This is an exercise I came up with over a simple progression that will help you incorporate sweeping and tapping together. It is great for working on timing as it is a crucial part in the motif.
Lesson Includes Example, Slow demo with Tabs, and Backing Track for you to try over.

Brian Auer first I just wanted to say thank u because this is awesome and I have been using it to practice. I can now officially sweep thanks to u. I have a question, notes that u tap and pull off played at the same speed as the rest of the notes? Are the notes all triplets? I'm just slightly confused because they Way the sweeps fit with the beat it gives this really cool rotating feeling and I just want to make sure I'm playing it correctly. Hope I made sense.

Jacob Mitchem yes that did answer my question perfectly! Now it makes perfect sense and ur totally right, that rotation is exactly what made me want to play this and it just sticks with me. I can't play it as fast as u but I'm getting there. Now that you've explained it, I'll understand what I'm doing. I've been playing guitar for almost 20 years but I kind of stopped progressing for a good 7 years. Now that I'm listening to lots of metal, I have been inspired to get better and I can finally shred and play arpeggios and stuff. I don't know why I never tried before. Lol. Anyways thanks for answering my question and I look forward to more videos from u.

Big tip on sweeping. Your right hand moves a lot slower than your left hand. The timing is such that you wait on your left hand to catch your right hand. Meaning people try to get too fast with right hand because they are used to thinking one string and how fast syncopation can be with one string. Slow your right hand sweeping down until left hand catches up. The right hand sweeping isn’t what is fast, it’s the left hand that is fast. The sweep is a short movement, so it’s so easy to get ahead the left hand. Think about the fact that when you strum 1st position cords your are actually sweeping with the right hand way faster than you ever sweep picking arpeggios.

I simply can't imagine how anyone could possibly give this video a thumbs down. I've been playing guitar most of my life, and I'm a pretty accomplished player. The one thing that I struggle with the most is sweeps. Fabulous job man! But I have set my mind to doing nothing else but practicing sweeps. Thanks!

I like how you don't sweep up when going down through the arpeggio patterns at speed like Tony MacAlpine does, but you sweep up when playing the patterns slowly. Two different ways of practicing sweeps in one etude is a time-saver!

Religiously, 4 to 6 hrs a day for about 4 years before I could play like this. I did that for probably 15 years. Slowly tapered off as I needed 3 jobs and started having kids. Now I just play whenever (Although I still play almost every day). The only thing I really lose are calluses. Overall, it was all par for the course. Never felt like work, I loved every minute of it and still do.

also keep in mind the backing track is adding to what makes it sound clean. It wont make up the notes but the extra tone gives you that much more clarity if your in time!

+edgar alcantara Ideally, for good tapping you want to build calluses on your right/tapping hand's fingertips too. And you do that just like you did for your left hand: by playing a lot. With time your tapping will stand out more. Keep in mind also that the thicker string gauge you use, the harder it is to tap, so that can be part of the problem.

Thank you!!.. Just have to work on muting anything that is not being played.. That is the secret to being clean...not so much the notes you pick, but how you mute the ones you don't want to sound. Some people use a mute to muffle the strings like a hair tie, rubber band, cloth/sock, tape, etc.... I would stay clear of that because I think it could end up as a crutch..but a lot of people do it and they are a lot cleaner than I am because of it..lol ....which is really all that matters ;)

Specifically, how my right hand is supposed to keep the same single smooth horizontal movement at the same pace when my left hand has to hammer on multiple notes on some strings but not others. How do you do that?!

No joke, I spent 4 weeks practising this 2 -3 hours everyday sometimes longer and I am now able to play this at 0.75 speed. Thanks for this upload, I never thought I'd be able to sweep pick! Now to practise for the rest of my life. Haha.

This is an amazing exercise! I even tabbed it out in Guitar Pro 5 w/backing chords so I can play along at a MUCH slower tempo. It's going pretty good except I'm having a hard to transitioning to each new pattern so quickly and smoothly; my fingers tend to bunch up (bleeding the last 2 or 3 notes together) when finishing each phrase in anticipation to starting a new one. Was this ever a problem for you?

Yes, I think I ended up using hammer-ons to make the transitions sound smooth. And gradually my sub-conscience added the picked notes as it wanted to hear them... This is achieved of course by practicing for a very long time to where it feels completely natural. I stared by learning Jason Beckers Altitudes when I was very young.. That might help you too.. I think the Guitar pro file is on ultimate-guitar.com

When you do sweep picking do you use like a rag/sock down at around 1st fret to block out ringing? Cause when I sweep I have trouble getting that really good clarity :( Also what do you use for your tone?

it's not really a true em7 arpeggio b/c you're doing 1-3-5-7-3-5-7, thus not repeating the root E on the g string 9th fret

True? I wasn't aware that chords were now a belief system? :p To my knowledge, the chord formula for m7 is 1-3-5-7. Doesn't matter what order unless you are looking to name an inversion/voicing. I also "believe" you can stack the same notes as many times as you like without changing the chord name. But that's just how I understood the study.

I am not sure what definition you go by but to my knowledge, the definition of an arpeggio is when you play each note of a chord separately. Therefore this is an arpeggio played in "concordance" to what the theory explains🎯

Julien Prégent I believe what you are trying to say is that this "Arpeggio" does not follow proper tertian harmony. Which may be true but still your argument is a non sequitur for the following reasons: 1. I never said here is an Em7 Tertian Arpeggio 2. It is clearly still an arpeggio ;) I appreciate the feedback though.

This was a lot of help, especially the ending when I could listen closely and get the timing down, I was sweeping too fast at first, but this video really helped, now I sound impressive. Haha. Thanks.

It will be a very long time before I can play this.. But you're the first one on KZfaq to actually play something beautiful with sweep picking rather than insufferable metal shreds!
