The Magnificat (Latin for "My soul magnifies the Lord") is a canticle, also known as the Song of Mary, the text of which is taken from the Gospel of Luke where it is spoken by Mary upon the occasion of her visit to her cousin Elizabeth. The chorale melody, exhibited in the pedals, comes from the Lutheran version of the Magnificat. This melody is then complemented by the cheerful call-and-response accompaniment in the hands, showcasing the Virgin's joyfulness when she found out she was to bear the Saviour of the Nations.
