A friend\student of mine gifted me an old Katana from a flea market years ago....the menuki are wasps and appear to be cuttle fish casts...did certain sword makers use these?...at some point some jerk filed off all sword makers markings...the wrap was in tatters, and the ray skin is very yellowed and brittle, with Extreme wear, to the point of being almost completely flat where the hands go...it is traditionally folded and shaped, its size i would say is ko-katana sized 23" blade(roughly) with a handle around 10"...and possibly same jerk, tried(appears to be)to acid etch or vinegar the blade, for wich ruined the barely detectible Hamon...agitating, and i still feel blessed to have it

That's great! Wasps and cuttlefish isn't something I'm familiar with but it looks like Fuyu Hiro in the 15th century used them. Since menuki are easy to change when rewrapping I'm not sure if they are a strong indicator of who or when it was made. Rough shape or not, it sounds legit and something to be proud to have!

Thanks! Long time hobby and I've learned a lot but I know people who are more knowledgeable than me, they are inspiration to keep learning.

some menuki just not wraped in ito...but directly attached to the samegawa...how they did that...do you have any this type of menuki?..or have any picture showing the back part of menuki?
@SamuraiJames5 ай бұрын
They have a small pin or two attached to the menuki that goes into the handle. This was on early tachi, when the mekugi pin was not a separate piece.

@@SamuraiJames i saw a koshirae tachi on display...no ito but has many menuki on it..i guess it has many holes too in the handle for those...not just for mekugi and hole close to the pummel..

Kindly advise where you bought the tachi on this video. I'm interested in getting one just like it. :)
@SamuraiJames2 жыл бұрын
It's by RyanSword and is semi-custom. It's a 9260 spring steel blade, normally it is only 1095 but they did the 9260 as special request. I'll have a full review in upcoming video after I finish this sword parts mini-series.

hi james-san🙂 I have a question for you.... if you could only choose one Japanese sword and which one would you take? Anyway, thank you so much for your story about Japanese samurai and I hope you continue more ... take care and be strong....💪

Great question. It is very close but it would be the tachi. I really like the nodachi, it has the "huge sword" cool factor, but the tachi is what feels more natural for me. I have a lot of historical European martial arts experience so having the sword hanging from the belt is second nature. The sizing of the tachi is closer to average European long sword size too.

Star Trek & smith? I thought it was Star Wars & Sith? Lol I prefer menuki under my palm to fill that palm gap,but most manufacturers put menuki under the fingers,unless requested
@SamuraiJames2 жыл бұрын
Haha yep it is Star Wars & Sith, my weird sense of humor. Under the fingers is the "traditional" location, one does, and most copy. It's something I didn't notice for a long time.

You're experiencing how tachi felt to most warriors back in the day

@@SamuraiJames one of my swords has a huge tsuba I like that about it. I have Nodachi too but the handle is far too short.

Where did you get the Tachi, it actually looks like a real tachi and not just a katana in tachi fittings
@SamuraiJames Жыл бұрын
It's a slightly customized one from RyanSword. I'll have it in an upcoming video at some point.
