Chinese first came in big numbers to Melbourne during the 1850s gold rush in the outlying countryside. Melbourne was the richest city in the world then and the money was put into the wonderful infrastructure of buildings, roads, gardens, facilities etc. There is a 'China Town ' in the city centre (this area is near it) and a Chinese Museum at Bendigo, one of the gold area cities. The Chinese are our second number or immigrants to Australia at present. It is called Marvellous Melbourne for many reasons !
