Highlights of Heat 4 of the Men's 400m Individual Medley during the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Swimming has featured on the programme of all editions of the Games since 1896. The very first Olympic events were freestyle (crawl) or breaststroke. Backstroke was added in 1904.
In the 1940s, breaststrokers discovered that they could go faster by bringing both arms forward over their heads. This practice was immediately forbidden in breaststroke, but gave birth to butterfly, whose first official appearance was at the 1956 Games in Melbourne. This style is now one of the four strokes used in competition.
Women's swimming became Olympic in 1912 at the Stockholm Games. Since then, it has been part of every edition of the Games. The men's and women's programmes are almost identical, as they contain the same number of events, with only one difference: the freestyle distance is 800 metres for women and 1,500 metres for men.

I was at 2012 and watched this race, they make it look so easy to swim so fast but very few people know how hard they had to work to get to this level. I know because my children are swimmers

Filip Velkov Heart attacks can happen to anyone, especially people who are pushing their bodies to the limit. 2008 Olympics saw a swimmer from a landlocked African country compete who barely made it to the end of a length! #OlympicLifeguardAndProud :P

While that's true, Olympic swimmers have the strong hearts. That sounds corny. They push themselves to the limits in practice... God knows what they do there. But when Olympic races come they rest, their heart that's passed thousands of kilometers of swimming is rested, and a mere 400 m with pacing yourself isn't gonna kill them. I know I've seen that race, that person barely knew how to swim xD

Maaz Khan notice the flags on top at the near-end of each walls; an indication that they have 2-3 more strokes before the flip turn

@@abradolflincler3257 Ahhhh I see. Thanks! I looked this up and got to know that these guys learn to count their strokes from a very young age for particular distances. That may also explain how they know where the wall is.

What determines the seeding or positioning during the heat? I know that in the final round, the seedings are based on the 8 fastest time during the heat. What about before the heat? Anyone?
