This movie is literally an American fanfic of what Americans believe a Geisha is and not what the life of Geishas really is like... The creator of this story betrayed confidentiality and gave the Geisha's real name and ruined her life.

It’s sad that his greed and ignorance led to the demise of the person who trusted him. Geisha’s who break their silence and share the secrets of the geishas are shunned. He effectively ruined this person’s life and reputation

oh she existed, but her name was really Mineko Iwasaki, whom Arthur Golden threw under the bus and outed her in the acknowledgements of the book after promising her he wouldn't, she sued him for defamation and breech of contract after she got shunned by the Geisha community, because she was not allowed to say anything, her real last name was used in the book, Sayuri's family last name was Mineko's family name, She wrote a book herself called Geisha a life.

to clarify / elaborate, the man who sold sayuri to her okiya's last name was tanaka, a shortened version of Mineko's family name at birth as opposed to sayuri's birth name which was chiyo sakamoto. Although interesting to note that Mineko's mother was named chie akamatsu, maybe just a coincidence and maybe golden never knew her mothers name, maybe he did, but he took a lot of liberties with mineko's story either way

@@sunbun3499That was a common name in Japan, that the real Geisha ho wrote the book was not sold to a Geisha house. That's absolute rubbish. As is most of the script. This movie as a result was not showed in Japan. 22:01

I have a soft spot for this film, I first watched it when I was a teenager, I loved all things Japan, nowadays I do think it’s quite an odd film in that none of the 3 main female characters are played by Japanese actors … the backstory behind the book seems a little shady too (based on things I have read anyway). Zhang Ziyi is so beautiful and talented, as is Michelle Yeoh, and Gong Li is so impressive in the film, I can keep all of the factors in mind and still just appreciate the artistic aspects to this film, in particular the costumes and the music is just beautiful.

It was never meant to be autobiographical or historically accurate. They changed alot of it.

@@zoebeisner3370 i was reading about a lawsuit. After the Japanese edition of the novel was published, Arthur Golden (the books author) was sued for breach of contract and defamation of character by Mineko Iwasaki, a retired geisha he had interviewed for background information while writing the novel, he revealed a lot of information that he promised her would be kept confidential. Still like the book and film, but, that’s all I was mentioning :-)

Mameha is the perfect Geisha but doesn't let her emotions for the baron run. Hatsumomo is a Successful geisha but combust and self destruct for not living the life/love she wants. Pumpkin is a failed Geisha that wished for her own, but resorts in Prostitution. Sayuri "survives because of the drive in her" ..... no. Shes not about survival she was about love too, she could care less to "survive." Sayuri is THE Geisha that finally surrenders to the fact. No love, no wants, just a vessel of art. Everything about her transformed into a geisha except one thing was left : "The heart dies a slow death." He had something going explaining the outcome of all Geishas, the possible stories idk how he drops the ball on Sayuri's message.

Hollywood movie making is not into making historical documentaries but is solely base on the perspective of the producers and directors of the event. Look at movies like JFK, Pearl Harbor, Patton and so on, they are not 100% accurate but an artistic depiction of a time or period in history. This movie , as many , is a beautiful illusion of a time, it’s dramatic in nature and magically presented. So remember, if you are looking for an historical documentary this is not it, but if you want to be entertained and taking away on a magical ride this movie will do what a good novel will , transport you.

Not a single Japanese producer🤣🤣 this movie and the book was so unbelievably inaccurate. Beautiful but hurtful to Japanese history and culture.... and a slap to the real woman he ripped off

This is a great video. This movie was made in a time where everyone wasn’t offended by everything, and it’s a beautiful movie. Art is for everyone. If they didn’t get history or culture 1000% accurate that’s okay. Relax everyone.

