I haven’t dyed anything yet, but I’ve heard that you have to consider how the original color will “mix” with the dye color - many bright or saturated colors won’t easily dye, and the fabrics turn out a somewhat muddy new color. That might only be a satisfying result for certain seasons.

Absolutely. I had colour analysis in March and I’m soft autumn. I have a few white garments and have already dyed 2 pieces sandy beige and also going to colour a white top with natural dye using avacado stones which creates a peachy colour 🙂

True, but the way they categorize colors to seasons is fairly limiting. So I mean if you don't get the analysis done by professionals, and they'll just look into the chart that says stuff like blue eyes, pale skin and dark hair are characteristics of winter. It's also excluding anyone with grey hair, or anyone whose eye and hair color just don't match with the categories (since there need to be specific combos, and not all eye colors are so clearly distinct).

@@elainelouve I feel like you maybe didn't quite catch my meaning, since color theory isn't something that limits anything, and the examples you described easily can be matched in color analysis because it has to do with the properties of how colors work, how we see colors on a technical and scientific level, and not some arbitrarily created categories that exclude some color combinations. For example, when they are checking someone's skin/face, and hair against the different colors it's possible to see the undertones a person naturally has. Undertones (the tone in skin and hair that sits under the surface) aren't visible or discernible on their own, but basically mean is the skin and hair cool or warm in color. We can tell if the skin is cool or warm through contrast with colors that we see as either cool or warm. Almost every color, be it grey, white, yellow, purple, red, etc has an undertone to it like our our skin and hair. People's skin and hair will share the same undertones be it warm or cool. So for example there are warm greys and cool greys. There are warm pinks, and cool pinks. etc. All colors fall into one category or the other. That is objectively true, and what the seasons are based off of. Again, the seasons aren't an arbitrary categorization of people's looks, but how we as humans perceive color on a technical/scientific level. It's a way of visually organizing colors so that science is clearer. What is subjective is what combinations we think look good together or enjoy. Color theory is a pretty complex topic, and impossible to really delve into in a KZfaq comment of any reasonable length but I hope that makes more sense than it did in the first comment I posted/helps better explain what I was originally trying to say. :)

if you are autumn, you might get compliments with grey simply because it is a muted colour, and autumn falls in the low intensity half of the season wheel. But it's not flattering to warm undertones and autumns do better with the correct colours in their palette like oyster, camels, rust etc. It's always a matter of comparison, i.e. something might just be ok, but which is better?

Maybe you get compliments because contrast do you good, if you are Dramatic or Classic Dramatic of Flamboyant Gamine etc. among Kibbe types. Like I'm FG, and as a Light Summer I shouldn't be wearing black and white stripes, but I just look really well in those thanks to Kibbe type. Of course my complexion doesn't look ideal, but overall impression is possitive.

I feel like it's that sometimes if you go somewhat against your type it will give a beautiful contrast. And my personal believw is that most people still look good in black, even if it's not the best colourchoice it will work almost universally

dark autumn are close to deep winter so we can mix and match our colours without being too clashing, red hair looks fine on me and i got the best compliment on wearing teal hair but my natural ashy brown suits me the best

​@@hbarlaam Dark Autumns can wear cornflower blue & also petrol teal. There is no blanket ban on any colour for any season (except black) - just particular shades in a colour.

@@JBUHJBUH I know dark autumns get blues. I'm simply saying that to me, on my screen, this particular blue does not look like it harmonizes with the dark autumn palette.

THANK YOU this is phrased way better than what I've been trying to lol but YES they keep using words like "you look bad/better/washed out/tired/more beautiful" when talking about color combos and I don't think that makes sense. People's aesthetics are different, and even the general society's concept of beauty will evolve so for me these terms don't make any sense! These analysis are not effective tools because people don't know how to use them, only that one set of colors was deemed "right" for them. But when the style changes, when they realise they like to see themselves in another light, or that they want to incorporate a specific colour into their outfits, or change the pallet in any way, they'll be just as lost. It's an unnecessarily restrictive and at the same time generalistic model

Thank you for leaving this comment - it explains a concern I've had but been unable to word properly about this whole process. I like the idea of using colour as a tool rather than having a set prescribed way of looking that is 'right'.

YES! This is the reason why I wouldnt lose my money on this type of analysis. I dont think they even consider any kind of non traditional style. For example, I dress kinda goth cause I like it! I wear almost entirely just black and I get a lot of compliments on it because Its MY style and Im so happy when I wear it. This kind of analysis doesnt contemplate any kind of personality and even tho is presented as a guide and not as rules, I've seen way too many people being unsure of their own likes and letting go their own self expressions in favor of their season colors.

I think that might be a matter of gauging your seasonal analysis AND tonal direction THEN your essence - some people who are high contrast look great when they play up that contrast (e.g. skin as pale as possible & hair as dark as possible) but low contrast folk who like the ethereal essence may wish to play up a lighter look overall (e.g. pale skin & hair).

