What’s the Memoirs of a Geisha movie about?
In 1929, a young girl from a poor fishing village in Japan, Chiyo (Suzuka Ohgo), and her sister Satsu (Samantha Futerman) are sold by their father to the owner of a geisha house. They are quickly separated and Chiyo finds herself confronted with the strictness of the housekeeper and the harshness of the life of an apprentice geisha. She also has to face the jealousy-ridden hostility of Hatsumomo (Gong Li), the star geisha of the house, who succeeds in relegating her to the status of a simple servant. Chiyo has lost all hope when she is suddenly seduced by the kindness of a man (Ken Watanabe), chairman of an electricity company, with whom she falls in love. She then decides to do everything she can to deserve his attention. Another geisha, Mameha (Michelle Yeho), takes her under her wing and begins to teach her the rudiments of the trade by becoming her "big sister". Thanks to Mameha and helped by her determination, she soon becomes, under the name Sayuri (Zhang Ziyi), a famous and admired geisha throughout Hanamachi. But success does not bring her closer to the one she secretly loves because a geisha no longer has the right to love. Moreover, Nobu (Kōji Yakusho), the president's close friend, is interested in Sayuri and interposes himself between them. It will take the Japanese rout of World War II and the end of age-old traditions for Sayuri and the president to finally be together.

I enjoy this scene is an metaphor for Chiyo and Hatsumom's positions. It isn't quite like an underdog story bit the idea that even someone weaker still has the means to overpower and stronger adversary

Chiyo didn't deserve Nobu's love. She couldn't grasp the concept of gratitude if it bit her on the face.

Chiyo you and your heart is so beautiful who could Hatsuoumo steal from you? She has to fabricate vicious lies because when Hatsuoumo first saw your face she knew you would outshine her.

I’m curious. Isn’t Nobu supposed to be deformed in the face and missing an arm? Deformed because he jumped on top of a bomb to save a comrade-in-arms. As Sayuri described it in the book, Nobu looked like a sweet potato that had gotten roasted in a fire. He was supposed to look horribly disfigured, according to the book, and he was supposed to be missing an arm. So what happened here?

I am suprised that Nobu-san have both arms here, in the book i own, he lost one of his arms because of injury

If the chairman hired chiyos teacher to train chiyo to be a geisha for him, then why the teacher telling chiyo to turn her attention to nobu? What, the chairman not rich enough to mislead hastumno?

From what i think when i read and watch the novel, i think chairman originally want Chiyo for Nobu as a "gift" for his friendship. If not that i think beside hiring and sponsoring Mameha to become Chiyo mentor, he cannot meddle with how Mameha do her mentoring since she know how to do it the best way. You can see how conflicted the chairman is now that he has feeling with Chiyo, lol.

Imagine youre eating a delicious meal of beautiful pastries and fruit-a person who hates you might try to steal a bite or mess it up in some way. Now imagine youre eating a meal of fermented raw cows liver. 😷 Even though your enemy is jealous they cant bring themselves to steal a bite of that nasty disgusting meal-even if it hurts you. Any woman would want the chairman-He's like Zuckerberg or Musk. Not bad looking and very, very wealthy. Nobu was horribly burned with an amputated arm, most people can't bear to look at him. Hatsumomo won't take Nobu to bed because she would be too disgusted by his injuries.

My understanding of the novel was that the chairman wanted chiyo but when nobu in fact showed interest he stepped down out of the love and respect he had for his friend. I haven’t read the book in a long time but that’s my take from it

I am so glad that I watch movies like this with a normal translation, not with that awful accents. Why are you diong this, my dear americans? Either switch to japanese and read subtitles. Or let the actors speak normal english.

While I understand that as a Japanese movie it would make sense to have it in Japanese but it isn't just in English for convenience. Post Meiji Japan strived for modernity to maintain its position so it wouldn't fall to colonization like it's neighbors. As such given the time period it isn't a strange that the use of English would be used. Being second generation I am more than familiar w ESL in Japan but given the time period it's historically appropriate (even for a story that is known to have inconsistencies and exaggerations)

@@WayToDawn72 It is not a question about only THIS movie. It it just a thing americans do always. Two germans in the middle of Germany would also talk with eachother in english with hard accent in hoolywood films. And so on.

@@TheMagicAround that's not possible wo a lot of vocal training and I can't think of anyone who went out of their way to get rid of their accent just to satisfy strangers they probably will never meet
