We have always worn our musical influences on our sleeve, and done so with pride, both in our original tunes and in our choice of cover songs. Always pointing at the giants on whose shoulders we stand, as if trying to zoom out of the shot, to capture the bigger picture, not just a selfie. This cover here - Kirsty MacColl's They Don't Know - is no exception. In our book, Kirsty was, and always will be, the queen of songwriters, ruling many a genre. No one sang like her, in a dozen voices. No one was sassier, and no one softer. And sadly no one had a more tragic ending. 20 years after her untimely death, we HAD TO cover a tune of hers. We chose her crown jewel, one of those ‘best songs ever’, a tune that refines that feeling of ‘us against the world’, and of course, somehow, manages to transcend it. The perfect pop song. We’ve MONCed it up a bit with our 12-string and horns, but hopefully didn’t stray too far.
