinated movements. They choose, instead, to focus exclusively on the feet or face and arms, or alternate between them, etc, thereby killing the beauty in those sequences.

It is said that Kathak is one of the dances that inspired flamenco. Now I can see that this statement could really be true... There are so many similarities!
@marikavecchione30237 жыл бұрын
Well, I don't completely agree with you. From what I know, I'd rather say that western culture has taken a lot from asian art in general. For example there are so many Italian hit songs that are actually reworks of Chinese ancient songs. Flamenco, on the other side, due its existence also to spanish, african, gypsy and arabic influences. India has given a lot to westerns, but it's not the only one.

Flamenco has similar moves like kathak, but it has no relation to kathak. A large part of framework of flamenco dance is from indian rajasthani folk ( gypsy) dance.
