The amount of flack I've gotten for never having seen this, well time to put it all to rest as I watch Memento giving my reaction, breakdown, recap, ending explained, & spoiler review while trying to uncover the deeper hidden meanings to the Christopher Nolan joint. It's interesting seeing the similarities ranging from Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Inception, The Prestige, Insomnia, Tenet, & Oppenheimer with a more low-budget flick. There's actually a moment in the movie where the story about Sammy is being told where there is a flash cut from the actor that portrays Sammy to Guy Pearce. A very quick hint for the very end of the movie.

Out of all Nolan's films, I'd argue that this one has the absolute best use of the "unconventional timeline" structure. Because unlike his other films (where nonlinear structure just draws thematic parallels, creates mystery, or lets us explore memories) the backwards structure in this film allows us to LITERALLY experience events the same way the main character does: with zero knowledge of how we got there. It's so simple, yet completely ingenious.

I love how Nolan gives the audience the same condition by telling it in the order he does. Every scene you have to decide if you trust what a characters says because we have no knowledge of what had happen before..

I've seen the movie 4 times and each time I have a hard time remembering certain plot points because of the way it's structured. Nolan seems to have structured the movie to make the viewer experience the same memory loss over and over again. It's crazy

Think of time in the same way you think of coordinates. If time was non-existent, we would live our whole lives simultaneously, every moment at once. Time isn't a construct, its a basis of reality

The fun thing is that even up until this point with Oppenheimer, you can watch Christopher Nolan's whole filmography start to finish, or finish to start, and you're going to get a full story about Christopher Nolan's filmmmaking and style, and only once you get to the end will you see and appreciate the full picture. You can paint out his signature styles all the way through back to Memento and even furthermore in Following before that.

This is the film that launced Nolan’s career into the upper tier of directors. A truly master work of writing and filmography. the way it was shot in reverse so we are experiencing the memory loss from Leonard’s perspective. Even the performances, especially rom Pearce, are incredible. Wonderful movie. Deserving of many rewatches, almost demanding of them.

The Matrix reunion of sorts with Carrie Ann-Moss and Joe Pantoliano and I believe Moss recommend Pantoliano for the supporting role. The whole storyline going backwards, rewinding before leading to Pantoliano's character's death at the hands of Pearce's character. The whole backtracking your steps with the whole short term memory is just intriguing.

Whenever people ask me for movie recommendations I *always* suggest Memento first. I don't give away any details about the story but I explain the structure of the film because that's more important. The first scene is the end of the story and the second scene is the beginning of the story. The film zigzags back and forth between the monochromatic first half and the colored second half with the monochromatic scenes going forward and the colored scenes going backward until the end of the film, which is the middle of the story, where the last monochromatic scene becomes the first colored scene. That explanation alone is enough to get people intrigued, confused and excited about Memento. I love watching KZfaq reactions to Memento because they are how I imagine my friends and coworkers seeing it!!

When I was taking my intro to film class in college, this film was my midterm. There were questions we had to evaluate that were all opened responses to question that were very in depth and we could only watch the movie twice. Hardest test I’ve ever taken. Masterful film tho

Honestly my favorite Nolan pretty easily. I think it's the movie that best suits his interests/skill set and also the best-written dialogue of his career (just his best screenplay in general). Also think it's the one where the cleverness and the emotional side of the film only enhance each other.

Rented this from Blockbuster around 2008 and it quickly became (and still is) my favorite Nolan film, especially because of his collaboration with his brother Jonathan which based the script on his own short story. Still blows me away and honestly is so good that I often forget that it's even a Nolan film, I just think it's a great story because of its own merit.

I liked the little shout out to Insomnia towards the end, cuz that's my personal fav of Nolan's alongside Oppenheimer. Ironically it's the movie that contains the least of his hallmarks but it's such an atmospheric slow burn thriller that gets under your skin with two powerhouse performances in Pacino and Williams.

I remember watching being like okay I think I get it It took me maybe 3 of those scenes to not get confused in the plot/what's kind of happening in the movie but such a good film & loved the twist. Same. This was the first movie of Nolan's that I saw, not long after it came out. Then I heard he was going to do batman and it was probably the most hyped I have ever been for a movie and Batman Begins exceeded all my expectations. It's insane how brilliantly good this movie is, from its somewhat simplicity of story and how the structure and editing approach altered how we understand reality through the lens or scope of perspective. Oddly, when I think of how Nolan plays with time and perspective I always think of Obi-Wan quoting to Luke in RoTJ how the truths we cling to depend greatly on our point of view.

