Melanie holds a special place in my heart solely for the purpose that she's different from other pop artists. And I cannot stress the fact that I am a guy and any dudes that like Melanie Martinez should not hide it. VOID This is the first song I fully produced on my own, also in the portal room. The first thing I put down was that bass guitar top line. It was an exact melody from a voice memo I had recorded a few days prior. The chorus melody and lyric came all at once just from looping the bass line. I put down a simple programmed drum loop that was later replaced/mixed in with live drums by Rhys Hastings. I remember screaming that chorus while crying, it felt like a weight I needed to get off of me. The weight of my anxiety, the weight of my brain, and it perfectly fit the second stage. A void. A dark place where you are left alone with your own thoughts for introspection, in order to find the light within yourself.

void describes self-hatred and anxiety, she is empty, lonely, and unhappy. her mind is a void, which endlessly reminds her of her insecurities and problems. her mind wants to control and overtake her with these bad thoughts, which were placed into her mind by society's toxicity. by "escaping the void" she's changing and escaping her bad thoughts. before she can escape herself, she has to work through her problems/ insecurities. she may have insecurities and have a poor self-image, so she learns to see her insecurities as beautiful and transforms her darkness into positivity. positivity is an acquired mindset. if you see yourself as a beautiful and powerful being, that is what you will be. we are powerful and complex beings with the ability to be anything we put our mind to. your insecurities are beautiful inconveniences that make you unique.

I haven’t seen anyone mention this yet so I thought I’d point out that the ending of DEATH and the beginning of VOID match up seamlessly! There’s also the sound of a door opening at the end of DEATH and one of the lyrics in VOID mentions “looking for a doorway”, I’m starting to piece together what the narrative might be and I can’t wait for the album’s full release soon to figure it out :)

This song hits me so hard because I can relate to it, I have had suicidal thoughts and one of my ways of coping with is is to just lay down while listening to this song and let myself cry. And it makes me so sad that Melanie has gone through these things, and I’m so proud of her for expressing herself through her music, and she’s really helped me overcome things in my past. So what I just want to say is I love you Melanie.

I don't know why, but 'Like a priest behind confession walls I judge myself' is such a satisfying lyric to hear. It's not just addictive, it feels so unique and fresh to pop music and Melanie's music in particular. More mature, darker and more poetic. The lyric really gives you the feeling of pain that self-judgement causes. Church is often associated with public policy, so the priest can be a complex symbol. Like she's judging herself through society's expectations. Not every songwriter would add religious references to their lyrics. Melanie did it and did it beautifully💜

I knew this year was gonna be a good year for transformation. I’ve been spending the past few months exploring myself. Looking at myself from the outside in, and healing from a horrible situation while still in it. I was my only escape and best friend. Now I’m out of it, the same month this album is dropping:). You’ve helped me so much, I realized things about myself and life, that were only solidified by your music. You were my reminder that there’s an outside world, that there’s people like me, like you, that exist. And that the life I wanted was still possible. You’ve been helping me heal, and I’ve basically been listening to your music like it’s my religion. I can’t explain enough how SPOT ON your songs have been when trying to heal my life. And even this song, “why should I hate who I was”, that stuck with me so much. And it’s genuinely something I’ve been reminding myself of, but there’s always a small struggle. Listening to you everyday reminds me to keep up with my progress, your lyrics remind me why I’m healing and why it’s a great decision to stick to. Even with the line where society is injecting you with muck. I’m not lying when I say I discovered that about myself as well. Last year I took 🍄 and realized that it’s possible to be so much happier. That there’s nothing wrong with me for not feeling like I fit In. Bc I stand out. I understand things deeply, and I’m more empathetic than your average person. (There’s nothing wrong w anyone if they aren’t.) As a result I could feel the shell of muck crumbling from around my being. I realized that who I was was a result of others. They left me with emotional reminder of what they put me through, and I just let it build up like gum on a pole. Life is beautiful but so many people aren’t able to appreciate it, because we’re all so angry, sad or stressed. They can hardly see life past their hardships. It makes me cry knowing how happy it’s possible to be, because so many people haven’t felt that since they were children. And other people didn’t even get that much. You’ve inspired me to spread love, to stop being so negative, to realize that everyone has their own minds/lives. I spent so much time around negative people tht I became tht way. I thought it was cool to talk shit and corny to be empathetic. I cared what they thought I thought, my brain was no longer really mine. But I know now that that’s a bitter way of thinking, and I genuinely can’t imagine being that way again. If there’s a positive way to go about something, then do it. It won’t hurt anyone. Even if your efforts aren’t appreciated, you can still relax at the end of each day knowing that you tried your best to make a good impact. I was so scared of being judged that I became the most judgmental, but now I realize that judgmental people’s opinions don’t matter. They’re nothing more than opinions, and I know that I am not doing anything wrong.

When I say I'm AMAZED I mean it. I love everything about this song, the emotions expressed, all the feelings we can relate to at some point, it's so real, so deep and yet so enjoyable as a song, even my mum likes it and that's a big deal, she normally likes Hungarian folk music. Love Mel's new music, love her new look, I just love this woman so much

The song void by Melanie Martinez is a beautiful masterpiece. The way it sounds is unexplainably gorgeous. Melanie’s voice and songs feel and sound like heaven. Void is so insanely relatable it feels unreal. When Mel said “I hate who I was before” I felt that in an unexplainable way. Melanie’s songs are so beautiful and so is she, the beauty of her gorgeous voice is insane. I could listen to every single one of her songs in repeat everyday for the rest of my life and I’d be fine with that. Actually, I wouldn’t just be fine with that, I’d love it. The melodies and music in her songs always hit different, they make you feel better no matter if the song is sad or not. Mels love for music and her love and care for her fans make me feel so happy because she is an amazing and overall sweet person. All of her albums are nothing but perfect masterpieces, especially K-12. The film was amazing and so where the songs, as of expected by such an amazing music artist. I can't explain how proud I'm of her. I feel like we can all truly tell that she grew a lot as an artist. And this album has been everything that I've ever wanted from her. Melanie, I can’t tell you how much your music means to me. Cry Baby helped me deal with difficulties I was dealing with not just in my home life, but in my outside life as well and it helped me get through so many obstacles. K-12 helped me deal with the things that were happening at school and taught me what it means to be comfortable with myself. And I can tell that this album is definitely going to be different than your other albums, but it is a GOOD different. I love this song so much and I know a lot of others do as well.
