In this straight-forward presentation given at the University of Miami, Abdullah Hakim Quick begins by conducting a scholarly overview of the glorious Muslim past. Eye-opening evidence of a pre-Columbus Muslim presence in the "new world" is just one of the many fascinating topics discussed. The speaker then urges Muslims to look toward the future in the context of past success with the hope of overcoming the numerous challenges and obstacles we face as Muslims living in America today. A classic lecture and a "must see" for Muslims and non-Muslims alike!
Other topics discussed: early Muslim travelers and settlers, contributions to and influences on the West, history, culture vs. religion, superstition, nationalism, women, youth, extremism, arrogance, sincerity, Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam.

I’m Melungeon by way of 3 of my fathers grandparents & my mothers grandfather. I did the DNA testing. It showed 24% African & 29% Native American. The rest was British, French, & German. No Portuguese was present. I’m sure some people have it in their tests, but not everyone. My Melungeon family came from North Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, & West Virginia...so wherever some Melungeon are picking up that ancestry isn’t regional either. Our country is wonderfully diverse!!

Thank you for the video. Hearing the word Geechee took me back to childhood. We were always taught we were part Geechee or Portyghee. We even had an imaginary friend called Mr.Geechees who we believed watched over our family. My great grandmother made sure that even her great grand kids would learn Turkish, Portuguese, and Spanish words, culinary skills, and social customs. I know very little about the possible Muslim heritage since most Melungeons were devout Christians.

I just learned about this in my ancestry last night. I could not sleep. My was weeping because I thought I knew my ancestry by the black history that was taught...only to find out that I am of Spanish, Portuguese, Berber, Morisco, and Native American. My ppl went to the Caribbean first then came to the Carolinas. I knew that I had Jewish/ Hebrew ancestry but did not know that I had Muslim ancestry. I am not African American I will no longer call that. My ancestry showed connection to the Lumbee Indians and I couldn’t understand. My DNA matched Moriscos so now I definitely know who I am.

Greetings. I am from South Carolina and 2 independent DNA tests confirmed that this video is about my family. The other natives here (or brought here) were Arawak (Lucayan/Timucya) during the Yamasee War. Which is my Native American ancestry is from. To the poster about Christian Melungeons, Christianity was the religion prior to Islam in addition to indigenous ones (Egyptian, Hindu, etc). This is why many Christians in the south have a mixed form of Christianity. Not everyone converted. Also, many did convert to Christianity after they got here. My family names include Jackson, Adams, Moore, and many others. I have Gullah/Geechie on my mother's side and my oldest daughter's mother is Geechie. Thanks for the video.

are you black? do people consider you black when they look at you?
@ApstleofJC1
@ApstleofJC1 10 жыл бұрын
Greetings, Mr. Jones. First, what I consider myself and what other see are two different things. I don't consider myself "black" as the term (in the USA) means ancestry from the "Black" races of "Sub-Saharan Africa" (as if the continent can be divided that way). My ancestry is from North/NE Africa, India, and the Americas. So, here in America, I am "white" and Native American. Now, when people see me, they assume I have ancestry from the "black" races of "Sub-Saharan Africa" because that is what they were taught. Anthropologists will tell you I am Caucasoid once they find out my ancestry or apply the fictitious "one-drop-rule" though they can't prove it. Of course people will believe them because they are "respected" though they never traced heritage.

As it is written in Sura 3v3: "It is He Who sent down to thee (step by step), in truth, the Book, confirming what went before it; and He sent down the Law (of Moses) and the Gospel (of Jesus) before this, as a guide to mankind, and He sent down the criterion (of judgment between right and wrong)" As it is written in Acts 9v15, which was written by the same author of the Gospel of Jesus According to Luke previously mentioned in Sura 3v3: "The Lord said to him, “Go, for he (Saul/Paul) is a chosen instrument of Mine, to bear My name before the Gentiles and kings and the sons of Israel" As it is written in 1 Timothy 1v3-7, which was written by Paul previously mentioned in Acts 9v15,: "I urge you ... instruct certain men not to teach strange doctrines, nor to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies, which give rise to mere speculation rather than furthering the administration of God which is by faith. But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. For some men, straying from these things, have turned aside to fruitless discussion, wanting to be teachers of the Law, even though they do not understand either what they are saying or the matters about which they make confident assertions." Following the chain of thoughts there: 1) The Quran says that Allah sent the Gospel to mankind, which implies that the Gospels should be read and respected by Muslims 2) The same author of the Gospel of Luke says in Acts that the Lord called Saul who later was named Paul to be His instrument, which implies that things said by Paul should be considered to have weight and serious consideration since he was an instrument of God 3) Paul warns that certain men have strayed from a good conscience and a sincere faith and they teach weird things as shown by their fruitless discussions about myths and endless genealogies, and although they speak with confidence, whether they realize it or not, they in fact do not know what they are talking about. 4) Conclusion: consider all these things and decide for yourself whether or not you should listen to this person

So the most obvious question would be, if this is a true claim, why then are the Melungeons Christian? Even as far back at the 1700's, a traveling pastor was surprised to find these dark skinned people, who had no church, were well versed in Christianity. But if these claims are true, then it is obvious that in the early history of the Melungeons, they changed from being Muslim, to Christian. Maybe that was the real reason they had to leave their original homes to begin with...

