I am delighted to see more attention paid every month to issues regarding menopause and perimenopause, with articles popping up in every magazine and newspaper, often with celebrities talking about their experiences. We're finally starting to have a voice in the world about this critical time in life. While this is a fantastic development, one of the dark sides is that it has opened up a market for companies to sell products that claim to help with menopause symptoms, but have no scientific backing.
This is particularly worrisome because it preys on women in a very vulnerable time in life who may be experiencing truly devastating symptoms that have serious future health ramifications.
Marketing products that are not proven to be helpful, is not only unethical, but is harming women. Today I'm talking about the business of supplements sold to improve menopause symptoms, and discussing the fact that not one single supplement has any scientific backing to support the claims that menopause symptoms are reduced. In the meantime, bioidentical hormone replacement has been rigorously studied and shown not only to be safe, but to have very important health benefits that should not be ignored because of unfounded fears.
Each of us can make her own decision but today I'm inviting you to think and be smart, and not let people pray on our vulnerability, or assume that we are not smart enough to understand scientific studies. While the ingredients in many menopause symptoms products are very good for numerous things, none of them has been shown to help with the symptoms of menopause.
This is an invitation to be very careful and not to believe everything that you are told by celebrities who are being paid to deliver a message that is potentially harmful.

@@Karikk72 yes that level is extremely sub optimal. It may take away meno symptoms but it is definitely not a level that is doing much for your brain, bones, etc. Dr Felice Gersh says she likes to see estradiol levels around 100, however I have also heard from other experts such as Mary Claire Haver that levels between 50-80 are optimal. If your levels are less than 5 right now you definitely would benefit from increasing that estradiol !!!!!

It’s so sad. Women (including me) are desperate for relief. I’ve tried almost all the supplements on the market with NO help! So expensive and just a waste. The only thing that has helped was my biote pellets. I’m so grateful I took the leap last year and did this. I’m a new lady now.

My OB-Gyn told me to take Bonafide - for 2 years actually. I had been telling her about my symptoms, especially the brain fog, and I was hesitant to take these supplements. My last visit with her she told me again to take the supplements. Well I tried them and broke out in hives a couple days in. I reached out to Bonafide and they said that sometimes patients who take Synthroid have a reaction to some of their ingredients. I was shocked! My doctor knows what meds I take and still recommended this supplement.

Though I really do like listening to you and have learned a lot I do feel you’re being pretty tough on supplements saying they aren’t FDA approved. To me FDA approval doesn’t mean a whole lot these days. I mean the FDA won’t even approve Testosterone for women even though as you know we need it and you promote people taking it. Unfortunately, many doctors just don’t have training in nutrients and vitamins because they aren’t taught and they also get more money by pushing pharmaceutical drugs so…everyone needs to do their own homework and advocate for what is best for them because unfortunately doctors aren’t always right or can’t open their mind to natural care instead of pharmaceuticals.

Thank you for expressing this point, which resonates so deeply and is undeniably true. Over the last few years, many people have lost faith in the allopathic medical system, which is quickly being exposed for its true purpose-masking symptoms rather than focusing on prevention. Nutritional supplements, on the other hand, don't just address the symptoms; they also tackle the root causes. While they may not provide immediate relief, over time, their consistent use leads to a significant alleviation of symptoms. I've noticed that many traditional doctors have recently started to counter the approaches of alternative practitioners, as if they feel threatened by the growing awareness of the failing allopathic medical system-often seen as the Rockefeller-funded medical mafia that promotes illness, toxins, and massive profits. The last few years, especially during the plandemic with convid, have shown us the injustices done to personal liberties and the tragic loss of millions of lives due to the push for toxic jabs. The financial incentives and paybacks from Big Pharma and governments (literally "govern the mind") for getting people jabbed only underline the corruption. It's also apparent that some doctors, comfortable and confident on screen, have been encouraged to flood social media with a Western allopathic perspective that serves the oligarchs, though I’m not suggesting this particular doctor is doing so. Their system of merely treating symptoms with drugs that often have significant side effects is losing ground. The last several years have clearly demonstrated that trust in many of these systems, especially the medical one, is rapidly eroding. 💌

I live in Europe. Hormone therapy is not so available in my country. I take vaginal estrogen and herbal supplements. Both are very helpful. The herbal supplement helped me a lot. So don't discurage people who prefer this or have no other option, saying they definitely don't work. They definitely work for some.

Also, you didn't mention the actual supplements that help wuth menopause: black cohosh, soy, etc... I've never heard about chromium or berberine for this purpose.
@drsusan
@drsusan 3 ай бұрын
None of these things have been studied to work better than placebo in a reliable study. They may work for some - but don't have any of the very important health benefits of estradiol . My point is that taking something that is not proven to work better than placebo (which also works as I mentioned ) is preventing many women from getting real health benefits Everyone can choose - but no supplement in this class including black cohosh soy etc prevents heart disease, osteoporosis , colon cancer or Alzheimer's disease .

what about other cancers besides breast cancer? They r never mentioned.....
@drsusan
@drsusan 4 ай бұрын
I think they're not mentioned because they are not an issue. Hormone replacement causes a decrease in colon cancer, uterine cancer, and possibly breast cancer (with testosterone) and does not cause an increase in any cancers if given appropriately . While decreasing overall cancer risk, hormone replacement also reduces our risk of osteoporosis, Alzheimer's disease and heart disease. The reason why other cancers are rarely mentioned is exactly this:) The women's health initiative study raised tge question of breast cancer being an issue, but that question was answered, and the risk was shown to be unchanged, or possibly even decreased .

My GYN had me go off HRT when I turned 60. Is that an age to stop HRT? Or is it safe at any age. I was previously on HRT after my total hysterectomy at age 38 and discontinued at age 60
@drsusan
@drsusan 4 ай бұрын
While every patient's history is different most patients with normal health history can safely take hormone replacement throughout life. There is no reason to stop it at 60 as a rule. The risk of most diseases goes up in our 60s so that would be the worst time to stop it for most people!
