Well Max, as an ex melbournian of long standing, it does my heart good to see substantial investment in rail. When I was a young train guy it was all about closures, downgrading and sweating old assets. Sort of depressing really. Keep up the great work and as your quality increases with experience, please don’t lose your quirky sense of humour. It’s a great asset to your work.

Thanks for the kind words James. It is so exciting to see the expansion of the network the past couple of years, with many opportunities to go further coming up soon (Melton electrification, Airport etc.). I can't wait for the next 10 years, hopefully all that has been promised is executed 🤞 The humour will never go :)

Hey Max, the progress you have made with incorporating graphics into your story telling is obvious, as well as a lift in the sophistication and elegance of your descriptions. That statement on the Frankston line and having similar look stations made me think it'd be cool if the various stations around the city were themed in that kinda way by line with the multi-line stations trying to do it per-platform based on which trains go where. The idea being that it'd be a great visual way to easily tell which line you're on or which lines the platform you're waiting on that transcends language. And once again a great video Max, thank you for uploading!

Thanks train man a concise but informative look at the level crossing removals . I would add one of my favourites it’s the removal of the crossing on Rosanna rd and the Skyrail and new station that replaced it. It’s a beauty! As I live in Williamstown I have seen the Ferguson st North Willi station unfold in 2021 and I attended the opening on Dec 16th. It’s a very different t station tho the “small town” look of the old station. I will be glad when they finish the landscaping etc later in the year. I love the level crossing projects and will x continue to visit these during 2022. Well done again at a very slick video and hope for more to come!

@ 11:05 Hallam road. I grew up in the area. I am old enough at 55 to remember ALL that area you see was farm land and the station unmanned. In fact we would put caps on the train line and watch the train go over them. No traffic. Our school did rambling over the field sometimes.

In the early 1990s I used to ride my bike from Chelsea to Hallam then get the train back via Caulfield. Once I rode to the Lyndhurst goods platform where it felt very much like the countryside. It's a bit different now. In 1995 I got a bit of a surprise when I revisited Lyndhurst and saw a regular Comeng/Hitachi train passing through at the nearby crossing. At the time I wasn't aware they'd electrified the line.
@andyrob3259
@andyrob3259 2 жыл бұрын
@@zoomosis yes I remember the Lyndhurst station. Amongst some big old gum trees and there’s used to be some railway residences at one point. When they reopened the line and rebuilt the station it was a good km closer to Cranbourne.
@zoomosis
@zoomosis 2 жыл бұрын
@@andyrob3259 When I visited Lyndhurst station in the mid '90s I believe the single platform still existed but I don't think it was ever used by passenger trains even before the line was electrified. There were very few houses anywhere near it. Lynbrook station was built further south next to a housing estate but didn't open until 2012, 17 years after electrification. Edit: Wikipedia says Lyndhurst last served passengers in 1981.

Welcome back to content creation Max, we've missed you. Edit: being a Werribee man I sure am glad both the Werribee & Hoppers crossings are gone. It always puzzled me why Hoppers was never included in the original list despite it being a busy station & right near a freeway, but definately am glad it's done now. Am a bit sad we get no real station upgrades (although Hoppers is getting a footbridge) but to be honest other than the ramp being my one pet peeve, Werribee is so historic upgrading it would probably ruin it. Also, like how you used the RRL project completion video there. You really have to give that project credit for in many ways starting the infrastructure boom we see today, and giving the West a lot of benefits that last to this day. It's sad how it's been universally panned by most because the operation of the line unfortunately didn't turn out as it had been hoped, as it really did have a lot of benefits. Looking forward to a video from you on that in the future.
@thetrainman548
@thetrainman548 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks again Aidan :) It will certainly be tricky upgrading Werribee, I'll be interested to see how that goes, and Hoppers Crossing is not technically getting 'rebuilt' you're right. The Regional Rail Link certainly showed the Government that rail projects can be executed well in the 21st century, and I'm happy that the western section of the system has been shown a bit of overdue attention over the past decade. RRL video coming this year I'm sure!

A big project will be the Glenhuntly level crossing removal, where the Frankston line intersects with a tram line. LXRP's web site say the project is starting this year (2022) but won't be finished until 2024. It looks like they're trenching the station, which surprises me as I expected it to be more practical to build an elevated station. One huge positive on the Frankston line will be a continuous bike trail from Frankston to Edithvale alongside the railway line. Currently it stops just north of Carrum station, but is under construction.

I filmed a fair bit at Glenhuntly at the start of 2021, and those 2 crossings near each other need to go ASAP haha, its ridiculous how long the boom gates are down for. Even if the elevated rail was chosen (which would've looked awesome), the designs we can see now look incredible in my opinion being pretty unique. A bike trail sounds like it needs to be ridden by The Train Man haha, hopefully one day we see a rail trail the full length 😮, you never know! Thanks for watching :)

Interesting video and commentary, a huge project, some new roundabouts as well, makes me feel at home, I had no idea Melbourne had so many level crossings, I assume it’s because the railways developed and expanded long before the motor car arrived, people travelled by horse coach so crossing a railway line in then 19 century non urban Melbourne wasn’t an issue.

