Melissa Aldana saxofonista chilena.

I hope it's not too pedantic to reiterate, again, the importance of women in jazz, specifically instrumentalists (not just vocalists). We know there's a long tradition, from Melba Liston to Geri Allen to Tia Fuller, but we need more. More horn players, more bass players, more more more. And we must continue to foster it. The good news is, from what I understand, there's a pipeline that should be producing and showcasing new/more female artists. I hope so...
@avalemert
@avalemert 9 жыл бұрын
I hope so, David... and also those of us who produce, compose and arrange original music. It's hard enough to show that we are not just the "girl in the group" or face, female musicians are a secret fountain of musical proliferation, sorely untapped. Let's change it! :-)

Some "experts" on SOTW profess that one must take a lot of mouthpiece into ones mouth to create a good tone. The great Pete Thomas and I disagree. The less mouthpiece the better. This accomplished saxophonist proves our point.
@IamSaralinka
@IamSaralinka 10 жыл бұрын
The amount of mouthpiece in your mouth depends on what sound you're trying to create. She is playing in sub-tone throughout the entire performance, which requires very little mouthpiece to create. Watch Stan Getz and Ben Webster live videos to see what I mean. However, in terms of sustaining good tone, it is recommended to use MORE mouthpiece for better control and, especially, volume. For this, watch some Sonny Stitt and Michael Brecker live performances for great examples. The downside to more/less mouthpiece is obviously sustaining pitch, but having a good ear will help with that. But anyway...

Melissa Aldana is 24 and won the Thelonious Monk sax competition in Sept 2013, just before this performance. So a showcase like this at Berklee for a high a profile student or alum like Melissa is not surprising. Just google her. (In fact, I am a little surprised that the Monk competition wasn't added to the description of the video by Berklee, given how easy it is to find all the GRAMMY, OSCAR and TONY award winners under "about us" on their home page.) Although the question of what does "winning at jazz" really mean is a separate conversation, Melissa is really good. What I think is just as remarkable as the great musicians that attend/attended Berklee, if not more so, are the resources that Berklee puts into showcasing high profile students/alums. And after spending a few days in Boston on my daughter's audition trip, I found that even the everyday recitals at Berklee were great shows with great production values. (In just a couple of days I saw singer-songwriters, a funk band, a metal band, bossa nova jazz singer with a Latin American rhythm section, college a cappella, and a fairly straight ahead jazz combo). Great sound quality and as you see here some great videos are the norm. I should add that Berklee is not for everybody, and if you go there "your results may vary" (and offline I could share some of the negatives I observed), but I think the audio and video quality of the work at Berklee, is one of things that Berklee does really, really well, and in my experience, consistently better than most other conservatories. I would add to that, there is an entrepreneurial vibe at Berklee (that I think is a prerequisite for success in the music business) that is often overlooked or only recently acknowledged and fostered by the other conservatories. Call it marketing. Berklee gets it. Berklee students, that survive the competitiveness there, get it. I would be interested to hear any other opinions about any of this.
