Following on from the Newquay branch, whilst down in Cornwall and Devon, I paid a visit to Dockyard station, which definitely IS a request stop ... and Menheniot, which is? Or isn't it? It certainly once used to be! But i don't think it is anymore, let's go and find out ...

Living under the railway bridge as you depart westbound from Dockyard Station you really don't notice the trains after a while. I live in Saint-Petersburg, and even though we have a "request stop" thing on our suburban railway, drivers usually ignore that and stopping at that station regardless if the requested, because it's a freaking lottery to know if someone requested it or not, and if you miss a request punishment is pretty noticeable in the month paycheck... (At least they do that at summer, at winter they indeed might be fully request stops) We also have one train that don't have exact time in it's schedule for a certain stop, it just says "train departure time not scheduled" in the timetable, though it's not that scary cause departure time for previous stop is stated

Hello Geoff. I love Brunel's Albert Bridge. In 2007, I had been on holiday in Newquay, and used the train to get there (rude not to, considering the line), and, as I was returning home, my brother, who had gone home a day earlier, phoned me from our local pub, where he was helping with a pub quiz. The conversation went like this: BROTHER: What is the name of that Brunel bridge between Devon and Cornwall? ME: What, the one I'm going over at this exact minute? Perfect timing.

When I was at school I spent a couple of years commuting from Dockyard Halt (as it then was) to and from Plymouth. It wasn't a request stop then, mind. I have a season ticket issued in 1966 which was on Great Western Railway ticket stock and was valid in 'First Class or Rail Motor Car'. I am told that it was the last GWR ticket issued at Plymouth, as when it was issued somebody on high noticed and the stock was withdrawn. I had a friend in the Travel Centre at Plymouth who had alerted me to the existance of the ticket, so for the one term I upgraded to First. Glad you were able to experience some Cornish summer weather though, we do like to look after our visitors!

Hi Geoff, greetings from NZ. I'm an expat from Plymouth and emigrated with my family to NZ when I was 8 years old. Thanks for covering Dockyard. I used to come here with my dad back in the 80's to watch the HST's going to and from Cornwall. (we used to live about 5 mins down the road) Nothing much has changed, except for it used to be called 'Dockyard Halt'. Just further east of Dockyard there used to be a beautiful stone viaduct that used to carry the Southern Railway to London via Tavistock. The line was closed in the 60's (Beeching) and they demolished the viaduct late 86, early 87 which was a shame. If you head down Pasley St you can still see the remains of the cutting heading into the tunnel, but its mostly filled with rubbish now.

A life time ago, when in the actual dockyard, and commanding a red devil ( bicycle ) every effort had to be made to avoid the rail tracks inside the dockyard, once the red devils wheels were in them, only one very painful event would result, and a bollocking for any damage resulting, to the bike.

One of the most bizarre routes I’ve taken down the West county is Liskeard to Looe. Leaving Liskeard you go down and dead end track, driver swaps end and as the train goes back it takes a right turn round a loop that then heads South to Looe. All done in reverse to return to Liskeard. No direct route to Looe.

I think it was to do with the introduction of the 2+4 sets on stopping services and it was decided that request stops werent a good idea due to the braking characteristics of the trains so 'Mainline' request stops were normalised, then a couple of 2+4 services started to call at Dockyard which remains a request stop for the moment, I understand this will be normalised at some stage as well.

Dockyard is technically a request stop but in practical terms it isn't. We really made use of Dockyard Station during Pub Exploring because there's a train into Plymouth a couple of minutes past 11pm so when they ring for last orders at the Herbert, you know to go for the train. I also have a friend who lives in that area so I used to get the train from Saltash to Dockyard, and the journey is quicker and cheaper than the bus. You don't need to request it. The train always stops there. Maybe if it was late at night and the train was empty, they'd play the "request stop" card, but other than that it will usually stop. It's just easier that way. Not all trains stop only on request, some have it as a mandatory stop and those are usually the ones serving the Dockyard workers who use the station, as indeed I did when I went to Goschen College. The station is actually super convenient to use, you've just got to time it right.

Short formed HSTs (255 Castle class) are not permitted to perform the request stop procedure. I'm guessing that because there are so many of this traction operating on the route to Penzance they decided to omit Menheniot from the list of request stops.

The Cornwall Main line was Single track until 1932-3. Cantonment (non token signalling) was made illegal after a collision of trains between Menheniot and St Germans since a train proceeded due to a misunderstanding between a train driver and station staff. I think this happened in 1873 but may be wrong

The practice of 19th century railroads to bypass the center of villages to save money has now come back to haunt them. If you need a car to go to the station, you can use the car to go direct to your destination rather then using the train. Brunell of course always preferred the flattest route for his lines, so this may be the reason as well. Either way, it has led to people giving up trains for private cars.
