Check out my reaction to Bojack Horseman: • DOCTOR REACTS TO BOJAC...
It's a Sin reviews: • DOCTOR REACTS TO IT'S ...
This Doctor Reacts video is to the next episode of Hannibal. On the last one, we saw Will diagnosed with autoimmune encephalitis but Hannibal has kept this a secret from him. Will's mental state continues to deteriorate but we also start to see more manipulation tactics from multiple characters and why perhaps Hannibal is targetting Will for this. There is a lot of accuracy and so much interesting mental health and medical concepts to break down.

i love that you noticed how it's not only hannibal that is manipulating Will, but Jack also is in his own way. really nice to see you pick up on that detail

@@AnnekeOosterink he is. though (forgive me if i recall incorrectly, i've not seen the show in a few years) i feel like Jack was more concerned with Will's health at the start, and the longer things went on, the less careful he became about looking out for him. and i think Jack started to take bigger risks as time went on - the kind that he wouldn't have taken at the start of the show i also think Jack's manipulation wasn't maliciously intended (as Hannibal's was), but more selfishly intended. he wants to get his job done/prevent more bad things from happening, and starts to cross more and more lines as time goes on in order to make that happen - including his manipulation of Will i also think that Jack could easily try to justify his own actions by convincing himself it's all for 'the greater good'. at least, that is what i'd imagine he does if he wants to be able to sleep at night lol

I remember how mad I was at Hannibal for doing this to Will. I know people that have struggled to get diagnosed and you see how stressful and frustrating it was to them to not have answers. For Will to be so vulnerable and have a medical explanation denied to him and to be made to think he is going crazy or even becoming homicidal was infuriating.

The audacity of Hannibal to act all calm, cool, & collected during the seizure scene when he's the cause of it. Talk about a drama queen, he's going "Lemme start some shit and then enjoy the show." (I do love that scene though 😂)

I appreciate that you pointed out that mild doesn’t mean insignificant. Sometimes I invalidate my own mental health issues because they’re classified as mild even when they’re still a struggle.

It's a shame you've faced backlash for categorising certain medical issues into subgroups correlated by severity. Your explanation of the justification for this was made in a rational, logical fashion and it makes complete sense.

I really appreciated the beat you took to talk about BPD in * opposition * to what they were talking about. We're often painted as villains in media but as you explained, the emotional component is basically the exact *opposite*, nothing like psychopathy. A narcissist or psychopath is very certain of themselves and dislikes anyone questioning it. Someone with BPD has little to no sense of self at all and thus most negative energy is directed inward, not outward.

I love this show because the first time you watch it it's horrifying and disturbing but the second time it's a romantic comedy. Hannibal you could have just asked WIll out, you didn't have to drive him crazy and frame him for murder. Gosh what a dramatic cannibal queen.

I *adore* the scenes between Gillian Anderson and Mads Mikkelsen. Both are superb actors, and the setting and relationship between the characters give them both the opportunity to showcase how *subtle* they can be while still speaking volumes. Dr du Maurier is walking a very fine line as Hannibal's psychiatrist. She is quite astute and has formed an accurate, educated guess about who and what Hannibal is, but she is impeccably particular about not giving anything away (or at least not showing herself as a threat to Hannibal) to preserve her physical and psychological safety as far as she can. Bedelia is fully aware that Hannibal kills people who he looks down on, who he perceives as 'rude'; she has to be impeccably polite and every time she turns him down she uses up some social capital with him. There's a reason that she has retired from practice but still has one patient - Hannibal. I suspect she knows if she was no longer his psychiatrist he may be compelled to kill her. However, from a professional perspective, Hannibal is a fascinating patient and there's a strong degree of professional intrigue to be in the position to get an up-close examination of how his mind works.

105F is 40.5C, definitely far too high for a happy brain. There are a few easy-to-remember comparison points you can go by, rather than having to remember the conversion formula, which is a mess because the two scales are not directly related. -40 = -40 5F = -15C 32F = 0C 40F = 5C 50F = 10C 61F = 16C 71F = 21C 82F = 28C 95F = 35C 117F = 47C Or, a friend of mine just uses a simple mnemonic to give himself a rough idea: along with “30’s hot, 20’s nice, 10’s cold, 0’s ice”, he’s got “80’s hot, 70’s nice, 50’s cold, 30’s ice”. Less accurate, but good enough for figuring out whether you’ll need a jumper or the sun cream.

As always, I love the insights you bring up in this series. I'm a healthcare provider who struggles with depression and disordered eating, I'm in therapy, and I actually was pursuing a major in psychology once upon a time. Needless to say that there is a lot of interesting overlap between what you talk about here and certain aspects of my life. One point that really stuck out to me in this episode was the idea of reigning yourself in when trying to help a patient. I'm a provider and a patient. I am fighting my own battle with addiction-like behaviors I struggle to control. I've known the frustration, anger, and sympathy of trying to help a patient who can't or won't help themselves, and at the same time, I am that patient. I know the struggle from both sides.

Just as a quick rule of thumb for fevers in Fahrenheit: anything over 100 is not good. A fever of 105 would quite probably land you in an ER for IV fluids (and likely antibiotics, just in case). And, no, I’m not a medical professional; my knowledge of this is more… personal.

Can you do Bojack Horseman "The Showstopper"? The dips between reality and distortion reminded me of that episode. While Will's is associated with a disease he isn't totally aware of, Bojack is dealing with a similar scenario because of absurdly excessive pill and alcohol use.
