still trying to understand the rules of the game. can one hit over hand? tot the rules said one can only hit below the waist?

Except for the serve, which must effectively be underhand (it's complicated), you can do anything you like but hit a volley if you step into the paint (kitchen) before, during, or after the shot.

You can smash the ball as long as you (or anything touching you) is not touching the kitchen and the entire kitchen line. If you fall into kitchen because of the momentum of your swing, it is a fault. Check this video out to learn about all the details: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rq2Wf7t1ueCuk58.html
