It actually makes sense to factor in formal training and education, since familiarity with these topics can skew the results (e.g. if you have trained a specific kind of math problems, solving these problems won't be indicative of intelligence. But if you have not seen them before and come up with a good strategy, this might be a good sign). However, the way to properly adress this issue would be to pose a completely different test, not to adjust the score (After all, why should my IQ drop in the minute I get my degree?).

@@HiHello-dj8if " intelligence would be tied to brain structure". Trying to put intelligence in such a simple concept is doomed to fail. Just see how many words have been written (books, digitally, etc), since writing exist, about intelligence and realize that they still don't know what intelligence really is (psychology, artificial intelligence, etc). You will have as many "temporary" definitions as you want, but none is really accepted. They are just there so people have at least a minimal common (a working theory) terrain to talk about it. That should give some perspective about what the so called IQ tests are. They are just based on an unproven theory that some random guy came with and whish is still in fashion because there is still not even a minimally satisfying "scientific" theory about it a hundred years later. People are just suffering from a hundred years of cheap pseudo-scientific propaganda. Just another urban legend.

@@zactron1997 Yes, seems like they assume you're better at pattern recognition, logical thinking etc. because you are a mathematician, and thus want to "adapt" your measurements. But doesn't that claim IQ has a significant dynamic component? But at the same time IQ is defined as something static and only varying a few points randomly? Or are your interests determined by your "intrinsic" IQ, e.g. you like math, chess, puzzles (problem solving) because that's just the tendency for smarter people. But then they shouldn't adapt your results. On the other hand, if that wouldn't be the case, then it would show that their shitty IQ tests are learnable, i.e. not intrinsic.

Talent is just the name we give to skills whose development we can't explain, but all talents have a particular pattern of precedent events that lead to them, whether they are physiological, psychological, educational doesn't matter. Following from that,we can conclude that the ability to get a high score in a IQ test always has a precedent cause/factors that could be changed and therefore there is no reason to think your IQ score is a fundamentally fixed trait. Saying that your IQ is fixed and that the effects of math education on IQ score should be taken out of the final score is stupid because the same logic can be used to any factor that influences IQ score. "Since you weren't poisoned with lead, your real IQ is lower than x","Since you aren't illiterate, your real IQ is lower than x","Since you weren't dropped as a baby, you real IQ is lower than x","Since you were well nourished as a baby, you real IQ is lower than x","Since you grew up in a environment rich with information and stimulus for your development, your real IQ is lower than x","Since your frontal and parietal lobe are more volumous and integrated, your real IQ is lower than x","Since you've had a highly curious mind since your childhood, your real IQ is lower than x". I disagree. MENSA has nothing except the IQ score preventing ass holes to join. People tend to accommodate differences in IQ scores plus/minus 20 points. So if you are above 130. You can tolerate people with 110 points easily. But the median is 100 more than half the population of the people seem just so slow in thinking that it is hard to keep an conversation going. This world sucks the fun out of right at the beginning. For me it seems rather more benevolent to go to university and meet intelligent people there. But some people just don't have the opportunity so I think the social events MinD does for its members are actually nice and important for these people. People using it to boost their ego probably need it because they lack in so many other ways.

I think the point of asking about education level is so that they can, for example, adjust your score down if you've received more education. Which makes sense if you consider things like pattern recognition and general intelligence to be flexible. It's just ironic because their whole society is founded on precisely the opposite premise. But even if "intelligence" were fixed, the fact that I've spent far more time thinking about geometric and graph-theoretic problems than my siblings, who're all about as smart as I am, is going to give me an edge in certain kinds of problems. I presume that is the basis of an education condition.

