what s the fancy fancy part?
@rhythmfield
@rhythmfield 4 жыл бұрын
hey0723 my interpretation is, you can “get fancy“ with this one, that’s where the creative part comes in. Watch/listen to the way he plays it in the video. With that left hand sweep and some tricky business in the right hand taps, you can get fancy…it takes time and practice

Aside from my grandfather, Mel Brown gave me my first drum lessons (1980, I think). I am a professional and employed musician. Thank you Mel. and thank you for exposing me to Philly Joe's Brush Artistry book !

This is brilliant staff, the forgotten art of brush drumming...everyone drummer today is crazy about bashing the drums with the sticks. Thanks

Great video. I downloaded a copy of this criminally rare book, and while it's great in itself, this video plugs the gaps. The patterns need to be both seen and heard to make complete sense, so I'm glad Mr Brown took the trouble to present Philly Joe's book on video.

Thanks for this - I’ve been having trouble making sense of Philly’s great book - some of the patterns make sense but others are a bit mysterious and unclear-nature of the beast. Mel really clarifies this great old brush moves, which were usually taught via oral tradition, by being passed along from one working jazz drummer to another (or a youngster) in night clubs and roadhouses and drum schools.

• Mr. Brown. Very nice demonstration videos! Perhaps you could post a video demonstrating brush embellishments; specifically, how to properly execute the sixteenth note/4 stroke ruff that many jazz drummers utilize on the ‘and’ of the 4th beat of the measure. How to artfully go in to it and how to come out of it so as to go back into the sweep/tap seemlessly. I've searched youtube up and down for years looking for someone to demonstrate this to no avail. You could be the first! Thank You.

When playing the conventional -stroke it seems like the left hand play the 1 and 3, and right hand play on the 2 and 2 a, and 4 a ? I can see only 4 beats in his right hand in the bar. Comments?

Philly Joe JONES, Philly Joe JONES. It’s disrespectful to misspell that great man’s name (I met him, he commanded respect) or really, anybody’s name. Please, please fix it now. Just click the three dots, go to Edit, change “Johnson” to “Jones”, right on your phone, now-It’s important. Thank you.
