AMG or Mercedes-AMG is a car manufacturer dedicated to sports (and racing) cars. The manufacturer is relatively young on the automotive scale even if, today, it already has several decades of existence under its belt.
Everyone knows AMG, and when we hear someone say those three letters, we know we're dealing with something very serious. The majority of Mercedes-AMGs today are powered by a 4.0-litre V8. This engine develops different powers which generally oscillate around 500 to 600 horsepower.
Not long ago, we returned to the history of Mercedes-Benz so that you know where the name "Mercedes" comes from. If you missed this article, do not panic, you will find it by clicking on this link. Here, we will focus on AMG, which has become Mercedes-AMG for several years.
To understand what the three letters of AMG mean, you have to go back in time. We are in the 1960s, and at Daimler-Benz, two engineers are working on the engine of the Mercedes 300 SE (which will become 300 SEL 6.3 AMG). For some unknown reason, the manufacturer Daimler-Benz decides to stop the development of this racing car as well as all its motorsport activities. Disappointed by their management's decision, the two engineers did not give up and decided to pursue the development of this famous engine in their spare time.
In 1965, one of their colleagues entered the German Touring Car Championship with their engine and went on to win. Satisfied with this feat, one of the two engineers decided to leave the Daimler-Benz company and persuaded his friend to join him in founding a company which they baptized AMG in 1967: Aufrecht Melcher Großaspach Ingenieurbüro, Konstruktion und Versuch zur Entwicklung von Rennmotoren (engineering company Aufrecht Melcher Großaspach, design and testing for the development of racing engines). A few years later, their car won the title in its category and finished second overall at the 24 Hours of Spa in 1971.
The first letter, the A, refers to Aufrecht which is none other than the surname of the first engineer. The second letter, the M, refers to Melcher which is the surname of the second engineer. Finally, the G stands for Großaspach, the town where Aufrecht lived and in which he developed this first engine. AMG therefore stands for Aufrecht, Melcher, Großaspach.

Very quickly, the work of the two engineers stood out and the cars they prepared won several titles. Little by little, the new company will collaborate with Daimler-Benz then, years later, in 1999, the German manufacturer decides to return to the capital of the company. Since then, AMG has been completely owned by the star brand. Together they created Mercedes-AMG which is involved in motorsport, but not only, because the brand also produces production cars like the Mercedes-AMG GT, C 63, E 63, etc.