I'm excited to see the Union Rd crossing gone, and the new Union station. I lived nearby Surrey Hills station in 2016 when a train struck a car & killed the two people inside it, and I will never forget the sinking feeling I had in my stomach when I thought "huh, the boom gate bells have been going for an awfully long time" and realised what that meant. A friend of mine was at a cafe right next to the crossing when it happened and saw the entire event unfold, she still has nightmares about it. When the level crossing removal project started, and Union Rd was so far down the list of priority, I was absolutely appalled, so I'm glad to see it's been moved forward.

Wow Max the voice over is sounding great. Huge improvement. I stepped away from offering you any more help because I couldn't do any more with out giving you voice coaching. And it was clear you weren't up for this. Which is fair enough. Regardless of being able to take any credit or not for the massive improvement, it's nice to catch up with your videos again. It's a shame you're not posting any more but I was expecting this with the move away from Melbourne. There is still a layer of polish to put on the voicing and you are welcome to look me up if you want that.

Great story for the start of 2022. It's been a major success for Melbourne, and I find it interesting that everyone that was complaining about the skyrail options, saying that the space underneath would end up as wasteland has gone suprisingly quiet. For the first time, I went and took a look at some of the areas underneath the lines, and they are vibrant areas, obviously well-used by locals and (as you've noted) a prime example of what can happen with good design. On another note, are you planning to do a further update of what's happening with the Metro project? You've done your updates so well that I'll look forward to the next. And finally - all the best for your first year at Uni. I'm sure you'll crush it. :-)

davidf melbourne, the skyrail whingers were losers anyway. few people looked at their videos. and some of their viewers were skyrail lovers like me!.. we're about to get skyrailing here in perth right past my house. i'm having trouble waiting for it. 10 minutes stuck at a crossing yesterday. train passengers will be able to look into my yard if they could be bothered. bring it on!

Sorry. Give it time. Why do you think those areas will be any different from others? Some sort of magic? I’ve already seen Skyrail with graffiti on it at track level. Never mind at ground level. All it takes is cut backs to maintenance. Seen how clean the glass at Dandenong station is after 10 years of use to see what happens when the initial contract for cleaning is reduced and globes don’t get replaced as often.
@thetrainman548

Thanks very much David, I reckon that with only a little bit of maintenance, these areas have the potential to be great for many decades to come, I hope they look the same when I'm 30. Metro Tunnel video will be coming hopefully by the end of the month, I'm in the process of moving but I'll find time. Thanks again, really pumped for uni

@@andyrob3259 , when you get rid of level crossings you get rid of level crossing accidents. a woman in a nissan 370z was killed near my place about a month ago. i suspect she was trying to take a short cut because the council complicated the intersection near where it happened. my dad drove trains for 40 years and a lot of people died in front of his trains.

You need to do an episode on what was the Whittlesea Line, Now the Mernda line, formerly the South Morang Line, formerly the Epping line. Whittlesea was a rail line used to bring milk into Melbourne and rock quarries were also a big industry in the area using the railway. There are still plenty of abandoned track beds, poles, station platforms, station Master house and at what was the end of the line in Whittlesea was a turn table for steam trains. Today's Middle Gorge Station sits on the site of the original South Morang station. I have plenty of information on this line if you would like help to cover it's history for a future episode.

Another great vid, Max - your enthusiasm is even rubbing off on me! Are there any proposals for the Alamein line? The Riversdale Road level crossing is one of Melbourne's only two train/tram squares, I believe, and would seem an obvious one to replace.

Max, great job, but you missed one, Camms Road at Cranbourne. The crossing will be eliminated in 2024, possibly earlier (2023). Duplication completed next month (February) 12 months ahead of schedule. Camms Road closed a few days ago for the new track to be laid and a water main strengthened. It will reopen on 6 or 7 February, fully duplicated. Whoops just realised it was removals in 2021 - 2022. I jumped the gun there because I live near where the new Cranbourne East station will be built when the line is extended to Clyde.

I reckon no. If it’s anything like my office; while they will want us returned; now they have in place flexible working and everyone can log in from home with stable off site systems they are bringing in a requirement that they only want you in 3 days per week minimum and you can choose to work the other two at home. You can of course chose to go in all 5 if you wish. And it doesn’t matter which days M-F. Most are choosing to work from home Monday and Friday and going in Tuesday - Thursday so I think overall both rail and road traffic is going to stay at lower levels.

Great infrastructure BUT not before time. I emigrated to Melbourne from Sydney in 1987 and there was just a single, unused, level crossing at Clyde on Parramatta Rd. That was it within 50km of the Sydney CBD. I could not believe the traffic chaos at these weird level crossings. Will be good to see all those lives saved. Bit like the "unnecessary" pedestrian jump barriers on the Westgate.
