I think the pen chose is perfect and the palette of inks is great also. I'm a big fan of Pelikan apatite as well. I have this pen in my wishlist too.

That's a beautiful pen, and I've heard great things about TWSBI. I feel that the clear barrel was a good choice and you picked some beautiful inks. The only easier filling system is probably cartridges. I can't wait to see what ahe thinks of it!

Fantastic Choice! ❤‍🔥🔥❤‍🔥I LOVE my Iris! I have it inked up with Iroshizuku Yama-Budo (a beautiful bright fuchsia purple!) at the moment and its really matchy-matchy! You also might want to let her know that Carbon Black is a bit finicky to clean. It takes a bit of a scrub to get it completely clean. So you might wanna teach her how to take apart her new TWSBI!

I'm a huge fan of noodlers inks and I absolutely love their blues but they have a amazing green called cactus green and my favorite pink called opera pink I believe or something similar. I haven't used my fountain pens in forever cause I'm all digital now but I do love them.

Good choice on the pen and ink colors. Don’t forget to tell Jess about the Platinum Carbon Black being a pigment ink. She’ll want to clean the pen and not let it dry out so it doesn’t get gunked up. TWSBIs are great for not drying out!

This reminds me of some comments I wanted to make on the fountain pen episode of the podcast! (But since I've started listening to it on my podcast app instead of KZfaq it's a bit more challenging to comment.) Which is that I think the pens you recommended are mostly spot on, but the TWISBI Eco was the first fountain pen I bought for myself (my first FP was my great aunt's Parker) and I don't like writing with it. I feel that when the cap is posted, the pen is too heavy/off balance. And I don't want to write without posting the cap because I WILL lose it. I am keen to try the TWISBI Go to see if I like that better though. Otherwise, I love my Platinum Preppy-- it's the Chinese special edition that you can get from Stationery Pal and I feel like that barrel/cap design is more sleek than the other versions I've seen. And Pilot Kakuno is my most recent pen acquisition and I think it's so fun. Plus both the Preppy and Kakuno are lightweight which imo makes them comfortable for writing for long periods of time (which is something I do too often.) (And I know you said that you thought the Kaweco Sport was over-rated but I won't be deterred, I'm still gonna get one because they're exactly that type of small lightweight fountain pen I love.)

I think those are great choices. Just one note on the TWSBI from personal experience - maybe don't take it apart to clean it until she's more comfortable with it. Putting it back together is not as straightforward as it looks at first.

Love the TWBI Iris as a first gifted pen. I was going to choose the same for my research assistant for her graduation, but went with the Estie boxed set, only because it gives the option of both cartridges and bottled ink, but I am now wondering if I shouldn't have stuck with my original thought to get the Iris..... Jess is going to love it!

I can't believe you said "in case you want to make samples for your friends" instead of "in case you want to make samples for Jess......or me". A lost opportunity. Wasted. The Iris 580 great because it's gorgeous but I am sad that you didn't get an eco since it's just a pull cap and can post. But you did get the most gorgeous pen and hopefully that will spark her interest into falling down the rabbit hole with us. :-)

Twsbi is always a good choice. This is the pen I pictured for her when I was watching your podcast on fountain pens. I think I’ll pick up tick tock croc, that is a really lovely color, I think she will love it. What a thoughtful gift.
