gosh, you made this flute sound so elegant and resonant. this company should pay you for promotion. but i think Mendini would get so many complains from customers about why they can't make a sound like you in this video. but still appreciate that you wanna show the price of flute shouldn't be an obstacle for a flute learner. :)

I picked up a Lazarro flute which appears to be in the same category as the two reviewed here and got similar results: 1. Definitely needed adjustments to make it playable. 2. Once adjusted, honestly it was very playable. 3. The nickel silver seems to be either finicky or inconsistent, as parts of the instrument tarnished extremely quickly while other parts with direct skin contact stayed intact. 4. I never completely adjusted the split-E mechanism due to needing to add more padding between the metal pads, but it's so close it doesn't matter in practice. Overall it seems that these

It's incredibly helpful to know what I'm getting myself into by buying a flute. I don't really have any experience with one aside from some ages ago back in middle school, and very much not the same instrument as a closed-hole flute. I'm more a composer, but I really want to learn an instrument or two so I have a chance to bring some more life to my pieces, given a lot of my work is with sampled plugins and the like. The information helps! You deserve a bigger following for stuff like this, helping folks on a tight budget like myself. Thanks a bunch!

Thank you for reviewing this for us. What an amazing artist you are. I'm an older adult, and have managed to learn the Alto recorder fairly well. I dn't do so good w/ written notes, but can repeat almost any melody someone sings to me. Not all, but most. I've been playing the dang thing for 7 yrs now, and I just find it squeeky. especially if I'm playing outside or with a bunch of other people and I have to be loud. So, I'm looking at learning the flute for it's softer sound. Will try the glory flute first, thanks to your review.
@LanceSuzuki
@LanceSuzuki Жыл бұрын
When playing with others, playing softly is a good skill to have. However, when practicing, it is important to let loose and make a full sound. When your full sound is consistent, you can learn to manipulate it to play more quietly in a healthy and sustainable way. Happy practicing!

So far the Mendini seems good with better quality than Glory model. The case and stand are very nice for the price. I, also, think the tones were more even than the Glory and especially liked the consistent tone at the top. In the 1970's I learned/played in sixth and seventh grade with wonderful and talented teachers. When I began touring with my artist family I took my flute with me and enjoyed playing but only occasionally. Sadly, through the years, my flute sunk below the sands of adult responsibility, it became unplayable. O, flute where art thou? THANK YOU LANCE FOR GIVING US DIRECTION AND HOPE. The Glory and Mendini reviews were a real pleasure to view and I plan to buy the Mendini. Your playing was sweet and expressive, a delight to listen to. I love your vibrato. The joy of achieving your goals shines from your face and tones. Note: I met Rampal at Saratoga Springs (Rampal and Claude Bolling concert, Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano pieces, WOW!) and to my surprise his question was how I was doing in my flute progress. I never imagined he would care and it blesses me every time I think of it. He was glad to sign my album and sincerely wished me well. He will be missed!!

Thank you for making these videos! I'm an adult now and looking for an inexpensive option to start playing again in a community band. The only flute I own is my student flute from 6th grade (which is far longer ago than I would like to admit) and she's taken a beating over the years (I was not kind or gentle in middle/high school. I sincerely wish I could take that back). I'm just trying to find something affordable that I could play around with. These videos are really helping me with my research!!

Hi Lance! Thanks so much for your videos. I got a very similar cheap flute off Amazon (says it’s a different manufacturer but I am suspicious) and have been playing again for about 6 weeks. After watching your b flat video I found that my sound quality improved dramatically when I started using the bflat key. BUT then I noticed that the rest of the notes had obviously different sound qualities depending on if I’m using the bflat key or not. Additionally, the C5 and C5# sounds…”hollow” is the only word I can think of for it. The C6 and C6# do too, but it’s not quite as noticeable. Is this most likely to be primarily a “cheap flute” problem (based on your experience of this very similar flute), a “needs adjustment” problem, or are there tips and tricks for making the “C” sound less hollow and my Google fu has failed me? Thanks so much!!

I think for the price, it's worth paying extra for a professional setup and adjustment. Even at twice the original purchase price by the time it's all said and done, you'll have a very good playing and functional instrument that should last a pretty good while, that sounds and feels way more expensive than it actually is.

I taught myself a few instruments but i only play by ear. I can not read sheet music lol. Hopefully I will figure this flute out. I can manage to get sound out of the headjoint. not so much once the entire flute is assembled. But it has only been 2 days. So this is my new challenge....at 38 yrs old haha. Maybe one day I will post a video if I do figure out how to play a song lol.