Beja Berber Arawak Banjara Thats me in the avi, I just started doing research on this whole Africans in America before Europeans deal so I would feel silly saying that I am Washitaw, but given the substantial amount of evidence towards both Melungeon and Washitaw, possibly. I think most African Americans have a deeper history than we are allowed to know about. On ancestry.com I researched a Nash great x grandfather back to the Carolinas, cant remember North or South, if I am part Melungeon I suppose my people were some of the ones that were more Black looking and merged into the mainstream African American community of the time, possibly sold into slavery, who knows.
@americasmaker
@americasmaker 10 жыл бұрын
And it was actually only one person in my family that died of that disease, the other person was just a friend of the family who was also from this small town, so that tells me if they were Melungeon also then it seems our families migrated to Alabama together, it seems as if the Melungeon people would be close knit enough to migrate together, possibly to avoid slavery, again who knows.

In 2006, my family put in a lot of effort to make a book about our history and heritage. Our main ancestor was a German who came to Virginia during the revolutionary war. The British were buying troops from Germany (Hessians to be precise) to help them in the war. Germany was tricking them by gathering men who were homeless or weren't contributing, they rounded them up, put a uniform on them and made money off them, my ancestor was single, homeless and jobless. We gathered many names of ancestors and studied their surnames. My great uncle, Samuel, had the idea of a DNA test, hoping to learn more. He and my grandfather scheduled DNA tests at separate labs, Samuel living in Missouri and my grandfather living in Virginia, to see what results they would get. The tests determined we were a match for Melungeon.

@porkinwitz my grandmother was as well, and we were brought up Christian. But there's a thing called assimilation where people are forced to live and do as the rest of the world around them are doing. Native Americans had to do it as well. Just because one is born into a Muslim culture does not mean they have to remain in it. They're are Muslims who convert to Christianity and vice versa.

Even Native Tribes that were taken into slavery at one point were forbidden to practice their traditional religions and forced into Christianity. Incredible history intertwinhbg all our racial, ethnic & religioua/spiritual identies. I know there were not just Portuguese / Getchee & Spainish Muslims who were expelled & as a text fled to the New World along with their Jewish brothers. Sadly, many of the Iberian Jews who escaped as conversos in public but privately kept ' the faith of Moses' In private owned slaves, a few had plantations in the areas of the south and all over the New World into the Caribbean, Mexico, and the rest of Central & South America. Back in the interiors of many southern states they found ancient Israeli coins with Hebrew letters on them. No joke.

Some of these names may have been given, at the time of the slave trade in the US, when ships loaded with slaves, came to, or passed these places, and the names given to them, as representative of the slaves origins. On some islands, and ports, slaves were taken off ship and kept for a time, to be made healthy, before the auction block. By doing this, it increased their value at auction.

Yeah when they were on market in Africa, if they were not sold or selected they just kill them and sell them food or eat them... I would be hoping for a boat ride if I was on market, also more likely to survive the boat ride, than the long desert walk to north africa after being castrated. Look up Africa world's worst prison and see people eating each other to survive, standing room only and sleeping stacked worst than the pics they show on slave ships.

Melungeons don't have anything to do with being Muslim. I have several advanced degrees and I study Melungeon culture. the Africans who made up the ancestors of The Melungeons were most likely Christianised by the Portugeuse before leaving Africa. There are several good reasons to assume this and no evidence of an Islamic connection at all. In fact there is more evidence of Jewish connections to early Melungeons.

"Passing" can be a funny word. Lost of people deemed as "passing for White" are often of predominate European heritage. Personally, I thought Ava and Elvis were just white. Ethnically, I don't find anything ambiguous about racial appearance.

depends who you are calling 'black'...are you using skin color, looks or dna? many families were tested for the samples with pretty much same results. also remember that the portugesse lived under the moors (africans and arabs) for almost 800 years. this is why they dont look like other scandinavians today which is where the goths came from in the 5th century.

Just because Lincoln's mom was a Melungeon, that doesn't mean she was a Muslim. Everyone in that part of the country was Christian's. Many are a protestant group called Baptists. There are also lots of Pentacostal's there.

Sonja BW good to know. I took a DNA test and many of my matches are melungeon names. Ie goins, sizemore, Collins, Moore, and others. I have reached out to some and they have confirmed they are melungeon. My family is from Virginia and eastern Tennessee. We also have dabney matches (which one of my great grandfathers is named after.) a Dabney is married to a reeves. They lived in Kentucky and Virginia. I will look into that also. We are trying to find the names of his parents. My guess is they were melungeon.

