Stephen Morris. Joy Division's secret ingredient was Stephen Morris. That man is a phenomenal drummer, one of rock music's absolute best. I wish people would give him more credit.

You're absolutely right; he's nicknamed the human drum machine for a reason, and I've always maintained that he was the only truly musically talented member of Joy Division. That being said Ian was a more than exceptional lyricist, and that's where the true charm of the band comes for me.

That of Ian Curtis was not a singing, it was a puking his heart and soul. He was a martyr of his illness and deep sensibility. That's why, in my opinion, although he was technically rough and often off-key, he was in his singing so magnetic and charismatic like nobody else.

Everyone wanted to form a band in 78-79....like the 60s.....no-one cared if they sounded shit....that as sorta the point....on the job training, you just needed basic rythem skills and away you went, hindsight was not a consideration either....it was all ...live for the moment.....those who lasted or were good at it, benefited from a decent manager, many talented players fell away through bad organizing.

@@jawknee4088 shut up you plonka! He had a seizure every time he got on stage, it was a medical thing, he only had an eppy when on stage, never anywhere else. It's because he couldn't dance, so the doctor gave him special medication that he took before every gig that made his body convulse, it's a shame really because the side effects made him hang himself. Everybody knows that.

@@gutz323 Give me proof that he had a seizure every time on stage. His bandmates and wife have said that he had seizures offstage too. You think Ian just asked the doctor "Hey mate, mind giving me some pills that'll make me dance"?

@leeving2999
@leeving2999 9 жыл бұрын
No . I have actually seen people try to duplicate how he moved and they usually have an epic fail . Just my opine but I always felt he moved the way he did because he was uncomfortable with the stage and that is why his dancing looked like " a seizure " as people would call it , just awkward because he didn't practice in reality but it was him . It's sad that many people saw him have actual seizures on stage to where he had to be carried off and for some reason his dancing got lumped in with his seizures . Many fans didn't even realize what he was going through . As for Elvis and ugh , MJ ? Hundred of hours of work and copying went into their moves . We did see people Moon Walk in DC 2 years before Jackson had it shown on videos via MTV. We have footage and documentaries on Michael Jackson rehearsing for hours . Elvis copied but still had rehearsals for hours . Ian just had an unnatural movement that was his . As for drugs ? The only time I can find where he is so waxed he can't open his eyes is in the official video for Love Will Tear Us Apart . Several said he was on drugs but then again most that have Clonic - Tonic Seizures ( and are on the older meds ) will often sleep a day after having one or be sleepy for a for days after . He could have had one before recording the video . The Anti-Siezure agents back then also caused horrible side effects . Dilantan and Phenobarbital, a barb, ( the choice drugs during that period ) cause severe depression , suicidal ideation and anything with barbiturates can knock you out if you take a few extra .

@Angie Gomez You are correct in all you said, he was a people pleaser but Ian was very affectionate toward the band and wanted to please them. Ian was thee kind of person who could hardly say no to anyone in the band or music industry when he was to sick too perform. he gave his all and at the end of his life, not even that was enough. The band was so angry he took hid life and not going to America for a moment crushed their dream. But know one was thinking was Ian had been through it all and how he lost his way. I felt the band was wrong for feeling negative towards Ian when he was the sick one and didn't have any possitive support. Things could have been different for Ian. What he truly needed to do at the end like Ian's wife sad in her book Touching from a distance, He need to go in the Hospital for complete rest and get well and not be pressured in goinging to America. What Ian really needed and said and wanted himself at the end was get out of the music industry. Ian had lived his dream and just wanted his life back and said to wife Debbie he wanted his family back he wanted her and Natalie back in his life when he returned from America in his loving personable last letter to his wife. Ian should have never been left alone that last night. He had given all the signs that he was in trouble and Debbie thought in her mind when she left the home to go to her moms to sleep she thought,Ian we be alright by himself. She was trying to make herself believe that. Ian had people always with him he never truly was ever alone. He lost his way all alone , that Sunday Morning May 18,1980 after 4am and 430 am and hung himself. He touched so many lives-"He's gone but not forgotten"

I think he would have danced this way regardless of the chemicals he had on board, but to say that a person who took buckets of epilepsy meds and drank malt liquor wasn't on drugs is a bit silly. He was on a constant cocktail of very strong drugs, all of which were chosen specifically to alter his brain activity, and none of which was meant to be mixed with booze, which itself is a powerful mind-altering drug. Doesn't take anything away from his getting lost in the music. Makes it more impressive that he kept soldiering on as long as he did. Must have been utterly exhausting.

Curtis was an incredibly troubled man; fairly ill, didn't want to live very long - all he was really certain of was that he could get up with a microphone or his Vox Phantom and pour out the contents of his head. Seeing him perform live you can tell how much absolute discomfort he was in, especially with the sensory barrage of the band, the audience, etc. clashing together... there were apparently more than a few times where he just completely shut off and fainted in a heap onstage. But you can also tell he knew what he was getting himself into, and one guesses he didn't care as long as he got to do what he did.

Epileptics do not faint, they lose all control of their bodies and they are still aware of there surrounding, may not remember it, but it is an overload of the senses and high stress makes it worse!

He was not fairly ill, he was extremely ill, he couldn't even hold his baby in his arms for fear of dropping her. My partner has dealt with this and as long as he is prepared for his triggers he can get by.

@@bdj7430 You're generalizing epilepsy and adding to the poor awareness it already has. Not every epileptic has the same type of seizures, and consciousness is oftentimes lost if you "faint" (depending on the type of seizure).

Bernard Sumner was very eloquent in saying that Ian was not on any drugs but he was simply lost in the music. So many people assume lead singers are strung out but most of the time, they literally lose themselves amongst the rhythym - a characteristic of a great front man.

Ian had an amazing talent at singing perfectly off key. So close to sounding awful and just off sounding good. We will never see such ability again

I don’t know. A lot of English groups from that era had guys that weren’t the best vocalists, but their style worked with the music. Robert Smith and Richard Butler immediately come to mind.