I did poorly in my CS classes and my self-esteem was really tied to these types of tests, and a lot of my so-called friends would mock me for not understanding simple concepts. I kept doing these tests to convince myself that I was not stupid. Two years later and I am now one of the best in my class, I'm certainly not a great programmer or anything like that. But the point is that intrinsic measures of intelligence are stupid, the brain constantly changes itself, it can grow depending on your environment, and depending on your mindset. Psychometrics are complete bullshit. I remember watching your original video. You were surprised at the score and talked in general about the test. You didn't give away any details that could help people "cheat". I'm not a lawyer, but from my understanding of copyright law, your prior video could be considered "fair use" -- a discussion about the pros and cons of their testing methodology. Also, it sounds like you answered their questions honestly, and now -- after the fact -- they decide your answers resulted in false results. Because it seemed like you gave genuinely honest answers to the questions they asked, the problem seems to be (my humble opinion) they were not asking the right questions! That is THEIR fault, not yours. A royal shame they would try to reverse the blame! Finally, I agree with you: IQ scores are bogus. Even *if* they are the most objective way to measure intelligence, the result is EXTREMELY general and, by itself, is unable to (dis)qualify a person for a job / fellowship / etc.

As a student I was kind of pressured to do the Mensa test as well (and I did). Knowing what I know now about IQ tests: - it is not an accurate one, even in the range they name, there are more accurate ones out there - the kind of questions are basically exactly the same as on any other iq test and trainable if you wished to (so what is the fuzz about the nda) - alone the fact that my degree matters for the result shows how little it tells. What if I studied but never got the degree as an example. The whole idea behind Mensa is, frankly, ridiculous. Using an arbitrary number of a one day performance, to create an exclusive club of, sorry, vastly arrogant people. And no, I did not fail to reach the result for the invite, it's not envy speaking. I remember being in a room of children everybody comparing his numbers and bragging. That is such bad thing to happen, tbh.

Part3 In addition to the benefits determined by having a high IQ, we must also say that IQ is extremely important when we are new to a field or very young. According to recent studies, the effect of IQ is decisive for someone's performance only when we have few years of experience. But, among experts, there is no correlation between IQ and expertise. This is what emerged from a study of elite chess players. Among them, the ones possessing higher scores had lower IQ due to the higher amount of practice they have dedicated to the game of chess. IQ is essential at the very beginning to accelerate the learning process. But, as we make more and more practice in one field, the IQ differences lessen.

This problem is actually based on an intriguing and subtle disagreement in the academic community of psychologists and psychiatrists as to how to properly define intelligence as measured by IQ. See, in practise someone could have an IQ of say 128 as a teen, but after a degree in Mathematics, it could have jumped to 145 in a subsequent IQ test. It is true that, you'll perform better on the mathematics portion (which measures crystallised intelligence) but IF you also performed better on non-crystallised portions, then, yes your IQ is now 145. What happened during your Mathematics degree is that you've trained your brain to pick up on abstract patterns at a far greater depth which you've been somehow able to generalise to non-mathematical subjects, and that brain capacity remains with you after your Mathematics degree. HOWEVER, what bothers some psychologists/psychiatrists is how long this enhanced cognitive aptitude remains with you after your degree. You see, if you were born with 145 IQ, that's going to stay with you for life whether you like it or not. If you've acquired a 145 IQ from study, then they're currently unsure if that remains with you for life or only as you continuously study Mathematics. If you're a professor for life, then reducing an IQ score based on your studies is pointless even if IQ drops significantly for those who leave study, since your intelligence will remain for life, since you're always going to be studying to retain it to some degree. However, since many IQ testers want to measure something that is constant, fixed, and BY DEFINITION (not by fact) independent of education, they will reduce IQ scores so as to find your fixed inborn IQ. However, you can at least say, inasmuch as you've acquired and generalised enhanced cognitive abilities, your intelligence functions as though you have an IQ of 145, and that will remain with you for life as many studies show. So, Mensa wants to give you the IQ you're born with (since that is a fixed PAST fact), not the one your brain is currently functioning at.

They might have paid a psychometric analysis company to make their test. I've worked for one and they are fastidious. For example, if a coaching college got hold of our prototype questions (even one significant question) we would be able to tell from the small spike in scores clustered around it geographically after we analyze the bona fide test scores. If they reused the test they might have seen a spike in scores from people who got hints from your video but it's very unlikely. However, my guess is that's what they are guarding; the integrity of the test.
