Occupying 12 square kilometres of the North African coast - 6 hours sailing time from mainland Europe - Melilla is without doubt Spain's most unique city. Sadly its only appearances in the news tend to portray a city on the front-line of migration from sub-Saharan Africa. Yet that is not an accurate picture of a proud community where the languages of Spain and North Africa mix peacefully in the cafes and bars.
The city boasts centuries of history as well as a concentration of Modernist architecture second only to Barcelona. This short guide will take you on a tour of Melilla La Vieja (the fortress where the city began), through the parks and elegant streets, and finally to the heavily fortified border.
The film features an incredible display of drumming from Batu Cañada.

I don't know when this clip was taken, but looking at google street view from august 2022, the view is terrifying. Dilapidated buildings, graffiti everywhere (a lot in Arabic), piles of garbage, closed shops, beggars and homeless people on every corner... A typical Muslim (Moroccan) city. The shots from December 2018 are completely different. Something has happened in that time interval.