@@cribs3819 In the beginning he said the character of Sayuri was fictional, but some years laters a true Geisha exposed him. She has told him her life in secret and many of the geisha world secrets that he made public in the world. Exaggerating things as the virginity auction, love interest inventions and so on. Not to mention they only cast chinese women to potray japanese culture

@@mikkim11 the problem with this movie ( honest I really love it ) is that it is completly inacurate about japanese tradition . They made a mess about gheisha tradition and made a mixture between gheisa and oiran which is a prostitute. Just I've found out in Japan this movie can't be seen at all ( suppose because all these mess they have done with Japanese tradition). Almost evrything in this is complet inacurate .

I think he translated much of the feeling of the situation, to be abandoned and caught up in an industry that was your only form of survival, while still being a child and subject to inescapable worldwide changes. I think everyone in the world feels this way at times, thrown into the wave at the beach..inescapable and thoughtless to your feelings. Lost of control and relying on whatever gifts you have to overcome the system. It may not be historically accurate on all points, but the plot is extremely relatable no matter where you live or when.

Those kimono are beautiful! I wonder what happened to the costumes from the film. They would be quite valuable and collectible, or as inspiration for a new fashion brand.

@Ka chi I know the film industry sells fantasy and I’m ok with that… If I were in charge I might have had real kimono but I wasn’t. I will have to take your word on the quality of the kimono.

The world of the Geisha is still a very discreet world, that is why their were no Japanese actress playing the roles except "mother", the movie does not follow Iwasski Mineko's book. Also it's important to note this movie was not shown in Japan. This movie is so far off from the book, but that's Hollywood as usual. I would recommend if you really want to read her story read the book, it's wonderful. I think it's a disgrace to Japan and he Geisha what this movie misportrayed. 16:25

You don't have to be a geisha to play one. I don't mean to be rude but that is absurd. Many actresses have played geishas wirhout being one. There must be another reason why no Japanese women weren't chosen for this movie save one.

28:23 "because I am not here to do documentary". This should be enough to silence the further complaints about the film. Enter it as in eutopia. Forget what you know. It's a fantasy guys. Now, don't be too greedy; this isn't your interpretation thus only perceive. Also hear the sentences from 43:55 with a bit more clarity.

Arthur Golden was not accurate in this book. The movie was beautiful but the actresses were Chinese.

The only thing wrong is that Chinese actresses are cast as Sayuri, Hatsumomo and Mameha. Shouldn’t have the actresses been Japanese? 🫢⭐️

To me this was a little Like Madam Butterfly with her love, wishes and dreams. However, still a very dodgy work choice for a woman. Ken Wantanbe is one of my favourite actors and I watched this picture because of two things coming together. The book becoming a best seller and Ken. I am dyslexic therefore, reading for me is never for enjoyment just a chore to enable me to function as an adult. Pictures (Films, movies), are y way to connecting with what others read. In the written discipline ones imagination can paint the scene. In my world that is left to the film makers. All of them.

The authentic make-up and kimono look so much more beautiful and timeless. They tried to "modernize" it but it just looked dated!

For those moaning about this ‘Japanese’ based movie having Chinese and Malaysian actors play the Japanese roles, please understand what the word ‘acting’ means. 🤦🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️ This movie came out amazingly with them so quite the cries & simply appreciate the effort & time they put into this movie to appear Japanese for everyone because I know they look more Geisha than us! 😂

Im so sickened by the truth behind this arthur golden’s book & movie adaptation. I loved them at the time not knowing the real story behind it. Until i got into the real geisha story. The mineko iwasaki’s real story. Golden you are wrong and tarnished the old tradition of other people’s culture.

I watched it and it was a powerful young lady, Honest Heart and devotion, the little girl loved her friend, or sister, I think she was a sister . The weather and pain wouldn't get in her way, to find her sister. A long story short . I enjoyed it very much ☺️👍✨💅🏻🌾🌺🌿🍃🌄🏚️👩‍❤️‍👩🌩️🌨️☁️⛺🏕️⛺🏕️🏚️🛖🏞️🛖
