The E Type is a great classic, no argument, but what if it was faster and handled better? Thats what Lion and Fox thought when they found a rotten V12 Series 3, fixed it and added their own fuel injection!

Even the standard V12 was fun to drive, loved it when an old boss threw the keys of his to me, "Go fill her up". Of course took the long way back, Wimbledon Common, Tibbets Corner, Kingston By-pass, Tolworth Roundabout, back to Raynes Park and the company in Merton. "Where've you been?". "Traffic".

Am I ever glad I decided to watch this one. That car is truly epic! I love that they kept the V12. This side of the Atlantic almost everyone goes for the Chevy LS V8. Ho-hum, boring. There is one shop owner in Kansas who is found something truly strange. I mention it because Car Wizard is doing something that is the opposite of the usual pop a Chevy into everything. He is on the middle of fitting a Jaguar V12 into a 66 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu 4 door hardtop! He found intake manifolds made for the V12 that allow him to use 4 Holley 4 bbl down draught carburetors. As I said, totally bonkers but somehow as epic as this E Type. Gotta love eccentricity!

When I left school in 1977, I played cricket for a local team and one of the guys had a coupe in British Racing Green, which he would give me a lift in. I don't think it was a V12 and it may have been an auto, but it had lovely white leather seats, gorgeous walnut dash, door caps and even on the sill, and was the way to go to and from a game. I can remember watching the bonnet bobbing up and down as we went along and it made me think of a boat until he put some power down. A beautiful car, and a fond memory.

Glorious exhaust note! Looks/sounds as if they made the right kind of mods to this beauty; EFI and a 5-speed box...Years ago, Road & Track magazine did a five car comparison, featuring 1974 models of a V-12 E-type convertible, a Merc 450SL, a Chevy Corvette, a Porsche Carrera, and a Ferrari 246 "Dino"--In those "fuel-crisis" days, the power ratings were less-than-spectacular (though 195 for the Dino was pretty good for 2.4 liters at the time); I think the Jag (carbureted, of course; 1974 being the year before the XJ-S) was around 230 BHP? Anyway, looked like loads of fun; glad you were able to help our Mr. HubNut at the NEC!

The way you were interacting with enthusiasm was all we needed to see to know you were enjoying it, no wonder the owner dailys it. My Son has owned a 2006 CLK 220 CDI Sport AMG for 6 years now. It's not a V8 but it has over 180,000 miles on its crusty arched Silver Grey body but it just starts and drives with the minimum of fuss for a 17 year old daily driver. The shape is beautiful, the drive is sensational, the 170 bhp turbo diesel is so strong and the 5 speed auto is so smooth. It's got the optional red leather sumptuous seats with the AMG brakes and wheels, wider at the rear, and I would happily take it to the South of France tomorrow. Apparently the V8 swap is pretty easy on these because Junior has checked it out long ago. The 220 CDI is actually quite a Sleeper. The Speed Limiter function was very handy in the money grabbing Gatso 2000s as well but no politics today thank you Officer. Go on Matt buy this CLK, you will love it. What a boot for carrying Channel Goodies to Shows. Ha ha I am a Numpty. I placed this comment onto the Resto Mod E Type because I went straight onto it with the pop up at the end of the 5 litre V8 CLK video. Doh!!

I agree with the owner. I’m leaving my mk1 MX5 with its manky paint. As long as it’s solid and drives well (which it is and does !) that’s good enough for me. With a concourse quality paint job I’d be afraid to take it out, let alone leave it in the station car park while I’m at work 😀. Ok it’s not an E-type Jag, but I love it and its stainless steel twin exhaust, pod filter and 1.8 engine make a nice noise, especially in tunnels or mountain passes with the top down!