I first saw this movie back in cinemas with my Dad in 2000 and I have probably rewatched it dozens of times since then. It's one of those movies that I will happily sit down and watch with people who have never seen it before because it's just as much fun watching people try and process/unpack it as it is watching the actual film itself. It's also incredibly well-written - there a number of little details in the movie that blow your mind when you really think about them. For instance, one reason why Leonard probably answered the phone and started talking without really thinking to ask who was on the other end was because he was talking to Teddy, the guy whose voice he's been hearing habitually every day for the last however many years straight. In other words, Teddy has been _conditioning_ Leonard to become comfortable with his voice so he would lower his defenses around him.

First saw this film 20 years ago. Seen it so many times and it gets better each time. And used to question whether Lenny and Sammy were the same person until I learned that you can see Lenny replace Sammy in one frame of the film. During the scene in the hospital where Sammy is sitting in the chair after hks wife has died. For one for frame you see Lenny in the chair instead of Sammy.

In high school my psychology teacher let us watch a movie at the end of each unit, summing up what we’d just learned. This was the movie for ‘memory and levels of consciousness’, and it was such a divine example.

This is my favorite Nolan. And probably the only Nolan I loved alongside Inception. His other movies, while being extremely smart and well done, I always feel they lacked heart. I am always more interested in character studies and this was his best one. I would have really liked if he could do something like this again.

It is crazy that this was Nolan's first movie, and it is this damn good and well done. Also, the idea for this movie came from a short story his brother wrote (who also cowrote the script for this movie) called memento mori if I am not mistaken. Às a Nolan fan since watching this flick back in the day, for me personally besides insomnia and inception, the combo of him and his brother is damn near unbeatable.

Nolan's gimmick is TIME, going backwards - memento, losing time - Insomnia, double time - Batman Begins, ticking time - TDK, cheating time - The Prestige, slowing time - Inception, time affected by gravity - Interstellar, syncing time - Dunkirk, reversing time - Tenet, I haven't seen Oppenheimer but from what I know, the movie has 3 timelines and felt like a movie trailer... The constant with Nolan is the passing of time and women in refrigerators

I got a concussion playing football and had short term memory loss. It's pretty scary to go through. I would ask my parents the same question over and over. When I first watched this movie I really related to Guy Pierces' character.

Not sure if you spotted it or not but the scene of Sammie Jenkins sitting alone after his wife died, somebody walks past him and the scene changes but just before it does, his face changes to Leonard's face. I only saw that after a few watches.

He just makes up anything he wants to at the time so that he can "live" another day. He has tattoos but of course he doesn't remember why he put them there. He merely uses them for his next days adventure. I saw this when I was completely alert and in the zone and yet I couldn't get my mind around having a 15 second memory. Imagine, EVERY 15 seconds he has forgotten what happened 15 seconds ago. Everybody else's time, motives etc. are superfluous. They just provide him with a story line for the next 15 seconds. If I had this disability I would euthanize myself. We are only who we are due to our memories. No memory we may as well not exist. Great movie and reaction!

Welcome to the deep end of the film-making pool. Or perhaps this is the Marianas' Trench end. There aren't too many films that demand a next-day-or-sooner rewatching. 1995's FUNNY BONES fits in there as well, and I always recommend immediate-no-pause rewatching.

The ultimate “trust no one, not even yourself” film lol. A favorite. Love early Christopher Nolan. Not as much a fan of his later works from what I’ve seen. Maybe because I found his first ones to be so good? Great points about the cinema noir performances, like the femme fatale and detached detective. Excellent acting by characters who are also excellent actors. Natalie is still conniving but more understandable after you finish the movie lol. Great analysis at the end.

ngl, i saw this movie when it came out with some friends, we were chilling, got a bit drunk and this movie blow my mind so hard. i had to rewatch it a a couple of times to fully understood it.

After the first memory lapse, I knew we would be watching the movie in forward and the story in reverse, that was pretty obvious, but I liked the creativity.

Our professor made us watch this movie in class in college. Or, well, after class. Doesn't hit as hard in a stuffy classroom full of people on a Wednesday night. I wish I could've appreciated it more 😂

"I am not smarter then this movie" That is okey buddy. No one is. Many people like to act like it, but no one gets everything on their first watch on this one. I have seen it several times and seen it in chronological order. The script is made to perfection when it comes to stringing you along with hints without giving you everything. This one is perfect for rewatching and perfect for first time watching. Masterfull details like, Lenny tells us in the beginning that you learn to trust your own hand writing. When Teddy pressurizes him to write something about Natalie, he doesn't use his normal hand writing so that he doesn't trust it later. He changes it eventually with his real hand writing.

I first saw this film in a high school psychology course a couple years before Batman Begins came out, so I was unfamiliar with Nolan. I can't decide if I like Memento or The Prestige more, but Memento had one of the best twists I had ever seen. Getting to watch it at school felt like a crime.

I won't say why, but since you enjoyed this, you also might enjoy The Machinist (2004). I feel like most people are slightly aware of it for Christian Bale's body transformation, but I think it's pretty underviewed/underrated.
