I hate to admit that we're nearing the end of the summer garden. Though I will miss the tomatoes, peppers and summer flowers, the cooler weather also brings back the cool-weather-loving crops as well.

I enjoyed your flower garden tour! My mom always said “grow the garden to feed the body & the flower garden to feed the soul”. I’ve tried to continue with that theme throughout my 30+ years of gardening.

Got our first frost (very light) 2 days ago (Sept 5) here in Alberta, Canada. Picked beans, harvested corn and onions that day. At least half of my beans survived, so we'll see what happens. Zucchini survived, with some leaf damage. Cucumber plants are almost dead, but the actual cucumbers survived. 🤷‍♀️

Amaranth is edible and you can use the seeds as part of a replacement for flour in any recipe. And it's full of vitamins. The leaves are a replacement for spinach.

You can use dock seeds as flour also

Thanks. I didn't know that they can be eaten. I've thought of growing them, but for their drooping quality in bouquets.

Relate to you so well; also in WA state, also focused on edible, medicinal and dye plants. Indigo has been a surprisingly easy and pretty plant for me this year. Light- and wash-fast dye on cellulose fiber with only salt and leaves is absolutely amazing!

I have such a short growing season, I let part of the pods mature to seed before I harvest for canning. That way they have time to mature before out first frost in September

Last summer we got five ducklings, made a very noticeable difference in the slug population around our garden come fall and spring. Slugs are one of my biggest pest pressures here in western Washington.

Need to look into the medicinal value of our native Oregon Grape. Roots and berries are very medicinal.

Nice medicinal garden. I started mine last year here in NY 5a. Currently have chamomile, echinacea, yarrow, hyssop, and chrysanthemums. I am still learning how to harvest and preserve things, so looking forward to see more of this content. Thank you!

I have not had any noticeable benefit from companion planting except flowers. I’ve learned that planting flowers draws and benefitial insects And has definitely helped my garden. I love alyssum. And mine tends to receive which makes me happy. Are used to poo poo marigolds, until they learned how good they are for your garden. Now they are a staple for me. I often use nasturtium as a trap crop, because aphids prefer it. And I love Nicotiana- flowering tobacco. In the morning and evening it smells almost like Jasmine. It’s amazing. Of course there’s always borage, the petals are edible and good for you! They don’t necessarily taste like anything. And calendula. I also always let some of my herbs flower- thyme, lemon balm, rosemary, mints etc-

I love Floret and did the same last year started growing Dahlias!! Watched videos on digging them up managed to save at least 60 roots but over watered when i grew this season they rotted!!! Learning lesson for me.

Cool. I'm starting potatoes to bring inside for the winter. That, and I keep herbs growing inside by windows and a hydroponic kit.

No need to start your breadseed poppies inside, Melissa. They're incredibly cold hardy! You could fall or winter sow them just fine in your zone. I direct sowed mine in late January/early February, here in Zone 8 (Portland, Ore.) And had a great harvest come May/June.

Hi, would you consider sharing some of your family bean seeds with other seed savers as an insurance policy in case something happens to your supply. You could always call on the others to see if they can send you some back in an emergency. This is common practice to prevent cherished varieties from going extinct. BTW, I have a couple/few of those AC'd gardener jeans as well - who knew they would be so fashionable - good future summer shorts potential as well. Enjoy your channel. Thanks for sharing. 😄

@@RestorationAcresTN Sorry, I was not implying that I wanted any seeds, I am an avid, gardener, seed saver and I give away extra seeds at local seed swaps and make friends. I was suggesting it more as an insurance policy/strategy to ensure a diversification of seed sources so that she is not at risk of being a single source and single point of failure for her precious variety. 😊

I love this!! With the zucchini, I plan on grading some of mine and putting it in the Freeze Dryer for muffins and breads later on in the year as well as slicing them in coins and seeing if I can get some zucchini chips😍 I love your medicinal garden it looks beautiful and will serve you and your family well. I asked my husband last year, “why are we mowing our yard?” So now we have portable fencing and I bring the cows up close to the house to do the mowing for us 😂 (Joel Salatin paddock system) however there is some pick up to do but that all goes to the compost to serve the Gardens later on or build up the soil in the yard.

Yes, the weather is weird and it has been over 100 degrees here in Manteca, Ca. for weeks on end. Yesterday was 115 ! Much luck for your family heirloom variety beans producing viable seeds.

Zucchini boats with the larger zucchinis. Scoop the seeds out, put in any meat sauce you like. I like meatballs and spaghetti sauce topped with spicy cheese.

I am Lucky and have summer fall sometime spring little to know winter FL .But you have to poor the water if no rain . I just replant cucumber in Aug . I never planted beans sound like a good idea . planted my zucchini and he Hugh .

Trying not to use any chemicals. My beans wete attacked this summer by something, idk what. All the leaves look like fine lace. Very little beans all summer. Any ideas? Im a senior/new gardner.

I'm curious, what is the black cloth that you have in your flower/medicinal herb garden? I've only ever seen black plastic which looks kinda like a trash bag. What you're using looks much heavier.

Thanks for sharing your herb garden. Lots of lovely, happy plants! - And was sent off on a rabbit trail of other useful flowers and found a surprise! Did you know tulips are edible? But only the flower and most of the bulb. (The germ needs thrown out. Don't eat that.) Need to do more research but had to share it with someone. Thanks! 🙃

Do you know where a person could get your bean seed . We had the tar hill bean , but lost the seed , like you ,it was one we had for years and years , and seems impossible to find the real tar hill bean seed .
