William is an ex-drinker and author, he joins Dan in this episode to talk about his first book, Alcohol Explained, a no-nonsense and practical explanation of alcohol; what it is, what it does and why we drink. As well as William’s book, Dan and William discuss their journeys to sobriety, their experiences of drinking and anxiety as well as the mindset of someone who is alcohol dependent.

The greatest "menace to sobriety", is focusing on "quitting drinking". How do I know? I tried to "quit drinking" hundreds of times, and failed every time. (Some periods of being dry were longer than others, but eventually I drank again.) Fast forward to the moment I had always hoped for...the end of my physical, emotional, and mental endurance. I simply could no longer live with the guy in the mirror! THAT is the moment my recovery began. Something inside of me shifted to the stark realization that if I didn't change ME, I was totally phucked! Where to begin fixing a broken person? Certainly NOT with a broken mind, body, and spirit. I had to take myself out of the drivers seat, and get in the back. That was almost 30 years ago, and my life has never been better. My mantra is, "Live in the problem, or live in the solution". Sobriety is as simple as that! Peace!...Mark 5/8/1994

It was brilliant listening to two knowledgeable young men talk about the problems of alcohol. I’m 72 and recently was confronted with the prospect of death due to heart failure. I promised myself that I’d do nothing and quietly continue with my alcohol consumption and slip away in death one night. My youngest daughter, a professional woman of 32, asked me about my swollen ankles, a bi-product of heart failure. I explained the cause of the problem and she burst into tears saying that she didn’t want me to die. I was a bit cross with her at the time and gruffly explained that the time of my death is not controlled by me. On reflection I realised that this was not the entire truth. As a result of her intervention I went to the doctor and was diagnosed with heart failure and was referred to Harefield Hospital for further investigation. I abandoned alcohol at the point of my daughter’s tears. I’ve been drinking since I was 14 years old, and giving up is not as tough as I thought it would be. Knowing that another human being would be adversely affected by my demise made me realise how selfish I was being and brought me to my senses. I need encouragement and I’m delighted to say that this video provides it in spades. Thanks again to both participants, it’s always helpful for a stupid old man like me to hear insightful and inspiring talk. Best wishes to everyone following the path of abandoning alcohol. It isn’t always easy. 😂😂😂

@@patrickwalker-nolan7617 you are NOT a "stupid old man!". Back when you started drinking it really was more the norm than not & the health impacts of alcohol were not as well known as they are today. Give yourself a break. Your comment shows tremendous courage & insight. I take my hat off to you & hope you are still with us & doing well. ❤

Push through the socialising without drinking thing: it’s worth it. Find a friend who doesn’t drink; go cycling or take up an old sport you used to enjoy, but dropped. Find a non alcoholic drink you can tolerate (there are so many more recently, and they’re getting better). Learn a challenging new skill: piano playing, wood turning, whatever. Use family get togethers and other social events to have meaningful conversations, ask your parents about their childhoods before it’s too late, dance silly with your nieces. Theatre, cinema, quiz nights, race meetings, bowling games my husband does them all and can talk about them sensibly later because he doesn’t drink. Finally, thank your lucky stars your wife is still around, then thank her.

hey Dan, just in from a gig & put this on the TV. Loved it, such a different take on previous guests. I would love you to interview a 'small' time person in the night-time entertainment circuit who feels booze helps them connect with the audience better? For example, I am a 'nothing special' successful singer who's worked in Spain for 15 years+, working 6 nights a week, & maybe drink 3 or 4 pints during a 2hr gig with no problem at all. I know from my audience vibe, my connection feels more natural, banter flows easier & I'll pick up on things on things that can be used as material which I maybe wouldn't pick up on if I was sober as a judge. Also as a bonus, I feel I enjoy it 'more so' myself than letting it turn into groundhog day & go to work, to just pay the bills . I'll still get up tomorrow, go for for a 6K run, do weights & go about my day & get ready for the next nights gig. Is this the norm in our industry? I would love answers, if only to know Im not being self-indulgent & understand if other entertainers experience this? Keep up the good work! At least we don't have to work as hard as @ChasaRealTalk 😂

