Half of my jackets are second-hand. Find the best quality high-end stuff for a fraction of the cost. A thrift store is a treasure trove of good and even vintage ties for a few dollars ( or like a pound). A lot of this stuff has never been worn. Unwanted gifts or impulse purchases that were eventually tossed usually with the sales tag intact. I just got a brand new Ralph Lauren blue blazer with the tags for $25!

I couldn't agree more - the vast majority of my wardrobe has been sourced at discount prices from ebay or other avenues. Shoes particularly are a great item to pick up on ebay. Great find on that new blazer - a lynchpin of any dapper chap's wardrobe!!

Great tops there. I've bought some fantastic Harris tweed second hand. I was after one in particular but it was close to £200 new but managed to buy one on EBAY for £40 and I found a brand new Charles Tyrwhitt silk tie for £1.30 stil with the tags attached. So for anyone out there feeling resistant Don't. There's bargains to be had

Brilliant advice Ash. I've amassed a wardrobe I'm really pleased with. And like your advice most of it came from pre owned sources. I too like the Loake brand from Northampton. And never pay more than £50 for a pair. I have a very talented tailor friend who has altered all my clothing items. Nothing is too much trouble for him. Shortening sleeves on jackets/coats. The length of trousers and adding turn ups, even re tailoring bespoke items from internet auctions. The best compliments I've had have always been when I'm wearing bespoke or tailored clothing. And most of which I paid very little for. Keep up the great content. 🙂

My great friend Jack sold mass produced cabinets to apartment builders nationwide. As it was all about cost the builders always emphasized “cheap”. Jack never sold “cheap”. He always sold “the popular priced”. He was the highest paid, and sought out, construction components sales person in history. He retired extremely very wealthy. “Cheap” is an entry level point of view. Real gentlemen know and appreciate “the popular priced” point of view.

About 75% of my current wardrobe was acquired by going the second-hand route, Ash, either through thrift shops, or online platforms like eBay. My favourite thrift shops support our local community hospital and are staffed by volunteers, and whenever I make a purchase at one of these places I tell myself that I'm supporting the local community, supporting Canadian socialized medicine, and doing my part to shrink my personal carbon footprint by reducing, reusing, and recycling. I found a brand new lamb's suede jacket at one of these places the other day. I was unfamiliar with the brand logo, but immediately discerned the quality of the piece, and plunked down my eight dollars Canadian for the item at the till. When I got home and researched the jacket, I realized I had bought an Armani suede jacket that retails for six thousand dollars Canadian. I tell people that shopping for men's clothing at thrift shops is like panning for gold: you've got to shift a lot of shale before something flashes in the pan, and even then, it may be only pyrite. But once in a while you will come across a genuine gold nugget -like that Armani jacket.

Ebay is the best place for me to acquire a few particular item of clothing, especially sports jackets and shoes! Buying suits or trousers can be disappointing as they need to be tried on first but shoes and jacket when you know the manufacturer are best options to purchase off ebay.

Great video Ash. Really are some good ideas there. Quite spooky when you mentioned the Loake shop as I have been wanting a nice pair of Loake Bedale brogue boots for some time and ventured into Loake in Salisbury. Tried on a pair and loved them. I cheekily asked if they come up in sales to be told the popular lines are always full price but you can get a 15% discount if military, police or NHS. My wife is in the NHS and they gave me the discount so I also purchased the shoe trees and mink oil with a discount of around £45 so a great buy for some boots that Should last a lifetime.

I used to follow my father's example and bought good quality clothes, and I am still wearing some that I have had for more than 50 years, but during the last 20 years, I have visited charity shops just to see what is available. On several occasions, I have seen hardly used top quality brands that enhance my image, and paid between 1% and 5% of the original price for them, and had the satisfaction of helping a good cause, and preventing good clothes being thrown away.

Anyway, I was recently gifted a plum-coloured sports coat and a pair of oxblood boots. Looks pretty snazzy with jeans and a maroon sweater, but what to wear on more formal occasions? Well, this morning I visited a charity shop and found a matching waistcoat and trousers in sage green for 10 Euros. Fine condition, perfect fit. I have shirts and ties that can bring all that together. It might sound a bit garish but hey, I'm an artist, so that combination will be ideal for my next professional engagement. Hello love your videos, I was wondering wether I should get a good quality bespoke suit for work or buy a suit off the rack of good quality material and take it to a tailors to get altered
@TheChapsGuide
@TheChapsGuide 3 жыл бұрын
Well.. there are a few answers to that question. Obviously a full bespoke suit would be the best and would surely display the ultimate version of you to the work - hiding any faults and highlighting the positives of your physique. However, the question of cost also has to be considered. A fine bespoke suit, from a top-end tailor (Gieves & Hawkes, Chittleborough & Morgan, Norton, etc.) will likely cost several thousand pounds (>£3K) so it is a sizable investment. On the other hand, this investment may catapult your career skyward and give you an injection of self confidence that will carry you forward to greatness. A non-bespoke suit will cost far less, but may be customisable by a tailor to the point it may look 90% as good as that bespoke suit, but cost only 25 - 30% of the final price. Additionally there are other options, such as made-to-measure, this being a lesser version of the full bespoke option. Or other bespoke options using foreign manufacturers (i.e. you are measured in the UK and the garments are created abroad - to take advantage of lower labour costs). If I were you, I would undertake a period of research to see if any styles take your eye, then visit a high-end tailor, such as Gieves & Hawkes in London (No 1 Saville Row) and discover what options are available. They will quote you for all options and then you will have an understanding of the costs and variety available to you. I envy you indeed - I have never been in a position to commission a bespoke garment as yet - I hope you find the option that suits you best. Ash
@ivancho5854
@ivancho5854 3 жыл бұрын
I suggest that you visit the tailor of your choice and ask for their advice before buying an off the rack suit. They will be able to tell you which alteration is least problematic, what is impossible and the costs associated with each type of modification. This will also serve to initiate your relationship and could also serve as a type of interview with the tailor. Best of luck.

Regarding the current situation, there are always 2 sides to the story. During these times you could and can still get bargains like never before. I have never seen reductions of that magnitude ever. I have even seen real panic sales that later were reversed because those stores came to their senses again but I was there at the right time and grabbed the stuff I wanted. A 6000 $ cashmere coat I got for 850. The next time I saw it the price went back up to 2000.

An under-valued item at thrift stores are women's scarfs. You will find polyester silk scarfs from Paris or Italy priced the same as a polyester one; being larger than a pocket square leaves you with a lot of fabric to work with. If you know one who sews your tailor tax could be free, otherwise a hem is simple for a tailor so should be on the low cost end to get done. Just make sure the pattern is more gender neutral. On stores: vintage stores will know what they have and price accordingly (or over priced), meanwhile charity shops will often price items the same regardless of fabric or country.
