Wow Guy's This is cosmic. I have an '85 Rebel 250 I bought in 86 with life and it's changes it sat outside for 18 years. I reserected it a year ago . and it started making that gross Grinding noise you two posted. I took it apart thinking it was the starter clutch but saw a little gunk in the flywheel , so since I am in there I may as well replace the seal as well. Tanxs tons... saved me some grief down the road.

Hey I’m not sure if you still check the comment sections of these videos, but I wanted to say thank you very much for uploading this video and part 12. With your videos I was able to confidently replace my crankshaft seal after blowing it on the 3rd day of owning my rebel! Thanks!!!

+DukeDyson It is quite a lot of fun for us. Best part is Melly will know more about motorcycles since she's getting oily and greasy herself! LOL Hoping to get the Rebel back on the road so Melly can practice up. Cheers and thanks for watching! Mike

Thank you for the useful video! I put seal 35X52X10, bought for 50 cents in the nearest store. It is ideally suited to my Honda Rebel 250 1993. The magnet puller is a bolt 16mm, 50mm long, 1.5mm thread. I buy managed 2 bucks in the autoshop. Maybe it will help someone.

Thanks, I was hoping someone would give the dimensions for the main seal. I got the puller bolt size from another video (M16 fine thread) or M16X1.5 pitch 50mm long.

Your seal popped out because you either have the engine over filled with oil or your breather is clogged.

Great video. I've had 2 leaks and got very familiar with this repair job. I like that u used red thread locker on seal and the notched the aluminum. I will try that. I'm going to also replace starter gears and chain along with seals. Wish me luck. It sucks pushing your bike home.......

Pretty much the same as the old 125tcd I had years ago, it took me a good while longer with the bike in gear and my foot on the rear brake. One of the axles was the correct thread to so I used that to remove.
@RenchRanch
@RenchRanch 8 жыл бұрын
+Karl the Dingbat We didn't even had to hit the flywheel that hard. Just firm taps around the edge while putting 1/4" turn into the removal bolt. Melly and I thought for sure it was going to be a nightmare as many people with Honda Rebels have had issues getting the flywheel off. So hoping Del's advice on the spike peening method to prevent the oil seal from popping out again works out. Cheers! Mike

Great info in the vid. One suggestion though would be to get your wife to move more to the side in some parts, when shes not working on the bike. I like to see everything you do when you work on an engine. There were some points where bodies were in the way. Other than that big thumbs up.

+WEGGY zx12r Even though Barney has needed a lot of work, it's still way cheaper than buying a new Rebel. Honda wants $4500 (about £3084 GBP or so) for one new!!!! We paid all of $700 for Barney in running condition! (about £479 GBP!). With all the work, we still haven't spent 1/3 of the cost of a new Rebel. And Barney only had 8000 miles. I can highly recommend the Rebel for anyone starting. Doesn't matter the age of the bike. Honda's been making it since 1985 and little has changed for 2016 so there are a ton of spares. Another great thing is customizing the bike. It really makes it personal and keeps Melly interested in motorcycling. The best part is working with Melly. She enjoys learning not only how to ride a motorbike, but how all the mechanics work. I still haven't figured out if Melly's my sidekick or I am hers! LMAO! ;-) I am just glad that after being married for 18yrs we still get along, cut up, laugh, joke, and enjoy spending time in the garage turning a wrench. Best pals always! There are houses for sale in the neighbor hood bro.... LOL Come on over the pond, I'll cook up some grub on the grill and we can have a beer while BSing in the Garage! Cheers! Can't wait till September. Mike

ARGGGHHHH you dont hit the flywheel , wind bolt in until tight , then hit end of PULLER smartly if doesn't pop flywheel off tighten a little more quick sharp hit again , DO NOT hit flywheel DO NOT over tighten puller as you can damage crank , thats the right way to do it

Success. Motion Pro fly wheel puller bolt, lubed threads, and gentle use of a 7.5 amp impact wrench and my fly wheel came right off. Thanks. What was the initial cause of the seal failing? My 2008 CB250 has just done this as well. Thanks for the video. Ordering parts today.

mine leaks too. just got a really nice 2009 rebel. all’s well but for a minor oil leak. have not yet documented exactly where the leak is, but i’ m wondering if this is common for older rebels . . . might not be worth fixing.

do you have to drain the oil before you open the case
@RenchRanch
@RenchRanch Жыл бұрын
We did not, though once you remove the crank seal it will start to leak out a bit. The stator assembly is basically "dry" but some of the crank oil is actually designed to seep past and lubricate the 1-way bearings for the starter and the chain from the stator to the starter. You can even see a little weep hole at the bottom of the side cover. So the CMX250 will seep some oil over time, it will never be completely clean due to how Honda designed how the bits under the stator cover get oiled. BUT it shouldn't be dripping out in large quantities. I'd probably plan on at least an oil top off. Otherwise just change the oil when you fix the seal. Hope it goes well. Mike & Melly

@@RenchRanch ok i was asking because my rebel leaks oil from the top left gasket where my starteris located so i was wondering if this was the problem, but seeing that the starter and the chain will get oiled due to the design then perhaps ill just need a gasket. thank you for the reply

Hi Michael! Nice work you both did! My 86 LTD is suffering from the same issue...Can you tell me the part number of the two oil seals, I seem can´t find them at any part seller
@RenchRanch
@RenchRanch 8 жыл бұрын
You can order them from BikeBandit.com. The seals aren't listed under the crankshaft / engine parts, rather (unusually) they are listed under the charging section of the OEM parts. The little seal is part of the starter assembly as it's seals the end of the starter clutch. The other seal is part of the Stator even though it's actually the crankshaft seal. I can tell you that the Honda crankshaft seal tends to be problematic with quality. I ended up going to the local Auto Parts store and getting a Federal Mogul standard oil seal 35x52x7. You can get this from Amazon or the local Auto Parts store may have it. Chances are the little seal on the end of the starter clutch isn't leaking but it's a good idea to change it while your in there. That seal is a 22x31x5 in size. I cross referenced the Honda part numbers by year and both seals are unchanged so if you can't find a listing for a 1986, try a newer Rebel. Same parts. Hope this helps. Last tip, be careful driving the seal in as you can distort it and it will leak. If you don't have a seal driver, push it in as square as you can with your hands, then use a large socket extension to lightly tap it in a cross-star pattern. Good luck! Mike

BTW, spike peening the seal in 8 locations will prevent it from coming out on it's own again!

Can you post links to where you got the gaskets and seals at?
@RenchRanch
@RenchRanch 5 жыл бұрын
All the parts were bought online at BikeBandit.com. Since Honda has built the Rebel 250 forever it seems (and licensed to other companies now), it should be easy enough to find parts. However the first Honda OEM seal failed shortly after installation. IMHO there has to be some quality issues with the Honda part. Either they last forever or they fail miserably. The part number that Honda lists is also the oil seal size in this case. So I was able to order a replacement from the local autoparts store as they were able to look it up but the size. Zero issues with seal #2.
