@@mpdragon6295 I use Petrobond which I bought quite a few years ago. It didn't seem too expensive at the time. The foundry store had all kinds of other useful tools and things like degassing compounds.

Not any trouble for those of us who love to build and weld. It just give us something to do for when we want to do something else

I think we all would be very interested to see a video about how you get the fire started in your setup, maybe show what you are using for the blower and maybe draw up a sketch of what's going on where the oil/air mixes. Last time I melted aluminum I just dug a hole in the ground, and a tunnel to blow air in, started a wood fire and forced air with a leafblower. I just bought a 55 gallon steel barrel to use in a waste oil burner project for melting and casting things for fun, and am looking at different designs and yours seems like a good one.

All joking aside, it is seriously getting harder to find a person that writes well these days, even in their own native language!Maybe its the fact that this generation spends more time in social media and "texting" (which is full of spelling and grammatical errors) than actually reading books (which have to be reviewed and edited for such errors before being printed). Yes everything is DIY, but unfortunately I didn't have my camera when I made my setup. But I will be making a new siphon burner an a new furnace.

I think there is a propane pilot or ignition source to preheat and burn the waste oil. That waste oil would be impossible to ignite otherwise

+MP Dragon I can verify this....I was melting down some computer aluminum and accidentally put some magnesium parts in it resulting in the whole thing catching on fire and causing small explosions

David Lee I managed to repeat the process at lower temperatures and was able to cast magnesium ingots safely but inless you have all safety precautions i would steer clear

1.Yes that was regular concrete, don't use that, it doesn't hold up to the heat. 2.I was planning to make the lining of the furnace thicker, but then it would be immovable. 3.The the angle iron is there because it didn't get enough air and it would not burn properly.

1 Ive used 50/50 concrete sand for 2 years and it retains the hear better but lasts less time 2 My previous foundry weighed over 80kg it was in a 55 gallon oil drum and the cement was 20cm thick it to combat the weight issues i "acquired" an old shopping trolley and used the bottom half to roll the foundry around on 3 perhaps getting a blower with a higher volume but the same velocity would stop that problem Also have you considered using a graphite crucible i used a steel one for a year and if your treat it well and let it cool slowly then it will warp out of shape before it springs a hole. However saying that i just transitioned to an A12 graphite crucible and its great

There is no need to heat the crucible red hot to melt aluminum, then steel the crucible will last longer.

at high temps the graphite slowly burns into CO2 untill the wall thickness causes structural failure, the only real need for graphite is melting metals above iron, and those are done in argon plasma furnaces. i'd like to build one soon, just allocated 1,200 in funds for my projects.

You could have magnesium mixed into the aluminum scrap pile. the vinegar will start to bubble on the magnesium.

oh okay, can you still melt it down if it has magnesium in it? sorry for all the questions, just trying to get an idea before I begin my aluminum smelting process.

Tate Henry magnesium burns and it can make the molten aluminum splatter everywhere so it is more a safety issue

Cast aluminum is alloyed to meat industrial standards. Usually contains copper and other metals. CNC is any aluminum being machined by a computer controled machine. It is not "compacted!" We use a lot of 6061. I melt both extruded, which is almost pure AL and quite soft, not very strong. And I melt castings like intake maniforlds, heads, pump housings, pistons etc. I keep them separated because they have different properties. I use the castings for things that need more strength and that machine better.

if you are looking for some then yes go to a scrap yard or if there is a mechanic around ask them my dad is a mechanic and we have a tonne of scrap we will never use thats not worth much at all

yeah, it took me two days to melt down all aluminum, but I mostly did it to save space in my workshop.

Never said it was galvanized. I know a hand in my shop that worked there for 20 years and got lung cancer from poor air quality... no respirator or ventilation welding and cutting metal. Ya melted metal fumes and particles are great for your lungs guys
