Buzz Osborne of the Melvins remembers hanging out with bassist Lori Black's mom, Shirley Temple (yes THE Shirley Temple!): ""Shirley is a self- made woman," Osborne said. "Shirley's parents squandered almost every dime she ever made as a child before she had a chance to spend any of it. So she's a pretty tough broad, you know? Their house was unbelievable," said Osborne. "Lots of stuff from the Hearst collection. Amazing sh*t-- they had really great taste. And there was an Oscar sitting there. Shirley talked about her acting a lot. At one point they had her playing drums, and she had a recording of her playing drums when she was a kid, and she sounded like f*****g Buddy Rich. And then she showed us how tap dancing is really just drumming. She tap- danced for us, and she was f***ing amazing."

I didn't see this show but I went UCI during this era and the Melvins played our student center every year, they probably played this show right before or after our show so this brought back so many memories seeing the Lorax on bass and Dale with his gloves and all the pale white skin out in the sun made these shows so fun. I remember at UCI we had strict time slots for noon-time concerts so as not to disrupt the classes and if the show over ran their slot this one teacher, a real stuft shirt, by the rules kinda professor would storm out and shut off the music, it happened a couple times, except when the Melvins played. The Melvins over ran their time slot by 15-20 minutes and professor rulebook just stood there mouth agape, afraid of what might happen to him if he pulled the plug... The Melvins are a freakin awesome band and I loved seeing them play shows like this!

One of the most underrated rock / metal drummers of our era. They're a cult band. Buzz and Dale are pretty much responsible for creating grunge, stonerrock and sludge. Dale also laid out Nirvana's sound, and was a big inspiration for Dave Grohl and many, many other drummers.

I signed the Melvins to Atlantic in 1992. At the time of this show Houdini had already been recorded awaiting release. The Melvins live shows during this period were absolutely on fire! I got used to people standing around not knowing what to make of the band. They scare you, puzzle you and intrigue you all at the same time. In my opinion that’s what great art is supposed to do

Here’s kinda an interesting story about that black Les Paul: in Tacoma, Washington there’s an old guitar store called Guitar Maniacs, which has tons of cool old gear and a lot of history here. About 1984 or 5 Buzz walks in with his wild hair and his dad who was all clean cut and dressed in cowboy clothes. He looks around for a while for a new guitar and finally decides on the black les Paul that you see in this video. If you ever get a chance I highly recommend Guitar Maniacs. Awesome store with nice employees and a great history. A lot of the people from the 80s and 90’s bought gear there.

I have a copy of the Melvins at Lounge Ax from 1991 off the guy who filmed it. Still my favorite. A few people were filming shows with the CANON L1 PRO Hi8, which was the holy grail of camcorders, but $$$ back then.

this is great, love the video, of course when i got into the melvins it was with the eggnog ep and then bullhead, and as much as i love the bass lines in those cds i have a sneaky suspicion that buzz played and recorded the bass lines in the studio cause just by watching lorax play it doesn't seem like she really knows how to play the bass lol

i knew she didn't perform on houdini and that buzz had hinted around in several interviews that she didn't really do any studio recordings on bullhead, either. but then again that doesn't surprise me.
