SYLT - Trauminsel, Naturparadies, Sehnsuchtsziel, Nobel-Insel, Massentourismus ... Es gibt viele Eigenschaften, die Deutschlands größter Nordseeinsel zugeschrieben werden. Es stimmen auch viele (Vor-) Urteile über eines der beliebtesten Reiseziele Deutschlands. Die mit etwas über 99 qkm größte deutsche Nordseeinsel hat so viele Facetten, das für jeden Anspruch das passende dabei ist. Seit die zweite Marcellusflut (Grote Mandränke) im Jahre 1362 das heutige Sylt vom Festland trennte, haben sich mannigfaltige Natur-und Kulturräume gebildet. Im Westen brandet die offene Nordsee an einen 40 km langen Strand. Die Ostküste bildet das Wattenmeer mit seiner im Nationalpark "Schleswig-Holsteinisches Wattenmeer" geschützten Artenvielfalt. Dazwischen findet sich eine reiche Dünenlandschaft, die zwischen Kampen und Westerland auf einem Saaleeiszeitlichen Geestkern aus Geschiebemergel fusst. Hier findet sich auch die Uwe Düne, die mit 52,5m die höchste Erhebung der Insel ist. Die Küstenheide des Listland mit seinen drei Wanderdünen ist das größte zusammenhängende Wanderdünengebiet Europas und zeigt zur Zeit der Heideblüte im August eines der schönsten und ursprünglichen Landschaftsbilder des Landes. Im Osten der Insel gibt es ein weites, grünes Marschenland mit alten Friesendörfern und einer geologischen Attraktion, dem Morsumkliff zu entdecken. Seit 1927 verbindet der 11 km lange Hindenburgdamm, der hier nahe Morsum die Insel erreicht, Sylt mit dem Festland.

SYLT - dream island, nature paradise, posh island, chic hangout, mass tourism, lonely, crowded... There are many attributes attributed to Germany's largest North Sea island. There are also many (pre-) judgements about one of Germany's most popular travel destinations. At just over 99 square kilometres, Germany's largest North Sea island has so many facets that there is something for everyone. Since the second Marcellus tide (Grote Mandränke) in 1362 separated what is now Sylt from the mainland, diverse natural and cultural areas have formed. In the west, the open North Sea surges onto a 40 km long beach. The east coast is formed by the Wadden Sea with its biodiversity protected in the "Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park". In between is a rich dune landscape, which between Kampen and Westerland is based on a Saale ice-age core of boulder clay. Here you will also find the Uwe Dune, which at 52.5m is the highest elevation on the island. The coastal heath of Listland with its three shifting sand dunes is the largest contiguous shifting sand dune area in Europe and, at the time of the heather blossom in August, presents one of the most beautiful and natural landscapes in the country. In the east of the island there is a wide, green marshland with old Frisian villages and a geological attraction, the Morsumkliff, to discover. Since 1927, the 11 km long Hindenburg Dam, which reaches the island here near Morsum, has connected Sylt with the mainland.
