I think the filter at the bottom of the hose helps with the flow rate due to more separation from the bag to filter.....enough to make much of a difference? It's noticeable, but probably not too important compared to the inconvenience of tipping over your bottle. I buy activated charcoal from the pet store and use it to make a pre-filter for my Squeeze. It can make the water taste better.......Great review as always, thank you!

Excellent review Mark! There are a few things I really like about this system, one being it filters heavy metals. The other is that it comes apart to dry, nice feature. It is also very reasonably priced. I am a Sawyer fan because the mini will filter up 100,000 liters depending on water quality so I would be hard pressed to change at this point but for places where heavy metals are an issue, this definitely would be great. The mod you did was an improvement for sure and I would feel the same about the filter being on the bottom of the tube. Thanks for sharing. :) :)

When you get to the core filter component, it looks exactly like a BeFree and the same sort of technology that a Sawyer system uses if you crack one open. My issue with this particular filter is that there are all these loose parts and caps to keep track of, that can easily be lost. None of these are critical to filtering water, but it seems overly complicated. I’ve also never understood why people would want to carry the “straw” mode filter, rather than just a water bottle that can screw onto a filter so they can drink on site, but also carry water with them. You can use a Sawyer just fine as a gravity filter - just attach it to a bag with dirty water in it and hang it like any other gravity filter. The benefit of the Sawyer over all these other systems is that it comes with that syringe that allows for back flushing in the field. Using a water bottle for backflushing lacks the power to penetrate clogged filter membranes, and the water just flows into the paths of least resistance, rather than fixing clogs (my experience, at least). All of these filters are fine with filtering snow melt, spring water, and clear lake and stream water sources. But filter out of a wetland, and they clog fast. The carbon pre-filter shown in this review should go a long way in helping with performance issues, and that can be cleaned in the field to a degree, but once the filter membranes themselves get micro-particles in them it’s game over without a back flush system. It would be interesting to see how well a water bottle as a back flush system would work for this filter when compromised. Shaking or swishing the filter around in clean water just doesn’t work, in my experience. Overall, I would want to see a review of a filter where flow rate is compromised by less than clear water, and then it is serviced with flow rate restored in the field. If that can’t be demonstrated, I have to carry a backup filter, or a proven filter from the start.

Their website gives different ratings for their filters all with the same tech. Some places indicate 1500 liters for the individual filter that comes with the bag. Other places say the 5000 liters. Personally, I would go with smaller amount...especially with the affordability of filters and replacement parts.

Yes, I noted that. I can say the more backflushing the longer life the filter will have. Not so the carbon filter though. Thanks for commenting

Excellent piece of kit Mark. I like that you can use it for many applications and what it filters out and flow rate. I really like that you can take it apart to let it dry out as well. Right now I am using the Woods water straw from CTC and have a Seychelle water bottle extreme filter as well. was going to buy the Befree bottle but am now quite interested in this product. Cheers my friend!

Anyone that backflushes at home needs to evaluate their home water system first. If it’s not from a municipal system, or is otherwise high in minerals, then back flushing can do more harm than good - you want to make sure to back flush using distilled water in this case, to avoid problems.

Good review, and that looks like an excellent bit of kit, which is halfway between a water filter and a purifier, with the carbon filter. I also like that the carbon filter is replaceable, as I think they have a shorter life than the membrane filter. Where I live viruses are not an issue, but heave metals are. This would be the perfect solution for me. I have one question. The carbon filter should take out some or most of the funky taste from dirty water. My question is, from your experience, does it remove bad tastes?
@MarkYoungBushcraft
@MarkYoungBushcraft Жыл бұрын
So, the area I use it in is high in natural tannins. They colour the water brownish and have a bit of an earthy taste. The filter will remove the taste but not the colour. Tannins are very hard to remove. Thanks for commenting

I need a little help. I watched the video to see how to put my gravity filter together. Thank you so much for the easy instructions. But my hose to bag connector is not angled. It is a blue straight connector. Is there some place I can purchase the angled grey connector that is on your set up. Thank you! Doretta

Hello. Glad you enjoyed the video. If you received the straight connector with your Membrane Solution filter I would suggest you contact them directly. I found them good to deal with. I looked around for a right-angle connector like what came with mine without much success. I see lots of straight ones but no angle ones. Hope this helps

What perfect timing Mark. In the next couple weeks, I was planning on picking up an MSR gravity filter, or one like it, but this seems to be a little cheaper, and without the carbon fibres, this seems like it would be much less likely to break (they warn on some of those that dropping it can break the cartridge) One question though is did you get a chance to really run this thing? Do you think that it can handle water that’s a bit dirty with out clogging? Finally convinced the family to go into the real woods (no showers, toilets etc…) so I’ll need to keep us all well watered.

I have filtered maybe 10 full bags of water so about 60 liters. No issue with clogging but I do try to make sure I start with as clear a water source as possible. It is hard to know how long the carbon filter will last but I do dry it out after getting home, the giving it a bit of a shake to ensure the particles don't compact. Not sure if it helps or not. The only real test is keeping an eye of the flow rate. If it really starts to slow down then consider replacing the carbon filter. If the filter starts to clog at least it should not be allowing contaminants to pass. Hope this helps. Very exciting to hear you have the family convinced to go along. The best I can do is to have Gina go car camping

Interesting option. I watched a video the other day about something called a millbank bag, have you ever used one? If you have are they worth carrying in our part of the country?
@liammalarky3483
@liammalarky3483 2 жыл бұрын
Back in the 1980's Millbank bags weren't readily available (even as surplus) so we used cloth coin bags as used by the banks etc.
@MarkYoungBushcraft
@MarkYoungBushcraft 2 жыл бұрын
The value of a Millbank bag depends on where you gather your water from. If the water appears to be clear then it does not add much to your system. If the water is cloudy, silty or muddy, then the Millbank bag can really help. It does not purify the water and only partially filters it. It helps remove larger particles but you will still need to use some other method to make your water safe. It may also extend the life of your filter by preventing it from becoming clogged. In many cases, you could use a cotton bandana to pre-filter your water going into a container. Hope this helps

For post hike / season cleaning, do you also back flush with a solution that has a little bleach mixed into it, for disinfectant purposes?
@MarkYoungBushcraft
@MarkYoungBushcraft 2 жыл бұрын
The company recommend clean water only as detergents and bleach can clog or otherwise damage the filter. Thanks for commenting

How often must the activated carbon filter be changed? If the activated carbon filter is saturated with pollutants and you then filter water containing humic substances, for example in autumn, all the collected pollutants in the activated carbon filter are released at once and you poison yourself.
@MarkYoungBushcraft
@MarkYoungBushcraft 2 жыл бұрын
The company does not state specifically how long the carbon filter will last but state their filter will clean 5000 liters of water. Of course, the turbidity of the water will affect service. They do also advise if the flow rate slows significantly over time then that is the better indicator of condition. The filter is designed to slow down and stop running rather than release contaminants. I expect it will be the carbon filter that clogs first as it acts as a pre-filter to remove larger suspended particles Hope this helps
@rondennis841
@rondennis841 2 жыл бұрын
@@MarkYoungBushcraft This is exactly the problem. The carbon filter stores the pollutants and heavy metals and, for example, in stagnant water where leaves float, the water becomes acidic and the pollutants of the carbon filter are suddenly released and poison you. It is better to filter without a carbon filter.
