I think Catriona Ward handled any mention of mental health really well in The Last House on Needless Street, and the epilogue in particular explains why, so while I don't normally enjoy the useof mental health to explain certain things in horror books, in this case I think it was done well

I didn’t go into needless street reading it as a scary horror. It actually made me cry at the end. I thought the mental health was handled well, it wasn’t some cheap twist like in the wives (iykyk). I think Katie Colson set the right expectation for me for this book lol

Seeing people read Fredrik Backman makes me so unbelievably happy. I don't think Beartown is the kind of series to be like binged, i do recommend reading the next books too but like not back to back, with other books by him in between. I really recommend Anxious People (a book about people and also a hostage situation) and A man called Ove (it's about just like loneliness if i were to describe it in one word).

Beartown is my favourite books of all time, and I did finish the series! I would recommend continuing the series, I loved where the series went, and the second book make me sob so much (I didn't cry that much at Beartown).

I would definitely recommend continuing with the Beartown series. Other things he has written are very different to Beartown though, so you’re getting something significantly different in tone with his others. (I really didn’t like Anxious People at all, but Beartown is one of my favourite books) so just be aware of that if you pick up his other stuff 🥰

i felt the same way about the very secret society of irregular witches!! it was cozy but it was also too fluffy and didn't have enough meat to it. so much telling and not enough showing! i also gave it 3 stars.

My favorite book of the year has been Sea of Tranquility. I really want to read Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow as I think I will really love that one!

I was sooo curious the hear what you have to say about "Beartown". Just like you, I never thought you would read it 😂. I am so happy that you enjoyed it! It is one of my favourites (but it made me cry so I have that advantage ;). I wasn's sure it was going to be your thing because of your order of writing, plot, characters and this book is very much CHARACTER. But the writing is so superb! So many sentences that hit a punch, for example "Being a parent makes you feel like a blanket that’s always too small. No matter how hard you try to cover everyone, there’s always someone who’s freezing." Just 'chef's kiss'!

The second Beartown book is my favorite book ever. It left me breathless at the end. Stunning. My favorite author.

Fredrik Bachman is of my absolute favorite authors, and Beartown is my least favorite of his books. I would recommend reading “Anxious People” or “A Man Called Ove” instead of the sequel to “Beartown”. Both are exceptional!

Im totally with you on Irregular Witches so you’re not alone ! With Needless Street you would have to finish it to understand all of it because it’s way different from the “cheap thriller twists” but if you’re not enjoying it now, there’s no point to force yourself, DNFing is the way to go haha. Bear Town has been on my tbr for a little while and I've recently really have been feeling like trying to squeeze in it before the end of the year. This is definitely another push towards doing so

I would definitely say to continue Beartown! I haven’t read it yet sadly but it’s on my tbr for the month and I’m so excited to get to it. I have a group of friends who have read on in the series and all of them have told me it gets better after Beartown.

I think the irregular society book is one of those books where your mind set and setting really affect your rating, I read it after a massive reading slump and it was the perfect book to get me out of that because it was cute and quick and easy so I gave it 4.5⭐️ but if I’d read it when I’d just read an amazing book I think I would have given it 3 as well! Also please please read anxious people by fredrik backman 🧸

I felt the same about the society of witches book. I never connected to the characters and I felt like it was telling me not making me feel as well. Like it was fine but I won’t remember it after a month.

Definitely read the full Beartown trilogy. It’s the only trilogy I’ve ever read in which I’ve loved every book. You might even like the 2nd book more than the first! And also look forward to reading more by Fredrik Bachman. Start with A Man Called Ove❤

My favorite books were Babe by R.F. Kuang; Kaikeyi by Vaishnavi Patel; Loose in the Heel, Tight in the Toe by Valentine Wheeler; Self-Made Boys by Anna-Marie McLemore; and People Love Dead Jews: Reports from a Haunted Present by Dara Horn. I can't choose just one because they're all so different and I loved them for such different reasons!

The Quarry Girls is by far my favorite book of the year! I really don’t get into favoriting or rating books, but for me it was even 5 stars. I think you’d really like it for the mystery and what it says about being a woman/teen girl.

I think _Babel_ was my favourite book of the year, but _The Bone Orchard_ is a solid second. Books that pleasantly surprised me and also became new favs include: The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels, Lightfall (wholesome, funny graphic novel series), How to Kill a City, Mary, the Soulless series, Legends & Lattes, and the Spy x Family series. Most of these^ are seriously underrated. (And I especially think Veronica Speedwell fans would enjoy the Soulless series.)

