Melanie Gibb confronts Chad and Lori Daybell in phone call

ST. ANTHONY - A phone confrontation between Melanie Gibb and former friends Chad and Lori Daybell was streamed around the world Monday during Chad Daybell’s preliminary hearing in Fremont County.
The call reportedly happened on Dec. 8, 2019, and centered around the location of Lori Daybell’s then-missing children Joshua “JJ” Vallow, 7, and Tylee Ryan, 16. In the recording, Gibb confronts the Daybells about why they asked her to lie to law enforcement.
Chad is charged with two felony counts of conspiracy to commit destruction, alteration or concealment of evidence, and two felony counts of destruction, alteration or concealment of evidence. He was arrested June 9 after the remains of JJ and Tylee were found buried on his property.
During police’s initial investigation into the whereabouts of the children, Lori told Rexburg police officers JJ was staying with Gibb.
Chad and Lori later asked Gibb to lie about the boy being with her.
Gibb was one of the witnesses to take the stand Monday, and during her testimony, Gibb told the court that she made the recording on her own, without the knowledge of law enforcement.
The topics on the call varied widely, beginning with why Gibb was asked to lie, and a discussion about the whereabouts of JJ. It then shifts to points of religious doctrine from their shared Latter-day Saint faith, before finally becoming full-blown accusations of wrongdoing.
At one point, Lori assures Gibb that JJ is safe.
“I know exactly where he is,” Lori says. “He’s perfectly fine and safe.”
Eventually, Gibb tells Lori she is very concerned about their behavior, before the phone call abruptly ends.

Lori is also charged with two felony counts of conspiracy to commit destruction, alteration or concealment of evidence. She is in jail in Madison County and is awaiting a preliminary hearing later this month.

She comes across as a more meek or weak person, but she wasn't afraid to hold lori accountable for the things she did. I like how she told Lori that they were not talking about her when Lori was trying to change the subject. I wish she had connected the dots before Charles was murdered, because I genuinely believe she was buying what Lori was selling until it was way too late to save anyone. It was the call from chad asking her to lie about JJ slapped her with reality. Supposedly her boyfriend also did his share of trying to reprogram her, the evidence is in the call because Lori clearly knows he is no longer a true believer. There is a report/rumor that Melani's boyfriend was at one of their meetings/gatherings and he stormed out saying they were apostates or something. I don't have a date on that supposed meeting but it had to have happened between the day JJ disappeared and this phone call.

I actually shuddered from my head to my toes when Lori said he(JJ) was safe and "Happy" and we all know that is not the case as he was dead and buried. My body would just not accept what my ears were hearing.

@@zoezzzarko1117 its a common phrase in the church, to testify is basically swearing on your faith. Certain times during Sunday service, members voluntarily stand before the congregration and "bear their testimony, that they know the church is true..." then they add personal reasons and revelations about what their faith has done for them or loved ones. Chad is probably referencing his faith testimony to back up the lie he's about to spew.

Bonnie Lee ~ Exactly! I’d also like to ask Chad’s kids if they ever feared for their lives. Has he ever called them “zombies”? I see Chad & Lori as very weak minded, self righteous, evil people who were so caught up in their gross fictitious romance that they went as far as to murder anyone who questioned their bizarre beliefs. Melany should count herself lucky that she came to her senses later in their game (with police on their tail) or she would have been one of their victims that died “mysteriously”. Sick!

@@babe1er, Typical narcissist behavior. Out of concern, Melanie is asking questions about J.J.'s wellbeing and Lori becomes automatically defensive. First indication of a narcissist is they immediately jumb the gun and become defensive, and angry about just general questions that may tint their character. It seems like Lori had already rehearsed and prepared herself for a possible interaction with Melanie. That is another thing that narcissists do is they premeditate and plan out their schemes beforehand to be prepared, just like she was a murder accomplish to Tyree and J.J.'s demise.

The other thing that bothers me is that Melanie is loving the attention even if it is over something so gruesome. I agree. I have followed this from the beginning. Blows my mind. I think Lori just wanted to run off and be free of any responsibility. I just don't get, Tylee was almost of legal age. She could have lived with her brother for a year. JJ obviously had family who would have gladly taken him. She could have gave them up and had her life, without killing them and others.

Wow. He just admitted that tammy went downhill slowly and had been "sick" for a long time. What do you want to bet he was drugging her so that she would die since she didn't die when he predicted she would. He had to speed up the process in order to marry Lori. I hope they are able to connect the dots and fry them both for all of those deaths. They are both sitting there having that conversation refusing to say where JJ was knowing he was dead and buried on Chads property. Its just disgusting.

"Anyone who knows is in danger" was Chad and Lori's way of saying anyone who knows of the murder of JJ will be killed off by Chad and Lori. They were literally telling Melanie. When this phone call was made was Alex still alive? If he was, then he had to be killed by them because Alex said to Melanie, " She did not want to know and that JJ could not be found. It was Alex's way of telling Melanie that JJ was dead.

Law enforcement and chaplains etc must have daily really touched basis with them and helped them stay strong, feel invaluable. I agree--their composure is so intense. Tylee wasn’t mentioned because at the point of the phone call, Tylee wasn’t known to be missing. JJ was only reported by his grandmother, Kay, who isn’t biologically related to Tylee. It was only through investigating JJ as missing they discovered Tylee was also missing.

Without focusing on the religious beliefs, Melanie showed some guts. She respected Chad and Lori and believed that they were on the same path. I have watched her in one interview grapple with complicated feelings , in an other seemed free of their influences and finally was a solid and focused witness. She is the best witness the prosecution has.

I know---the saving grace is that they were the ones that started reaching out re: "It's been too long since we have physically seen/heard the the two children". I accidentally came across this "situation" in online newspaper back around early December or so. I just wish that lying, deception in a wide range but very specific circumstances could be a felony crime. In this case they both could have possibly been arrested earlier and the same whole picture would have still been piece by piece factually "revealed". By the time the Lori Vall arrest for child endangerment came along,....I was in shreds in having followed the articles for months. What if the Woodcock grandparents did not exist--this situation would have been even worse, worse re: arresting and prosecuting. Also, if, if, if Tylee or JJ had been adults....and Tylee identifying and not wanting to be around her mother... Adult victims many times commit suicide when their abuser isn't even on police radar, too. Someone else calling police is exponentially huge beyond words. This set of grandparents --thank God they acted. Who knows where these two ""inmates" would be right now--if these two grandparents had not acted. I really wish there were specific felony laws for lying in a variety of situations.