Thank you! I ended getting the Glory open hole with B foot because it’s what I played years ago. It came with hole plugs, but I couldn’t stand them and took them out. Did you compare the lengths of the main body of the flutes. My Glory ended up being about .5” shorter than my old flute. The key positioning was not affected, it just shortened the barrel a bit. I am 68 years old picking up the flute again after 20 years. I had extensive dental work done and was so disappointed in my embouchure I put it down. Now that my kids are all grown up and I’m retired, I have the urge to work at rebuilding some of my skills. Unfortunately, my old silver flute needs work before it will be playable again...anywhere from $500 to $800 dollars. Before I invest that much, I want to see how successful I can be in playing for enjoyment with a decent tone and agility. Muscle memory makes fingering easier to get beck, but embouchure is another thing altogether. The Glory was $165 which I was willing to fork over for the open holes, silver plating and B-foot. But now I’m wondering if I should return it for a similar Mendini because of the tone.

You are a very honest and neutral person. I have experienced similar situations with saxophones which are, in my humble opinion, more complicated to build than flutes are. I play cheap Tenor and Soprano saxophones and one metal clarinet (from China) but I do play them well. I have played in Jazz bands, in Orchestra and in small ensembles since more than 20 years. Such saxophones have to be looked after all the time, which I do myself. And then thy play well. I once went to see an instrument maker who refused to repair such a cheap crap. Then I learned to do it myself. In the end I found another instrument maker whom I can ask when things get too difficult. Why should I pay 3500-5000 Euros for an instrument when I can get it from China for 300 Euros? So I think it will be the same situation with flutes. As long as the mechanical parts are doing well the flute will probably play to whatever sound the mouthpiece renders.
@LanceSuzuki
@LanceSuzuki 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! I try to remain as honest as possible with these flutes and keep my playing as neutral as possible to let the qualities of the instruments come out. My primary flute is, of course, much more expensive than these ones. However, I really do see the value of these cheap instruments for those who are just starting out or can't afford more. Thanks for watching!

Again thank you for a great video. Right away I could tell the Mendini's sound quality was way better, but when you shared how much adjusting you had done, I thought that leaves me out of the game, which is a drag. If when first receiving it no maintenane or adjustments were needed at least for say six months that would be fine, but to receive it and it not sound right unless adjusted is a significant consideration. Too bad because like I said it sounded great. Maybe I will check my local music tech for the cost of adjustment before purchase.

Nice review. Something buyers may consider is where to have repaired because many reputable repair techs tend to avoid this economy flute as these type of flutes rarely stay in adjustment and parts are not available esp. screws. These off brands can damage the reputation techs prize and may not be guaranteed to be fixable.

I know NOTHING about flutes. This Oct 2022. My daughter is 13 yrs old in 8th grade. I am watching your video because when she was starting 4th grade I was unaware she was supposed to get an instrument. We agreed that the flute might be better for her than a clarinet after multiple KZfaq videos. Renting one (option to buy) for a kid that was not going to last (per my previous experiences with her)… better but something that might rise her interest… a flute with COLOR!!! YOU CAN LAUGH!!!😂🤣 So, i went to Google… searched cheap but “good” and PRETTY!!! So, I got her to agree that she can use a BLUE ONE!!! After all she was not going to last a lot and worst case I can always buy a new flute on AMAZON!!! Long story, short…She takes care and love her blue thing… I don’t think that she will be a musician, we move 2 times, she made sure that thing is OK. Like 4 Band teachers… she fight to stay on the band… and her only complain has been that the zipper broke so she need a new bag or fix the old one. I REPEAT I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT FLUTES. If I buy a new flute maybe I will jinx her band time.🤣😂🤣😂

Hi, I was wondering whether there would be leaks on the flute? I have seen multiple reviews on this flute saying that it has a pretty bad quality and it is impossible to play. Thanks!

I can't speak to others' experiences, only to the flute I received. Mine was definitely playable out of the box. There were some small leaks (which are to be expected) and I was able to improve those pretty easily.

That's a hard question to answer as repair prices can vary from technician to technician and depending on what part of the country/world you are in. I would estimate anywhere from $50-100+/hour. What I did was incredibly simple and took me about 5 minutes to do.

My first flute I got in a used condition from eBay, and almost all repair shops actually refused to do any maintenance or repairs on it. ^^“ As an adult beginner I wanted to know if the instrument would be for me, so the Amazon varieties probably would have been a better option. I am currently playing a Jupiter flute that cost about 499 EUR, though I am renting it for 20 EUR a month while automatically buying it in time. Is there a specific time period in which you should show your instrument to a professional to get it adjusted? I‘ve been playing my flute for about 1.5 years now, but I cannot tell if there should be any adjustments made.

Most flutists including myself try to get a COA (service) once every 12 months, although that doesn't always happen for me. Because you're renting to buy, I'd contact the place to see if they can service it. I always notice a huge difference after a service.

