Ustad Salamat Ali Khan said he couldn't get himself to sing Darbari for 6 months after listening to Mehdi Saheb for the first time. It was this ghazal. Even after 6 months, he said he would start darbari "magar Mehdi ke sur aise' yaad aate thae ke wahin rok de taa thaa. This is the same Salamat Ali Khan who would perform Darbari for the audience for 3 hours, come home and start darbari again. When he heard Khan Saheb Mehdi for the first time, he asked his son for a few hundred rupees ( a lot back then), got up, and went to the stage. Mehdi Saheb stopped the raag, Khan Saheb aap kiyun uth gae? Salamat Ali Saheb responded "Tum gaa sakte ho yeh to jaanta thaa magar aaj patta challa tum Gaviye ho." That's the biggest compliment anyone can receive from a classical singer. 1977 there was a huge show in London, all big names were there, Jagjit, Ghulam Ali, etc. When MH started his performance Salamat Ali quipped "Baaqi saare Kuze' (a small water container) se samandar tak pohanch ne ki koshish kar te' haen. Mehdi Samandar ko kuze' mein band kartaa hae.

Perhaps the only singer who received 21 Gun salute, equivalent to a head of state, by the King of Nepal.

Kaise kah doon ki mujhe chhod diya hai usne...Mehdi Sahab hum ko chhod kar kahin nahin gaye woh aaj bhi humare saath hai in Ghazalon mein...
