it's because gasoline always was and stil is rediclious cheap in the usa, and these old diesel engines were very slow and very loud, so you don't want to drive one for hundreds of miles, because you would go insane of the noise when you would drive faster than 65mph. The only plus side is that diesel engines last waaaaay longer than petrol engines, and that stil counts for modern diesels.

3DPeter That can be a problem. I've never owned a Mercedes-Benz diesel. But I've ridden as a passenger in my share. What's always annoyed the hell out of me is the sound of the turbocharger. That loud whining they make.

3DPeter That's what I've always liked about diesel engines, their longevity compared to gasoline engines. If only the cost of filling weren't so expensive.

+Jason Carpp in Germany Diesel is much cheaper. We pay 1,28 for Petrol 5% Ethanol and 1,09 for Diesel. If a petrol consumes 8liter / 100km a Diesel will mostly 6 or 5,5 liter.

+MrTiti Here in the USA, it's $2.50 per gallon. While not inexpensive, it'll probably never drop to below $1.00 per gallon, it's less expensive than it was not too long ago. I'd buy a diesel powered Chevy/GMC Suburban Diesel if I could find one in decent condition.