I do not know if the Melungeons were Islamic but they were definitely a mixed race people. They had last names like Collins and Gibson, which would suggest Welsh ancestry. Some English and some Portuguese. Other last names associated with this group are: Bowling (Bolin), Chavis (Chavez), Epps, Evans, Fields, Francisco, Gill, Goins, Goodman, Minor, Mise, Mullins, Osborn(e), Phipps, Reeves (Rives, Rieves, Reaves), Ridley (Riddle), Rodrigues, Stowers, Vanover, Williams and Wise. I'm not sure what this guy's motives are, but Islamic faith is a choice. Also, if he was honest about the research, he would state that most scholars concur that this group of people had a diverse ancestry. That of European, Native American and African. Yet, not the same area of Africa that most African Americans ancestry stems from today. It also depends on what part of the country they settled into in the latter years of their first arrival. As many as 200 ethnic groups have been identified as Melungeon. They are found all the way from New York to East Texas and in states in between. This is why Europeans who came into contact with the Melungeons were very confused about their appearance and their origins. They didn't live with Native American tribes prior to English settlement, but they did trade with them. Suggesting that they probably had cousins amongst the group. From my research, the Native Americans would state to the early European settlers that the Melungeons way of life was very different than that of their own. When the Melungeons were denied the right to vote and own property in one area, they came with guns drawn and protested that they were of European decent. Either way, this is a very unique group of people that we do not know much about, but are very relevant concerning American history. To claim that they were all of one faith is not correct. I am a little envious of those who can say that one of their ancestral lines connects to the Melungeons. How interesting!

Misinformation lol you're leaving out too much information. Melungeons are primarily of west african, virginia native and french-german/english-dutch origin. Alot of us have found our backgrounds and have done the paper trail. No connection to Mediterranean people whatsoever. Melungeons were merely descendants of free people of color and trail of tears escapees who fled to the Appalachian to integrate into white culture. Abraham Lincoln was not a melungeon. He was of irish nd British ancestry ONLY and that has been confirmed many times again. The reason many melungeons claimed iberian heritage was to cover up their native and black ancestry due to racial discrimination. Some melungeons were jews due to having ancestors from Netherlands. No link to Mediterranean people whatsoever. The modern descendants might have Mediterranean heritage also but the original melungeons were just a tri racial people escaping discrimination. Sincerely, an actual melungeon living in Appalachia.

Melungeons have Angolan ancestry and some Angolans have some Portuguese admixture like a few other West African countries (Cape Verde, for example). The Angolan kingdoms were converted to Catholicism in the 1500s by the Portuguese. Also, Sephadic Jews were in Spain and Portugal for hundreds of years during the Moorish empire which is where that component comes in. During the Inquisition, some of them were shipped off by the Spaniards and Portuguese to different parts of West Africa (Sao Thome is where they took Sephardic children).

You are wrong about the Mediterranean aspect, I descend from the Bunch line and I do indeed have Mediterranean in my genetic makeup, as well as African American, Native American, and South Asian, and Middle Eastern. I don’t think all Melungeons have the same exact racial mixes. Each of the families need to be studied independently. Also, I suspect that the Mediterranean, Native American, South Asian, and Middle Eastern came into my the line I descend from, Bunch, through one or more females that married into that line.

Punchian,Thanks for reply. Some Berbers I have read have combined religious beliefs making their own from the Coptic Ethiopians and Islam from the peoples by the red sea. i know some Melungeons were not happy with DNA findings but many already knew and "passed" if they could back in the day. They wear both Christian and Muslim symbols on their jewelery. so much to say, such little space. My grandmother always talked about evil eye. That is serious Berber belief for thousands of years! LOUIS FARRAKHAN SAID: ALFONSO IS THE GREATER GOD & BABY GEE IS HIS PROPHET It was Elijah Muhammad, who declared up to his death in 1975, that he was, ‘the Messenger of Allah,’ and that Allah was a man. According to Elijah, Allah had a father named Alfonso and a Jewish mother named Baby Gee. Elijah said the Hereafter is now and all black men are angels. One of these angels he claimed was named Allah, who appeared in human form on the streets of Detroit, Michigan in July of 1930. Farrakhan to this day, teaches this same doctrine- ‘Yacub’s History’ as is evidenced on pages 45-52 of his study guide on his website. It was Mr. Elijah Muhammad who, in the face of much mockery and ridicule, taught that the White man first appeared 6,000 years ago on the Island of Patmos (or Pelan), in the Aegean Sea, where they had been “made” by a 600-year process of selective breeding called “grafting.” Under the command of a Black scientist named Yakub, the 59,999 Blacks who came with Yakub to the island were placed under a system of mating that was based on skin color, in which only lighter-complexioned babies were allowed to survive. Over the course of many generations the population of Patmos began to grow lighter and lighter until, after 600 years, the people became very pale with blue eyes and blonde hair. From this island-based tribe of white-skinned albinos came a behaviorally aggressive race of rulers-namely, the Caucasians-who then spread into every corner of the world and who now represent 9 percent of the world population (1 in every 11 human beings). This teaching of the birth of the White race has been central to the belief system in the Nation of Islam and it has been met with hostility and profound resistance by its critics, who have most commonly termed it “hate teaching.” The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad referred to the Caucasian as “The new man” who “came from us, but he is different from us.” But that “new man” teaching contradicts a hypothesis that modern humans emerged in Europe 40,000-50,000 years ago. It has created a theological schism that has resulted in an impasse in interreligious understanding. But it is a theological impasse that secular scientists have now stepped into to overcome the controversy.