Thankyou Matt! Thankyou thankyou thankyou!!! The only way that car could be any better than it is (for my own personal preference) would be as a convertible, so I could listen to its soundtrack while the wind blows through (the remainder of) my hair! My favourite has always been the Series III because of the V12 and because you could still get one with a manual box as standard. I coveted a 1973 V12 convertible in Opalescent Silver Blue that I saw in a car yard in the late 80s. She was glorious, had done 54,000 miles and had the manual shifter practically begging me to jump in and start moving it around. However, with a window ticket price of $34,995 (the equivalent of about GBP11,500 back then), I could not hope to own it on a Computer Operator's salary....which was about $250 a week. Although I liked the E-type, my favourite has always been the XJ-S. Even though finding one with a manual gearbox and a V12 in situ was rarer than hen's teeth (not an option from factory and only the various after-market styling houses produced them in limited quantities, although some owners have had a Supra 5-speed gearbox mated up since), I prefer the look and - up until recently - the price tag. It suddenly seems that the XJ-S has a huge number of followers in her middle age, but I notice that it is rare to find one in ratty condition. If I could find one, I'd love a TWR XJR-S or a Lister, but again I figure they'd be out of my league price wise. That E-type though - the sound she makes and the condition of the bodywork is magnificent. I have three "driving restorations" myself and yep - while they look the part and make all the right noises, you get up close and their age certainly shows. My Stag has panelwork that was added to it by things glancing off it during the Christchurch earthquakes of 2010 and 2011 and although some have pointed them out in shows, once they know why the dents are left there, they nod approvingly. It's part of the car's history and some beating and a new coat of paint would lose all that. She's a survivor, like the XKE and I thoroughly approve of what they have done to it. If you love the sound of that V12, try to find the 1985 Bathurst 1000 (probably highlights on KZfaq somewhere) and you'll see (and hear) a group of three TWR XJ-S howling around a 6.2km track in Australia...........sounding remarkably similar to the beast you were just driving! I taped the whole race on VHS back when it used to be broadcast free and without ads (the race was on a Sunday) and I must put it onto DVD so it stops deteriorating. About 7 hours of V12 heaven........and yes, of COURSE they won!

Hot hatches would mostly destroy this performance wise with even FWD cars having similar or greater power. Hyper hatches (AWD cars) destroy a lot of 90s supercars acceleration wise. This would easily win on sound but fuel economy, comfort, practicality, power and torque, ease of drive, handling, braking, safety? No chance!
@davekennedy6315
@davekennedy6315 2 жыл бұрын
Forgot to also say the biggest advantage of a modern hot or hyper hatch.....reliability! Also use in all weather conditions (very important here in the UK with our shite weather!) better rust proofing, galv panels, better sound insulation, room to carry more than 2 people, infact usually enough room for the kids AND shopping. Other than sound and looks? Nah. I think the idea of owning a beautiful E Type is far more appealing than the reality.

NO EV or newer car EVER DELIVER SUCH pleasure, it is about about much fun as you can have with your trousers on, ha ha. Beautiful car, sounds SO GOOD!!!!!!!!!!! I did notice the paint does not seem to match, the RH door is noticeably lighter in colour. Looks and sounds nice, although with your fuel prices in the UK ( $4--4.25nzd ) a litre! Ouch in V12, because you are going to use the performance and get that sound. The original V12 Jag engine are not the most reliable and quite time consuming to work on especially in the XJ saloon. The E type was an instant classic, they are one of the best looking cars ever made!!!! The V12 sound is not unlike a Lamborghini V12!!

Time's been quite kind to it though. I think the Series 3 E Type looks better now than at any time in it's past. Twenty years ago it was dismissed as the ugly duckling of the three. Now though, it just looks stunning. Like fine wine, it gets better and better with age. Absolutely gorgeous, albeit in my own opinion. But I will concede that a Series 1 is even more so.

Always preferred the looks of the Series 1 E Type, especially the early ones with the covers over the headlights. No doubt though that the V12 was an epic engine and the addition of fuel injection and other mods on this car must make it significantly faster than a stock example and more economical too. Great to see a manual gearbox added as the stock 3 speed auto pretty uninspiring in a performance car.
