At my school we dont have detention, we have some kind of grade for our behaviour. If youve done something very bad it goes lower and it kinda just sticks with you. If you wanna go to i dunno some kind of police school you would have to have your grade 10 (maximum). Thanksfully its not easy to get your grade lower, but once it fell you cant get it back to a 10. I still have it a 10 though! SUCK IT MATTHEW!

This song is about mental health, I love how each song not only fits in with the theme but calls out schools bs. Edit: “so don’t treat me bad if I’m feeling sad” I feel like it represents someone getting mad at her because she isn’t responding due to her mental issues. “Baby can you hear me to night in detention?” It’s like she’s try to reach out from her depression. “The teachers don’t care about me. Fuck how I feel as long as I make money.” She feels no one cares about her as long as she can live. “Pretending everything’s alright is detention.” Pretending nothing is happening and you’re fine is torture and similar to detention or getting in trouble. The daily fight to keep home issues out of work and still have to put on a brave face everyday- "Please don't be mad if I don't smile back", "I'm physically exhausted, tired of my knuckles beating" Trying just to make it to the next payday to keep the power on, gas on, food in the fridge- "I'm chewing gum to pass this time.. sadness can't you see it" Having to keep it together in the midst of it all is SO MUCH.. I had a particularly bad week at work where I was humiliated in every possible way by the management team, and I dreaded every day for the following weeks. This song is about being accused for no reason. This is common for many schools, everyone gets accused for tons of shit they didn't even do! This happened to me once, it wasn't nice. Detention's not for people who are getting accused, it's for the crappy kids who done bad shit in school. *The teachers don't care about me*, means Melanie is saying that none of the teachers care about her and would put her in any trouble. *You're too busy seeking self-pleasures*, means that the person who accused Melanie is looking for pleasure for themselves by accusing Melanie for something she didn't do. In think it means like that she is in a cage, forced to entertain and take the harsh critisism and hate online. (Theyre throwing bugs at the cage, symbolizing the hate comments) but as soon as she stands uo for herself they get scared. (Idk if this is true, just an observation)

My interpretation of this is that she is talking about how schools and society in general maybe treat people with mental illness. If you act up, they don't care about why, just that you caused an inconvenience to them. A lot of kids that misbehave in my class don't have dads. One walked out, another's died when he was young, and another's is always away in military. the teachers ignore that it could be a factor and just get them in trouble. People tell us the teachers do this type of thing for love, but one of them just want their money and convenience. They don't care about a student's mental health. Just how they behave. They don't care how others kids treat you. Just convenience.
