Melting GLASS Bottles Into A Huge Glass Ingot AND Coins - Melting Glass At Home

In this video I'll be melting down old glass bottles and turning them into a giant glass ingot and custom coins. I tried a few different molds to melt the glass into. Graphite molds were tested first and they seemed to hold the best detail over the clay molds that were made next. The glass was broken down into tiny pieces and melted in the kiln. It would be interesting to know the heat temp. and time, and the cool down schedule to relive internal stress to prevent shattering...

Here’s an idea. Get a bunch of bottles of all different colors smash them together and melt them. If you get a good balance (say 3 clear bottles to 1 amber bottle) you may end up with nice amber swirls in the coins.

Now that was different, I'd love it if the coins had a small hole in them so you could hang them up and make a little wind chime or just hang them on the wall or something. Very creative, and a nice way to upcycle the bottles.

Hello. Great job. But here is a few ideas to have fun with glass melting. Use clear glass but when the glass gets to the melting poing. Sprinkle blue or red glass tinny pieces and watch them melt. Or use a darker glass for eyes mouth. Before you put the main body of glass into the coin molds

The glass melt was a real nice diversion from your norm & I really liked it. I'm curious: how many pours can you get out of a graphite coin mold before you start seeing a loss in detail? Am guessing the ingot molds last a lot longer since they have smooth sides.

@molsenice
@molsenice 4 жыл бұрын
annealing is the key with glass - a long slow cool down process to let the glass crystals align. otherwise weeks or months from now for no resewn glass will just pop. Used to stretch coke bottle with a kiln back in collage, could get them close to 2 feet long - was fun and everyone wanted them. till they started to shatter because we cooled them down to fast when we tried to speed up the process. It was our professor that figured it out.

Glass melts between 1400c - 1600c (2500f - 2900f). The electric kiln is nicely controlled. Glass needs care to control it how you wish. A well built wood fire can be around 1100c (2000f). Not hot enough to melt glass, but enough to make it "slump." That is to say, a bottle will flatten in the hottest part of a campfire, or crushed glass might "slump" into a form.

for the graphite molds you want to use lampworked glass and not kiln fused glass, i have some graphite molds that have lasted 1000+ uses with lampworked glass and dont lose their form or off gas. kiln firired glass is hard to get tight detail rather than pressed hot glass. you should give it a try if you already have the kiln and molds, you just need a proper glass torch
