I am not sure of that. She should have, but I just looked it up and Nancy Marchand won for Lou Grant, and she was up against someone from Holocaust, Linda Kelsey from Lou Grant, and Kristy McNichol and Meredith Baxter from Family. (not sure why they would nominate 2 people from 2 shows in the same category.)

Had Melissa won the Emmy the cast would have hated her even more. Melissa Gilbert and Allison Arngrim would have demanded it. LOL!!!! When Mary woke up blind and Caroline sat there frozen was amazingly written and acted. Unfortunately, after that there wasn’t much for her to do.

Sada did deserve this award. She did a great job on the very underrated “Family” TV show. Loved all of these shows as a kid. I can appreciate these clips ❤️

On this night politics interrupted the show. That night the Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt were announced and with no cable news outlets all three networks covered the news. Since this was a live show they stopped and picked up where they left off when they returned to regular programming

Sada Thompson was an outstanding actress, primarily in the theater. She was amazing in “Family,” a show pretty much forgotten now but groundbreaking in its time, with incredible acting. She very much deserved to win. Melissa Sue Anderson did some good work on Little House, especially during the seasons when she went blind, but she wasn’t anything near the accomplished actress Sada Thompson was. Plus, the role of Mary was, for most of the series, a supporting role, not a lead. Which may have played into why she lost. If the Little House producers put her into lead actress contention, it was a miscalculation on their part.

I LOVE Sada Thompson, LOVE Kate Jackson...I am sure the other actresses were amazing. I feel, though, Nobody could beat Melissa Sue Anderson when she portrayed Mary Ingalls going blind. It was just the best of the best I've seen. Having said that, as I said, Sada Thompson is winner always!!

I guess in the current storyline where Mary went blind it sort of catapulted her to that category. Had Karen Grassle tried lead that year (she might have) I’m guessing she might have been in the lead category and Melissa would have gone to the supporting category. All in theory of course 40 years later. LOL!!!!

I remember when safa Thompson won the emmy. It was a WTF moment. Melissa Sue Anderson was amazing. There was nothing outstanding about sada's performance that year, while Mary went blind. This may be the year I started to believe that the Emmys weren't really all that big a deal.

Im quite surprised Melissa Sue Anderson got a lead actress nom for LHONP...She really was a supporting player to Melissa Gilbert's character I always thought......anyone else got a comment about this? +Pascoe Braun Michael Landon wanted her to be nominated for best supporting actress so she would have a higher chance of winning according to Melissa Sue. Also, according to her she said she chose to leave because here character had been played out enough and she was bored with it. Michael tried all he could with her character but after a while he and his crew were running out of ideas. This is all from the mouth of Melissa Sue. Hope that helped.

I don't care how great of an actress she is, Melissa Sue Anderson was a child and definitely deserved that award for being so young and so talented. That old lady had years to work on her craft. They just gave it to her because she was old. And does anybody remember her? Nope. But you can bet your bottom dollar that they remember The haunting episode of Mary going blind on Little House on the prairie.
