Mendelssohn's respect for and love of J.S. Bach is on full display here. The old master would have been so proud of this work.

My thoughts exactly. There is the structure of Bach especially in the fugues.

Mendelssohn, gracias in excelsis!!! Mendelssohn's reverence for Bach's work is so very evident, though he has enlarged on it. What wonderful works these are. .I keep coming back to them. Thank you M-C Girot. I'd also like to hear Yunchan Lim's version of these if he ever plays them, because he interprets fugue-form, Mendelssohn and Bach extremely well.

Mendelssohn is the most eternal underrated composer of all times...and he's one the greatest ones, on the same level as Brah,s. Schumman, Beethoven or Chopin. Just listen to his 3rd (the Scottish) and 4th (the Italian) symphonies !

I am 80 as well, and have just found a volume including these pieces in my loft and have just finished playing through them, but at about one third of the speed in this recording. Not sure when and where I acquired the book, but it was given as a 2nd prize to someone in November 1877.

I had this on a CD, and then the CD got damaged, and I never was able to get it replaced. So wonderful to find it on KZfaq. I just haven't heard anyone who interpreted this music with such conviction and with such profound understanding of the ebb and flow of this music. She has an almost architectural sense of the music, and even in the fast music, she gives the music a beautiful flexibility with the give and take of her rubato. And though it might sound sexist, I feel that women have an innate understanding of music and the flow of melody that few men can ever match. My favorite pianists and singers have all been women.

I don’t hear the quotation, but Mendelsohn also has an Ace Maria quotation in the Variations Serieuses. He must have liked that melody.

Hands down, the best performace of this piece. It is also one of the most loyal to the score since all the other pianist make horrible fake notes ( i'm looking at you Murray Perahia).

M. Perahia..."false notes" ?! You really must have no idea of music reading or else you haven't read the scores. I've the scores of all these, in particular the prelude and fugue in E minor, and he's unbelievable accurate. Listen carefully...and READ the music.