The socialising bit was interesting, I’ve had the same thing happen to me. Going out sober is awful, trying to talk to drunk people is like getting blood from a stone. When I drank I used to binge drink just to get through the event. Most of the events I went to that involved binge drinking were shit. What nobody really tells you is that when you get sober your social life might suffer a bit, unless you can go out sober and act drunk

Really enjoying the podcast Dan and big respect making this life decision, takes some serious balls. It's amazing to see someone that I can relate to and who had a similar relationship with drugs and alcohol speaking so openly about their sober journey. At the end of April, I have done a year without drinking and it has flown by. Honestly, never thought I would be in this position. I would always be the one blacking out and acting like an idiot, but it turns out we do have the power to change. One thing I would say going forward, I would recommend trying to read/listen to more of the guests books before they come on. I think it would take this podcast to the next level. Loving the content mate. I can only imagine that not drinking will get easier as we go.

The problem with alcohol is that it's all fun and games for years until it creeps up on you and you find it's not fun anymore. It has crept up on you slowly. You can't quite believe you have a drink problem because society tells us that alcoholics are those that, on waking in the morning, have to have a drink. Therefore we believe that we are not like them. However, we are. Just in a myriad of different ways.

"Everyone drinks more as time goes by / 4:14" I would disagree with that statement; the rest - is very interesting stuff. Problematic drinkers drink more as time goes by, but that's not the 90% of society who drink; the actual data shows, as you would expect, people drink more in their 20s & early 30s, the "party years" and then rapidly reduce their alcohol intake as they enter their late 30s - 40s the "having a family/ having a career" years, their environment changes, and societies expectations on them changes, and that in turn moderates their behaviour. When he was talking about drinking cider as a solution to feeling scared about going to war, using alcohol as some tool, "feeling stressed - reaching for a drink" thought process, that's something that has to be unlearnt in recovery, and he's spot on; people who don't have an issue with alcohol, never really make that mental connection that booze is some crutch, because once you do, it's medicine & you're on the road to addiction.

Fuck me, 19 minutes in and you nailed me to a T - I suffer with panic attacks & cant leave the house now unless I have a drink. I had my first panic attack after doing a "bucket" of hash when I was 14, over the next couple of years those attacks worsened. I found alcohol helped massively, but I was never socially anxious or afraid of every day things at that point. Fast forward 30 years, thankfully I work from home (although not being able to leave the house without having a drink didnt start until working from home about 10 years ago) & I have a wife and 2 children. Im lucky if I can make it from Monday to Thursday without drinking (50/ 50 chance of it happening) but on the occasions where that does happen Friday Saturday and Sunday are me drinking at least 3 bottles of red sometimes 4 each day, We spend the days going out, but the next day Im lucky if I can remember the day in its entirety & the following mornings im in bed with a bottle of wine & the fan going to keep me cool. Mondays are just terrible panic attacks, general anxiety, rarely do I even get up and as for work... not happening, cant eat because that sets off the panic barley drink any fluids, tuesdays have become harder recently I presume thats an age thing, but generally by Wednesday/ Thursday im feeling better and littlle bit like me again- but the kicker having to repeat the process just so we get out with out kids and try and give them some sort of normality, swimming, theme parks, walk with the dog, beach days, visiting family etc . This has been going on for so long (10+ years) about 8 weeks ago I contacted my GP (AGAIN) for help.. They are aware of my situation but their default is me taking medication but with talking theropies, and my needing to reduce my alcohol intake (becomes a chicken and egg scenario) and although I desperately want to change and stop this destructive cycle taking medication means anxiety and panic attacks because thats just a real fear for me after all the drugs coke, Es, billy etc I took in my teens. Im desperate for help I truly am but it just seems this life is not going to allow me to get it. I dont know, just tired of battling all this now I suppose. Anyway, appreciate the show and people taking the time to come on and share their own stories. Thanks, Mike in sunny Somerset, UK.

I like the series so far. However, I'd like to see more shows and more normal men, not just authors or celebrities.

I do love the guests so far, though, and as I am going through my own journey of sobriety at the moment, listening to the guests' speak really does help.