Honestly shocked you didn't love Irregular Witches! There must be a glitch in the Matrix or something. I was one of the ones who named it in the poll, so I guess... I'm sorry? (I've since decided The Patron Saint of Second Chances is my favorite of the year, though I just started Remarkably Bright Creatures and think it might win.) But FREDRIK BACKMAN. He has one of the most beautiful writing styles I've ever read. Beartown was actually my least favorite of his (though still four stars!) and I haven't continued the series yet but will in the new year. If you want a book that'll make you cry, read A Man Called Ove. I bawled both times I've read it. Also, And Every Morning the Way Home Gets Longer and Longer. It's an hour-long audiobook and I cried for about a third of it. Fredrik Backman is just magical.

Favorite book I read is transcendent kingdom by Yaa Gyasi. I read it in January and immediately thought ‘it can’t go up from here’. So in a couple of weeks when I sit down to film my favorites of 2022 I’ll find out if it’s actually the #1 book or not.

Bear Town was my favorite of the year,( I also loved Small Things Like These and The Book of Cold Cases) I DNF'd The Last House the first time I attempted to read it. (It really creeped me out) But heard about it from so many book tubers that I gave it another try. I ended up liking it but you have to be OK with the CREEP factor.

Yes I so agree with you on The Very Secret Society of Witches. It was all telling, not showing. The character development was very weak, the prose was very cheesy. And it didn't scratch my "itch witch" at all! It was also a complete rip-off of the House of the Cerulean Sea plot. I gave it a 1. Also if you love Frederik Backman, you gotta read A Man Called Ove. It is such a touching book that will warm your heart and maybe make you cry.

🧸I don’t have a new favourite book of all time from this year. All of my five star reads feel more like 4.5 stars. I think The Roughest Draft is my favourite read of the year.

Unpopular opinion: l liked Us Against You more than Beartown. If you don't continue with that one, l would recommend A Man Called Ove or My Grandmother Sends Her Regards and Apologies by Fredrik Backman.

The world will hate me but I was a bit bored by tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow and a bit frustrated by the characters. Needless Street was interesting but there are plot holes and she doesn’t get things quite right with the POVs when you realise what’s happening in the story

My favourite book this year is Little Mushroom by Shishi, which is a about a mushroom that takes over a human body and tries to find his spore that was stolen from him by humans. Very underrated book!! Also all of MXTX’s books that came out this year- Chinese fantasies with the most unique plots I’ve ever read. Booktubers don’t talk about them ever… unless…? 👀

Needless Street was compelling... but I really hate mental illness being used for a horror/thriller twist. It just makes me feel dirty. So it's a book that I somewhat enjoyed sometimes? But can never ever recommend. And as far as I can tell, all of Catriona Ward's book do the exact same thing. So I've written her off as an author entirely at this point.

The last house on needless street is a thriller… not horror. Not really meant to be scary. That being said I disliked it for similar reasons you listed as things that would upset you. So I think dnfing was the right move. I also don’t agree with the majority saying catriona ward dealt with the topic well. I personally think it was a bit off putting even with her trying to be sensitive.

I DNF'D Babel. I DNF'D The Poppy War too. I just don't connect with her writing style or characters. So many footnotes?! Why?!@#?House in the Cerulean Sea is so delightful. I loved Under the Whispering Door too. Legends and Lattes is a gem and gives the cozy fantasy vibes. Hunt the Stars by Jesse Mihalik gives those same delightfully cozy vibes but in a sci-fi romance. 😍 Tomorrow x3 was giving me Ready Player One combined with Fault in our Stars vibes, and I don't like John Greene's writing or video games. I don't know if it's YA, but it was giving me a YA feeling from the premise and I'm Not a fan of YA so...I'll take a pass, thanks. Needless Street is definitely another pass for me. 😏 I'm a liberal DNF'ER. It's self-care. 🤣 Bachman is the "new Nicholas Sparks". I'm sure they have a manipulative tear 😢 jerker movie or series in the works (one I won't watch 😉). I did enjoy Ruby Fever by Ilona Andrews as well as Crowbones by Anne Bishop. Richard Osman's 3rd in his series was quite fun as was Anthony Horowitz's Moonflower Murders. 🐻

Needless Street made me so angry because of the mental health twist. I don’t care how someone handles it, which I disagree how “well” it was handled, mental health shouldn’t be a twist in a horror book, especially now. That might be me projecting, but I have to daily advocate for myself and my chronic mental illnesses that I don’t appreciate it being portrayed as a twist.