TOTALLY! as an overgrown emo kid i enjoy wearing black and looking pale and stark, but i don't think a colour analysis would agree lol

That's what I'm worried about haha, my fav palettes are the autumn and spring palettes and it seems like I might be spring so I can live with that but I loveeee autumnal colours and I'm worried they'll tell me they look terrible on me 😂

​@@HaloofFrizz you can always put the colours you are craving a bit further away from your face. that could even mean keeping wearing what you already have but putting a small scarf/bandana or a larger necklace or so in between - getting the benefit of the colour that wakes you up, but still wearing the things you love. plus... these 'updates' cost less, scarves and necklaces are super easy to thrift.

​​@@LemonSte I heard, that if you get your undertone right you will never look worse than good. :) So it doesn't make a drastic change in your appearance, if you switch back and forth between spring and autumn. But one of both will probably harmonize more with your individual features and will therefore make you (probably) look even better than good. Especially(!), if you wear said color near your face.

I'll always defend that your personal preferences take precedent over whatever colour diagnosis someone else may have for you. If you like them and are confident in them then they'll look wonderful, and compensate for whatever benefits exactly matching what colours the consultant sent you might have. Like Marysia said, it's a tool, and only one of many to use when choosing your style; it's not definitive, it's just a shortcut that's become popular nowadays. Trust your own mind and your own judgement, and take the seasons as a suggestion for those times when you don't want to think too hard about what to choose. Also, I promise the difference they make is miniscule to whoever's watching from the outside, nobody's gonna recognise that you're wearing the "wrong" season lol

don't get the recommendation for this blue either. Also, why should anyone type her as summer instead of dark autumn? that almost the complete opposite. As you said winter would be the next best thing and still not quite right.

She mentioned that they analysed her being one step away from winter. If you don't fit into one category completely, you can easily incorporate colors from other palettes that are close. In my case I'm a deep/dark autumn, but also with one foot into deep/dark winter and ever so slightly into true autumn. And for me, yellows only work when they are on the reddish side or when they are mixed into a colder color, resulting in slightly muted colors. Like golden yellow is an ok, but lemon yellow is a nonono. A dark wine red is an absolute yes, a carmine is great combined with black, a vermillion is terrible. A cornflower blue is a no go, a turquoise blue only when it's darker, a turquoise green on the other side is always a fit. A midnight blue is great, but a prussian blue (same color just lighter and clearer shade) does me no good. And so on.

I understand that mid blue is a 'universal colour' and I think she looks amazing in it. Makes her skin look really clear.

If you like the colors just wear them, no need to confirm with a specialist lol. Having confidence in your clothes compensates for any tiny difference the hue or depth or whatever would make, trust me. Especially since they can, as the sisters put it, misdiagnose you; and then you'd be insecure about them for no reason

That's a good point. I think as long as a person is aware of the "effect" a colour or a piece of clothing creates there's no problem. I personally don't like wearing black because I know it makes me look like a vampire, but what if someone knows that and they just don't care? (I myself still wear it many times as well)

nothing is "forbidden", it's just a fact that it's a case of what looks better than something else. Why would you not choose the colours that make you look better. It's one of the easiest ways to improve your appearance and it's stops you being a slave to trends and wastage.

I had mine done in 16 season system and I realized I used those colors 10 years ago and then started buying the wrong colors. Now I wear the right ones again and the difference is huge! I get dressed so much faster now because I don't spend all morning changing my outfit.

I just got it done this week and I realised that because I changed my haircolour to red, I started buying warm colours to suit my hair. Apparently I'm a soft summer (summer/winter mix) and I'll change my hair 😂

One thing to consider. When you shop the light in the shops and boutiques is normally awful. Flurescent lighting etc. Being sure what colors suit you - you can go to a place with natural light in the shop and see if you still want to pick up the garment.

I think a good number of people probably have an inkling of what their best colors are - there are colors that I hate and never wear, because I know they don't look great on me, so there's no way they'd be on my palette. As for temperature, I think makeup is a really good indicator, especially with foundation or lipstick.

Sure the skin is tanned, and eyes and hair are dark, but there can still be differences in the underlying pigmentation (giving a rosy or yellow undertone, that can be subtle) and these people of Asian descent will either look good in colors with a blueish hue or with a yellowish hue. You can train your eye when they service their clients, slowly apply the fabric swatches and explain things (they also have a white studio and natural light, so much better than the studio here. Sure a person at home doesnot have the fabric swatches but I think one can learn enough only by watching several of their videos. I just watched a video of a young lady with rather dark skin and dark hair and eyes, they might have an analysis of an Asian person as well. They are in Melbourne. But even if they have not yet a vidoa of an Asian or a person with grey hair .... the principles are the same no matter the pigmentation of skin, eyes, ....

Hi. For patterns, it depends on your contrast levels. For high contrast ppl (like Lucy) - they can wear brighter patterns & high contrast colors. High contrast is if there's huge difference between your hair, skin & eyes. Lucy has fair skin & dark hair = high contrast. She can wear colors which are opposite each other on the color wheel. Gigi Hadid (w/ natural blonde hair) = low contrast. For multi color clothes, the tip is to choose colors which don't clash with each other. AlyArt has a good vid re: people's contrast levels and there are vids on how to create outfits based on contrast levels by other vloggers.

Color analysis is just color theory that you can use as a tool, ppl can of coure wear whatever they want 😊