Lance, If we are able to get a used Student Bundy or Gemeinhardt for the same price as the cheap Amazon one, which is preferred? They say the Bundy and Gemeinhardt 2SP are in "Good" condition. Are used, older branded ones better than new cheaper ones? Thank you.
@kaandis7457

It really all comes down to the make of the flute. How well it is made determines how long it will last and how well it performs. Other used reputable brands will likely last longer than very cheaply made products like Mendini flutes. An older model may need repairs, but if found in good condition, it will likely last longer after repairs than a cheap Amazon flute would. Sorry the explanation isn’t more in depth, I’m not an expert. Also, it really does depend on the brand and such. Maybe a used Yamaha would be really good! Happily fluting!

Hello, I am very surprised about the quality and purity of the tones that come out of this cheap flute, but I also know that these beautiful tones don't come from the flute itself because a flute can't do anything by itself. It takes a good flute player and it will be because even a bad flute can sound beautiful or not, although this was most certainly not a bad flute, just cheap, although a bad flute can be sold dearly just because it is beautiful . I prefer a less beautiful flute because it sounds beautiful. My compliments to this man, a very beautiful flute player, beautiful in character and beautiful in skill. Thank you.

This was extremely helpful! Looking to buy a new flute. I own a Geimenhart(can never remember how to spell that!) and I’m trying to decide whether to get it repaired or just purchase a new flute out right! have played for Band/ pep band and church... in my area, it costs $50 for an estimate on “possible” repairs needed! This $50 is also a deductible towards repairs, if you do decide to go that route! Do not know if that is a good deal or not! ????; Especially if I can buy a Mendini for under $100! Advice???
@LanceSuzuki
@LanceSuzuki 3 жыл бұрын
I think it depends on what model Gemeinhardt you have and how much silver is in it. $50 for estimate is steep (I've never heard of an estimate charge before). Mendini is a fine choice for pep band and outdoor playing. However, keep in mind that it will eventually need repair as well, so buying a new one would only be a temporary solution. You will always end up in the repair shop at some point. It is hard for me to tell without seeing the flute, but if you have things like torn pads/mechanism problems, you will be looking at a more expensive repair. I hope that helps a little!

I see that the Mendini flute is made by the Cecilio Company in Rancho Cucamonga, CA, but who makes the Glory flute? If a top notch flute maker were to finish them to the highest standards - including more work on the embouchure hole - do you think that they'd sound as good as the most expensive flutes? I don't see why not, since I don't believe it's been proven that material makes a difference in tone quality.
@LanceSuzuki
@LanceSuzuki 3 жыл бұрын
I think the Mendini is probably still manufactured in China. However, it is finished in CA. I'd bet that Glory is made in China as well. The metal composition definitely makes a difference. It's hard to describe, but mainly affects tone quality and the response to your air. For example, people can tell the difference if you just change the metal of the riser (the small chimney that connects the lip plate to the tube). With more expensive flutes, you are also getting more handmade elements and more sophisticated mechanism. All that being said, you can still get a very decent sound from these cheaper flutes and, depending on your needs, they may be the perfect solution.

Lance - I must admit that I'm a bit disappointed in this vid... You go from unboxing to wonderfully balanced, resonant and solid intonation without ever discussing your tuning process.. haha. I would be keenly interested and appreciative if perhaps you made a vid dedicated to your methods of tuning a flute... even micro-tuning... to find the sweet spot. What steps did you go through to find the perfect center to your 24K flute? What is your preferred tuning note? Do you tune using harmonics, an array? Very curious.
@LanceSuzuki
@LanceSuzuki 3 жыл бұрын
This is a great question and very deserving of a future video! Long story short, I am not sweating it too much. I think that (especially these days) flutes are made to play mostly in tune. Our job as players is to make them resonate in the most efficient way. Perfect example...even this cheap flute can sound pretty good and play decently in tune if it is well resonated. When the flute is not resonating well, it can lead to a lot of intonation problems. When I play with others, we usually tune to A. I always use the low A as well as a couple other notes (D, E usually) to get my bearings. Then I get ready to be flexible because that is the most important part of playing in tune with others. Does that help a little?
@TwainsBlues
@TwainsBlues 3 жыл бұрын
@@LanceSuzuki Every little bit helps, Lance.. Thx for responding. I'm self taught so I missed a lot of the basics. I played sax professionally for 30 years and after some health issues switched to flute exclusively about 15 years ago... It's the variables on the flute that are tricky... Sax - you work with a tuner, find the sweet spot for the mouthpiece and take it from there. With the flute the variables - not just pushing in or pulling out, but rotating the HJ, the wind speed, attack, support, the overtones... all remarkably flexible... a lot of weight on the player... since 90% of what I do is improv, I'm not always prepared for the nuanced adjustments.. like having strong air support at the end of a phrase and needing then a firm embouchure to keep the note up... Tuning and playing in tune is an infinite subject for me... You have extremely good pitch and a full resonant tone... enjoy listening to you...

The Mendini definitely takes more effort to play than my pro-level flute. However, it depends on what you are playing. If the music isn't too hard, I can get by on the cheap flute. When things get more complicated/faster, my good flute literally is a well-oiled machine and there is no substitute.
