In Russia nobody says about Stephen Hough. But such musicians who can combine such amazing emotional qualities with an ingenious sense of proportion we haven't. In my personal opinion, Mr. Hough is the best pianist of the 21st century, the play of which I have ever enjoyed. I apologise for my language, if I wrote something wrong.

I totally agree with your comment. He is a total artist. Not only pianist, he also is composer, author, and painter. Because of that, his sound quality is somewhat extraordinary. His performance of Rachmaninov's Raphsody on a Theme of Paganini was superb.

Иван Бессонов, например, есть и совсем молоденькая Александра Довгань выступающая с концертами по всему миру. В 13 лет 1-й концерт Мендельсона. Может они недостаточно велики? Есть вообще критерий великости?

The piano sounded unusually clear to me so I looked it up and found it to be a new straight strung design. Considering I knew nothing about this innovation, and considering I was motivated to look into it just from its sound, I'm thinking there might be something good in it. I wonder how Stephen H found it to play.

'It's probably not surprising that Stephen Hough has to prove that he's so perfectly tuned to these pieces. If you only choose to record one song, this would be a great first choice... '[Hough] runs at its best, and capable of incorporating jolly whims without disturbing the flow of thought, this performance... boasts an almost idealistic lightness, vibrancy and impact... I've listened to Mendelssohn's Piano Concerto no 1 by a few performers, mostly by Alexandra Govdan... I will always dearly love her version and the deftness and energy displayed by the Sinfonica de Galicia. However, even after listening to the concerto probably a hundred times in recent weeks, Maestro Hough's playing easily passed the "made me cry" test! Like a baby, I was! Masterly! Bravo!

Since when is choice of tempo anything else then taste? "Understanding of Mendelssohn" is not tempo related. Besides that, this tempo seems highly appropriate, especially since the marking is Presto (which is around 172 quarter notes a minute).
