This is one of the most beautiful slow movements ever written. I love the delayed cadences near the end. Bach was such a genius.

There's something else to this that I only just realized and that no-one seems to mention. This performance was given near the height of the Cold War, and even so, an American and a Soviet violist did this together. It makes it even more moving than it already is.
@merimore4173 Жыл бұрын
Yes. This, however, is probably not the 1945 occasion in Moscow. It would be grand to see that one. The Moscow performance in 1945 was the last time when this pair (very dear to each other and this perhaps was a red flag to the Soviet government at least) were able to perform this piece together in either in the USSR or in the U.S. Of course they were allowed to perform this concerto in London, U.K. which was Menuhin's second home country, but it is not totally the same than to perform at the same stage in one of the superpowers "clashing with each other" during the Cold War. Thankfully there was also cooperation in the Cold War and the "back door" of cultural diplomacy was always open during the crises. I hope this would be the reality also now during the Ukrainian crisis. Love this!!

Two of the greatest violinists of the 20th Century playing together. What really makes this memorable is how they overcame seemingly insurmountable diplomatic & political restrictions to come together. Their humanity & that of Bach really shines forth in this concert.

The way the two violins talk and answer to each other in such beautiful sound and harmony during their conversation. This is Bach. None other before or after him could have done it this well.

Sometimes I just come back here to watch this specific performance, to unplug from everything and everyone. You can see they're completely 2 different personalities, but still together they match perfectly.

4:15: What extraordinary musical depth. Bach was years ahead of his time.

My favorite by Bach .. The dance of the two instruments speaking with each other, like two dead leaves falling from a tree at the same time, spinning to the forest floor. It speaks to my soul so clearly, and takes me on an intense emotional journey.

Two old lovers softly quarreling with one another, knowing that in the end all will be well and at peace. This is what reaches me through this music, the bits of which Bach's intuition caught in the perfectly harmonic world of the spheres.

When people tell me they dislike Bach because "he's just so mathematical" I wonder... do they lack ears? or do they lack hearts?
@TheEntryCode4 жыл бұрын
Some of Bach is not simply mathematical Baroque variations. The best he did were pieces like this one.

If I were to select my favourite Bach peace, I would certainly kill all my darlings (Hohe Messe, Goldberg Variations, Organ Passacaglia, Violin Chaconne) and go for this concerto, this movement. It may not be Bach's cleverest or most ambitious works, but it is one the very few pieces that actually give me tears. Of course I can, as a musicologist, praise how he creates an entire movement out of little melodic material, but my love for this work is simply irrational. The only piece with a comparable effect on me is the slow movement of Bruckner's 7th symphony. Yes, this is transcendental beauty: it evokes comparisons with pieces from another era, not with its contemporaries (by Bach or otherwise).

I feel Bach often sounds like late 19th century "German" composers whose names end with Er (Mahler, Wagner, Bruckner). With the way he never settles on a scale, and often inside a single theme. Ich will den kreuzstab gerne tragen is a good example Also the start of Vor deinen thron trete ich mich is a bit Wagnerian Also what comes after the second thème of the Saint Anne Prélude. Sometimes he sounds chopinish, And in the art of Fugue and WTC he even sounds like Schoenberg in some fleeting bars

This is, I think, Pierre Capdevielle conducting the National Orchestra of the RTF (Radio France) in 1958 at the Salle Pleyel. An audio CD was released some years ago. The CD also contains the Brahms Concerto for Violin, Cello and Orch. Op. 102 with Oistrakh and Rostropovich 1965 (also on KZfaq) just about as wonderful as the present performance.

Why were they coughing at the end? I would applaude like never before. That was so beautiful :(
@Steinbach19844 жыл бұрын
This is the second of three movements. It's customary not to applaud between movements, but only at the end of entire pieces.
@wellcomeon13 жыл бұрын
Here is a little secret. When the audience is coughing a lot after a slow movement, it means they weren't able to breathe normally while they listened to it, so this is the biggest compliment they can express without applauding because, as it has been told above, it's not right to applaud between a long piece's movements, to save the general impression of the whole form :)
